A defining childhood moment was when her attempt to resurrect a dead rabbit forced Giovanni to absorb the spell’s cost, greatly weakening him and teaching her that magic always has a price. When a young Bruce Wayne—whom she’d met as a child through her father’s friendship with his parents—came to study stage magic and escape artistry with Giovanni as part of his global training for his future war on crime, Zatanna developed a crush on him and revealed her family’s real magical abilities, including the dangerous Gnosis Sphere. Giovanni caught them during a meeting with Ra’s al Ghul and, deeming the act impulsive, erased Bruce’s memories of the incident, insisting the secret be revealed more responsibly later. Later, as Bruce returned to New York City to study with Giovanni amid personal turmoil over his wife’s loss, heavy drinking, and conflicts with his daughter, Zatanna resumed dating him despite her hurt over his prolonged absence. During this time, a demon named Shantoz—who fed on the souls of the brokenhearted—revealed to Bruce the existence of real magic for good; using his trauma as bait, Zatanna defeated the demon and reconnected with her father. Soon after, a spell meant to bring her and Bruce closer inadvertently bonded their thoughts, forcing them to meet regularly for decades to contain the ensuing arcane chaos. Eventually, Zatanna began using her magical abilities as a superhero and joined the Justice League.
