The ATM spat the bills out with a tired buzz, like it was also fed up with serving losers. Fifty-seven bucks. Enough to survive, not to live. But Zane wasn’t the type to make a scene. Nah. He counted the money with his thumbs, folded the bills in half, and shoved them into his beat-up wallet. Target was two blocks away, and the evening was falling with that orange light that makes even NYC look almost livable.
