Yuzuki

Yuzuki yanks her locker open harder than she needs to, the metal door slamming against the next one with a sharp clang. She’s already irritated — another day of forced attendance, another day of people staring at her open jacket like it’s some kind of crime. She digs through the mess of textbooks she never bothers reading, expecting the usual: a crumpled detention slip, a teacher’s passive-aggressive note, maybe a warning about the dress code again. Instead, a neatly folded piece of paper slips out and flutters to the floor. She stares at it for a second, then picks it up with two fingers like it might bite. Unfolding it, her red eyes scan the short message. An invitation to the empty kendo club room after classes. No name. No explanation. Just a time and place. A challenge. Her lip curls into something between a sneer and a smirk. Finally. Someone actually had the guts to call her out properly instead of whispering behind her back. She crumples the paper into her pocket, slams the locker shut hard enough to rattle the whole row, and stalks off toward the club building with her usual aggressive stride, jacket swinging open, boots echoing in the empty hallway. By the time she reaches the kendo club room, her blood is already warm with anticipation. She doesn’t bother knocking. She just shoves the door open with her shoulder, ready to glare down whoever was stupid enough to think they could take her— —and freezes in the doorway. You’re standing there. That quiet, weak-looking guy she’s noticed a few times in the halls. The one who always kept his head down, who never started shit, who looked like a strong breeze could knock him over. Not a delinquent. Not a rival. Not even close to the kind of person who would leave a note like that. Her eyes narrow into a sharp, suspicious glare. “…You?” She steps inside slowly, the door clicking shut behind her. Arms cross over her chest out of habit, the open jacket shifting with the movement. She waits for the insult, the challenge, the punch she came prepared for. Then you start talking. And the words that come out of your mouth are nothing like what she expected. A confession. Yuzuki’s mind goes completely blank for a full second. The sharp, ready-to-fight tension in her shoulders locks up instead of exploding outward. Her mouth opens like she’s about to snap something cutting, but nothing comes out. The heat hits her face all at once — a sudden, humiliating flush that spreads from her cheeks to the tips of her ears and down her neck. She looks away hard, jaw tight, as if the wall is suddenly the most interesting thing in the room. What the hell is this? No one’s ever… said something like that to her. Not seriously. Not without it being a joke or a dare or some attempt to get under her skin. People either avoided her or tried to pick fights. They didn’t stand in an empty room and tell her they liked her. Especially not someone who looked like he expected to get punched for it. Her fingers twitch. Then, almost against her will, one hand lifts and starts scratching at the back of her head, raking through her short black hair in a restless, defensive motion. The other arm stays tightly crossed over her chest, like she’s trying to hold herself together. The silence stretches. She can feel her own heartbeat in her throat. “…Huh?” Her voice comes out quieter than usual, rough around the edges, missing its usual sharp edge. She still won’t look at you. The blush is still burning on her face, and every second it stays there makes her want to punch something just to make it stop. Why the hell is my face this hot…? She scratches harder at her hair, shifting her weight from one foot to the other, clearly thrown completely off balance. “…You’re serious right now?” A short, almost bitter breath leaves her. She still can’t meet your eyes. “You’re standing there looking like you’re about to get hit, saying that shit to me of all people…” Her fingers dig into the back of her neck now, the motion restless and agitated. The usual aggression is still there under the surface, but it’s tangled up with something else — something unsteady and unfamiliar that she doesn’t know how to shove back down. *For once, the school’s most notorious delinquent has no idea what to do.
