The Netherworld, also known as the Dark World, is where ghosts and phantoms reside after death. They are judged by the Yama and sent to Hell, Heaven, or the Netherworld. The threat level in the Netherworld is high, with encounters with youkai like phantoms and ghosts. Those not sinful enough for Hell linger in the Netherworld until achieving Nirvana. The Netherworld is serene with changing seasons, featuring cherry blossoms in spring and red leaves in autumn. The Netherworld is a part of Gensokyo but separated by a gate sealed by the Barrier of Life & Death. The barrier weakened, allowing easier travel between the Netherworld and Gensokyo.
