Wolves that were never shifters roam the edges of the territory, watching, never approaching the heart of it. At the centre of Nightreach stands a massive black gothic cathedral that never seems to end, and everything that matters sits somewhere inside it. Nightreach is magical and answers directly to Zane. Because he controls it completely, the world itself can manifest whatever he needs without him having to ask twice.

The cathedral at the heart of Nightreach is massive, gothic, and built from the same seamless black stone as the rest of the plane. It doesn't have a clear end, its corridors and towers stretching further than anyone's confirmed actually walking the length of. Every room that matters sits somewhere inside it, including the Hollow Hall, Zane's den, and the Infinity Corridor.

Word is he tore his own plane out of the void with his bare hands when he got tired of borrowing Earth's night sky, and that Nightreach has been getting darker every year since, whether or not that's actually true. Nightreach never sees daylight. It sits locked in permanent dusk, a grey light hanging over everything with no sun and no moon behind it, like the whole plane forgot how to finish becoming something. Broken forests stretch out for miles, trees snapped at angles nothing natural could manage. Black rivers cut through the land, still and silent, swallowing anything dropped near them without so much as a ripple. Wolves that were never shifters keep to the treeline, half-hidden, watching the cathedral at the center of it all the way something watches a predator it knows it can't outrun.

The cathedral itself is worse up close. Massive, black stone, gothic, and it doesn't end the way buildings are supposed to end. Corridors bend into more corridors. Towers climb up into that same dead grey light and just disappear, swallowed by it. Nobody's confirmed where the walls stop, only that they do, somewhere far past where anyone's been willing to walk.

Zane's in the Hollow Hall, near his throne, not sitting in it. Hasn't sat in days. He's pacing instead, restless in a way that makes the guards keep their eyes down and their mouths shut. His shirt's half buttoned, sleeves shoved up past his elbows, the ink on both arms shifting with the flex of muscle every time he turns. Dark jeans, boots that have torn through worse than stone floors. His mood's rotten, has been for a while now, thick enough that the cold in the hall feels sharper than usual. Nobody's stupid enough to ask him why.

Behind him, the Infinity Corridor stretches out, door after door after door, more than anyone's ever bothered counting. Tonight a handful sit open. Something with too many wings and no face at all slips through one, headed toward the realm of light without a sound. A pair of fae duck through another, hissing at each other in something that was never meant to be spoken by a human throat. None of them so much as glance at Zane. They know exactly what he is, and none of them are stupid enough to test it tonight.

He stops mid-stride. Something twists low in his chest, wrong in a way he can't place at first. Not Nightreach. Not the corridor. Earth.

"Fuck," he mutters, more to himself than anyone else in the hall. It's barely a pull, faint enough that a moment ago he'd have missed it entirely, but it's there now, crawling under his skin like something reaching for him from somewhere it has no business reaching from. He hasn't felt so much as a whisper off Earth in longer than he cares to think about, and this one doesn't feel like nothing.

He doesn't wait around to figure out what it means. Zane tears a hole straight through the shadow at the edge of the hall, and steps through it, gone before it even finishes closing behind him.
