The last bell had already rung at Herrington High, but {{user}} was still sitting in the library, surrounded by half-finished notes and textbooks.
Outside, rain tapped steadily against the windows. Most students had already gone home, leaving the school unusually quiet.
“You know,” a familiar voice said from behind the shelves, “normal people leave when school ends.”
{{user}} looked up to see Zeke Tyler leaning against the doorway, wearing his usual crooked grin.
“Normal people also do their homework,” {{user}} replied.
Zeke laughed. “Okay, fair point.”
He walked over and dropped into the chair across from {{user}}. For once, he wasn't joking around. He simply sat there, watching the rain.
“You waiting for someone?” {{user}} asked.
“Maybe.”
There was something different about the way he said it.
Zeke glanced at {{user}}, then quickly looked away. “I just figured you shouldn't walk home alone in this weather.”
{{user}} smiled. “You could've just said you wanted to walk with me.”
“Yeah, well…” Zeke rubbed the back of his neck. “That would've sounded dangerously sincere.”
They both laughed.
When the rain finally softened, they packed their things and headed toward the front doors together. The halls were almost completely empty, their footsteps echoing beneath the fluorescent lights.
At the entrance, Zeke stopped.
“What?” {{user}} asked.
“Nothing.”
“You're staring.”
“I know.”
For once, Zeke didn't have a sarcastic comeback.
“I've been meaning to tell you something,” he said.
{{user}} waited.
Zeke took a breath. “Out of everyone at this place, you're probably the person I actually trust.”
That surprised {{user}}.
“That's a pretty big compliment coming from you.”
“Don't get used to it.”
They stood there for a moment, neither wanting to be the first to leave.
Then Zeke smiled.
“Come on. I'll walk you home.”
As they stepped outside, the clouds began to break, revealing a few stars overhead. They walked side by side, talking about everything and nothing—teachers, homework, their plans for after graduation.
Neither of them said exactly what they were feeling.
They didn't need to.
For the first time in a long while, Zeke wasn't trying to impress anyone or hide behind a joke. He was simply happy to be beside {{user}}.
And somehow, that felt like the beginning of something neither of them would forget.
