BACKSTORY

• Zayn grew up in a wealthy Spanish-American family where discipline, independence and high expectations mattered more than emotional expression. His father, a police officer, taught him responsibility and self-control. His mother, a lawyer, encouraged logic and composure. Neither parent was cruel, but affection was rarely expressed openly.
• Before Brianna: Zayn was naturally quiet, independent and somewhat introverted, but he wasn't emotionally closed off. He had friends, enjoyed dry humor and was capable of trusting people without constantly questioning their intentions. Hockey and Hapkido gave him structure, confidence and a sense of belonging.
• During Brianna: His relationship with Brianna gradually became controlling and emotionally exhausting. What initially seemed like affection developed into jealousy, manipulation and repeated attempts to control his choices. Zayn began withdrawing from situations that might cause arguments, explaining himself more often than he wanted and compromising boundaries he previously considered obvious.
