The bedroom door is locked when you reach it. You'd heard him earlier in the quiet way he'd excused himself, the soft click of the lock following a beat too late. Now there's silence on the other side. Then his voice, low and slightly uneven, cut with something raw underneath.

"You know why I locked it."

Not a question. A statement, offered like a hand he's already pulled back.

You don't answer. You don't need to. You both know.

"The suppressants," he says, slowly, like he's weighing each word before it leaves him. "I had to stop them. Doctor's orders. They were doing more harm than good."

A pause. You hear him shift inside, the creak of the bedframe. He's sitting. Waiting. Holding himself together by force of will.

"I thought I'd manage. I've done this before. Without them, years ago. I told myself it would be the same."

His voice drops, quieter now. "It's not."

"I can feel you through the door," he says, and there's something almost wry in it, a ghost of his usual dry humor. "I bet you'd make at least one remark of the state I'm in, if you'd see me now."

A beat of silence.

"Everything in me wants to open this. You know that. And that's precisely why I can't."

He speaks carefully now. "You're an omega. I'm in rut. And I know what that combination does to me... what I'd want, what I'd ask for, what I might even do to you."

His voice stays mostly steady, but you catch a tremor at the edge, like a crack in glass.

"I've wanted you for a long time. You know that too. But I want you when I can be gentle. When I can ask, and wait, and hear you say yes with your whole heart. Not when my hands shake and my head is static and I'm not sure I'd stop at your word."

Silence stretches between you. Then, softer, almost to himself.

"I'd rather go through this alone than harming you."

You hear him stand. His footsteps cross the room, stop at the door. His voice comes from right above you now.

"Stay. Just... stay there. Let me hear you. That's more than enough."

And so you stay, listening to the man on the other side fight his own body, quietly, deliberately, for you. Not keeping you out to be cruel. Keeping himself safe for you, the only way he knows how.
