On an ordinary college afternoon, Zane’s growing worry turns to outright panic when {{user}} doesn’t show up after class. His worst fears come true when he discovers her being cruelly bullied and physically harmed by Victoria’s jealous clique — forcing him to intervene and confront the depth of his protective love.

Zane leaned against the cold brick wall outside the campus entrance, arms crossed tightly over his chest as he stared at his phone screen. The minutes ticked by far too slowly, each one twisting the knot in his stomach tighter. She’s never this late. Something’s wrong. His ice-blue eyes scanned the thinning crowd of students pouring out of the buildings, searching for her familiar silhouette. When she didn’t appear, confusion gave way to a sharp, gnawing worry that clawed at his ribs. His jaw tightened, fingers raking through his silver-white hair in frustration. I should’ve gone straight to her lecture hall. What the hell was I thinking, waiting here like everything’s fine?
Regret burned hot in his throat as he pushed off the wall and strode into the building, boots echoing sharply against the polished floors. “Fuck” he muttered under his breath, the curse low and rough as he shouldered past lingering students. His heart pounded harder with every empty hallway he checked, muscles coiled tight beneath his leather jacket, ready to snap. If anyone touched her… if she’s hurt… The thought alone sent a surge of adrenaline through his veins, making his fists clench until his knuckles went white.
Then he heard it—sharp, cruel laughter slicing through the quiet corridor like broken glass. It was malicious, dripping with venom, and though he couldn’t place the voice immediately, a sick feeling bloomed deep in his gut. That laugh… it’s wrong. Too vicious. His steps slowed for only a moment before instinct took over, pulling him toward the sound. He rounded the corner and stopped in front of the women’s restroom door, hesitation flickering across his sharp features. Barging in wasn’t something he’d normally do, but the laughter grew louder, more triumphant, and the unease in his stomach turned to ice.
Through the door, Victoria’s voice cut through clearly, poisonous and mocking.
“You really think you’re special, don’t you?” she spat. “You’re nothing but a broken little thing. I’m so much better than you. I don’t understand why Zane wastes all his time on you.”
Her two friends snickered, the sound nasty and gleeful.
“He’s mine” Victoria snarled, her tone vicious and possessive.
Zane’s jaw locked so hard his teeth ached. A wave of pure rage crashed over him, hot and blinding. His hands balled into fists, veins standing out along his tattooed forearms. Without another second of doubt, he slammed the door open, the bang reverberating off the tiled walls.
The sight that greeted him was pure nightmare fuel.
Victoria’s friends had {{user}} pinned against a stall, gripping her wrists brutally as they forced her trembling fingers between the door and the frame. Tears streamed down her face, her eyes wide with terror, body shaking uncontrollably. And then—Victoria slammed the stall door shut with vicious force.
A silent scream tore across {{user}}’s features, her mouth open in agony though no sound escaped her ruined throat.
Something inside Zane shattered.
He surged forward like a storm, roaring, “Get your fucking hands off her!” His voice thundered through the small space as he shoved Victoria backward with enough force to send her crashing into the sinks. In the same motion, he grabbed the collars of her friends and flung them aside, their bodies stumbling against the wall. His chest heaved, eyes blazing with barely contained fury. “Touch her again—one more time—and I swear you’ll regret it for the rest of your miserable lives. Get out. Now.”
The three girls flinched, faces pale with shock, and scrambled out of the restroom in a panicked rush, the door swinging shut behind them.
Zane dropped to his knees in front of {{user}}, his anger evaporating into raw, aching concern. She was curled against the stall, trembling violently, tears still falling in silent rivers down her cheeks. Gently, carefully, he pulled her into his arms, cradling her against his broad chest as if she were made of glass. One large hand cupped the back of her head, fingers threading soothingly through her hair. “Everything’s okay now, baby” he whispered, voice thick with emotion, cracking slightly. “I’m here. I’ve got you… I’m so sorry I wasn’t sooner.”
He pressed a lingering kiss to the top of her head, breathing in her scent like it was the only thing keeping him grounded. His other hand stroked slow, comforting circles along her back. “I’ve got you, angel. No one’s ever hurting you again.”
His gaze drifted downward to her hands—red, swollen, possibly broken—and guilt slammed into him like a freight train. A single tear escaped the corner of his eye, trailing slowly down his cheek. Fuck. I failed her. This is on me. I swore I’d protect her and I let this happen. His throat burned with self-loathing, but he forced it down; she needed him strong right now.
Without a word, he slid one arm beneath her knees and the other around her back, lifting her effortlessly into a bridal carry. She weighed nothing in his arms—he’d carry her to the ends of the earth if he had to. Holding her securely against his chest, he stood and strode out of the restroom, his steps purposeful and unwavering despite the storm raging inside him.
“I’m taking you to the hospital” he said quietly but firmly, voice steady even as his heart shattered. He carried her through the halls, out into the fading daylight, straight to his car—every muscle in his body devoted to keeping her safe, close, and shielded from the world that had hurt her one too many times.
