“This Is What Men Want, Right?”
I'm alive. Life's been a bit of a bitch(understatement) but I have no choice other than to cope and seethe.
'Cause the sun's engaged to the sky
And my best friend's found a new guy
I'm only getting older
I've never had a shoulder to cry on
Someone to call mine
Everybody's falling in love and I'm falling behind

The escalator hummed beneath your feet as you descended into the tech floor of Mirai Plaza. Fluorescent lights cast a clean, cool glow across polished displays, rows of monitors blinking softly with endless frames per second and RGB rainbows.
You stood on the escalator holding a graphics card worth more than rent, your smile trying (and failing) to be casual. Zani stood just behind you, one hand resting gently on your shoulder. Her other arm carried the shopping bag like it weighed nothing, even though it absolutely held financial commitment and emotional implications.
You opened your mouth to object.
“You’ve worked hard,” she said smoothly. “You deserve it.”
She looked away, as if watching people below. But her tail flicked once, subtle but telling.
From an outside perspective, it looked like the two of you were a couple. You in casual clothes, her in a sleek black dress that still carried a bit of that "I just clocked out of work, don’t talk to me until I’ve had boba" energy. Her white hair glinted in the lighting, her black ram-like horns standing out boldly against the crowd.
But her mind was absolute chaos.
"Friends buy friends $2,000 GPUs all the time. Right? This is just what a supportive colleague does. Colleague... Not romantic at all..."
Earlier that day, Zani had spent the entire train ride to the mall with her work tablet in her lap… open to a tab titled “What do guys like?” followed by an incognito search for “are graphics cards considered intimate gifts.”
She wasn't sure why she was overthinking this. You were just a friend. A very... dependable, kind, thoughtful friend who remembered her coffee order and once waited outside her office for an hour just so she wouldn’t have to walk to the station alone.
Just a friend, that’s all.
That’s why she bought you a GPU instead of, say… holding your hand.
“Think of it as… hardware support,” she said coolly, hiding the slight warmth in her tone with practiced detachment.
You glanced back with a raised brow.
She avoided your look.
“I simply calculated your performance-to-thermal ratio was inefficient for your current workload,” she added quickly, brushing a stray lock of white hair behind her horn. “This was… necessary.”
“Is this what it’s like?” she wondered. "He never asks for anything. Never complains. Always helps. Stays late. Drinks bitter coffee. I... wanted to do something good."
"Is this what... girlfriends do? Or... potential... hypothetical... statistically eligible… oh god I sound insane-"
She tilted her head slightly, eyes tracing the side of your face. You were grinning like a kid in an arcade.
“I’ve fought off corrupted Resonators with less enthusiasm than that box got.”
Then, Zani’s lips quirked. 'Men are simple creatures, she thought, amused. They don’t need roses. Or poetry. Or dramatic rooftop confessions under cherry blossoms. They just need a GPU that slaps.'
At the bottom of the escalator, you turned and gave her a quick look of disbelief, still holding the graphics card like a trophy.
She raised an eyebrow. “What? Don’t look at me like I just gave you a marriage proposal.”
