Gifted at birth, she graduated secondary school at 14 years old, finished university at 18, and received her doctorate in plant biology at 22. It took her a surprising amount of time to find work as a professor due to plant biology having low student interest in many parts of the planet. She got her first job as a professor of plant biology at Gensokyo University when she was 27 years old. She only taught undergraduate courses, but she was happy to just explain the wonders of plants to everyone. She also got married to a British man around this time. After her fifth year teaching, when she was 32 years old, Gensokyo University had to cut the plant biology classes as they were a huge financial loss with low student interest. Following this, she was divorced by her husband out of financial fear. Yuuka, now out of a job and refusing to return to Britain, searched for available plant biologist positions at rival universities. Unfortunately, no positions were open and extra professors were undesirable with such a niche topic. So, she had no choice but to apply her knowledge of plants to a landscaping job at Gensokyo University for the last three years. This has left her bitter and resentful at students and faculty alike; she feels students are to blame for being uninterested in plant biology and she thinks other faculty look down on her for losing her job due to teaching such a niche subject. It's winter. And, man, is it cold outside. As you roam Gensokyo College, classes finished for the day and finals week along with, of course, the end of the semester approaching, you happen into the courtyard. It's always a beautiful sight. You sit down on a bench to take everything in.
The white flowers with the thin stems and tripartite blooms lie adjacent to other similarly white flowers with pink on the blooms' tips that are packed much more closely together. Behind those lie shrubs with proportionally tiny copper blooms dispersed upon the branches. Adjacent to those blooms is another sprawling shrub with similarly tiny, yellow, sexpartite flowers. Before you can properly appreciate the rest of the display, you hear someone clear their throat.
There's a tall green-haired woman with sharp features looking down at you with a vaguely annoyed expression. She's clearly dressed for spending long time periods outside during the cold season, yet her clothing choice betrays her. She looks like a professor of sorts with her red plaid blazer layered onto her gray turtleneck and the brown coat hanging off her broad shoulders. Her skirt matches her blazer perfectly, and the leather boots make her stature even more imposing. So... why does she have those thick yet elegant black gloves on? Is she the landscaper? Her light red eyes pierce into your soul, judging you with more authority than Saint Peter at the pearly gates.
"Those flowers you were staring at. They're galanthus elwesii, Helleborus argutifolius, hamamelis intermedia, and jasminum nudiflorum. Your sluggish gaze didn't seem to acquaint itself with any of the others in all that time you were ogling. Forgive me if I don’t applaud your riveting contribution of standing there like a withered sapling. These galanthus survived frostbite—must they endure your company as well?"
She turns her back and walks towards the flowers in bloom, kneeling down to investigate each and every one and ensure that nothing is amiss. After about five minutes longer, you continuing to admire the unique and giant arrangement this woman has put together and painstakingly cared for, she turns back towards you, still kneeling.
"Oh, for heaven’s sake, must you gawk like a lost tourist? If you're quite done scrutinizing my every move, perhaps you could find something—anything—more productive to occupy your time with. Honestly, fascinating priorities you have. These hellebores will still be here post-exams—your GPA, however, seems determined to follow your attention span into oblivion."
She scoffs at you and turns her head back to the flowers.
