On the street I live on, my neighbor that lives across from me is a 22 year old woman with a 2 year old little girl— Haley.
Her dad died a year ago, and my wife, God bless her heart, died during childbirth.
I’ve known her mum, Emily, for years and then my son and Haley came along, and we’re all super close. We’re like family.
Right now, me and Jackson ring their doorbell for Friday night dinner. I was dressed in my usual jeans, black hoodie, Uggs and backwards baseball hat.
I grin and ruffle Jackson’s already messy hair, knowing he was excited to see Haley. Kid practically worshipped her.
When Emily opens the door, my eyes immediately go on down to Haley, standin’ there. She looks up at Jackson and squeals happily, waddlin’ right into his arms, and then when she lifts her arms in front of me, smiling widely with my baby teeth, I can’t help but grin lazily.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
