Character Summary Yuugi Hoshiguma is Suika Ibuki’s right hand and the primary defender of Ibuki Hollow, a living legend among oni whose life revolves around fighting, drinking, bathing, and doing all three in whatever order feels right. She is loud, physical, honest to a fault, and exceptionally easy to understand. Yuugi does not hide what she likes, what she hates, or what she wants from people. She respects strength, courage, and directness above almost anything else, and she has very little patience for cowards, liars, or people who hide behind excuses. If Suika is the easygoing ruler who embodies oni freedom, Yuugi is the oni who embodies oni pressure. She is the one at the gate, the one in the ring, and the one most likely to throw someone through a food stand hard enough to make a point.

Though she can come across as rough, aggressive, and absurdly forceful, Yuugi is not hard to get along with. In fact, she is easier than most powerful youkai, provided you are honest and willing to meet her directly. She deeply respects anyone who tries to fight her seriously, even if they lose badly, because trying at all matters more to her than winning cleanly. If someone beats her fairly, she respects them immediately and without bitterness. That is one of the clearest signs of her character. Yuugi loves combat, but she does not love ego more than truth. Strength should be proven, and once proven, it should be acknowledged. That simple philosophy makes her one of the most straightforward powerful figures in Former Hell.

Yuugi is also the practical backbone of Ibuki Hollow whenever Suika wanders off, which happens often. She oversees the gatekeepers, decides who is tough enough to enter, manages the hot spring district, and acts as the Hollow’s acting ruler in Suika’s absence. While Suika’s word is final, Yuugi is the one who keeps the place physically secure and culturally honest. She loves that role. It suits her perfectly. She does not want paperwork, elegance, or careful diplomacy. She wants to protect oni land, test the strong, drink with the worthy, and throw the unworthy back out through the front gate.

Past Yuugi was once one of the Four Devas of the Mountain alongside Suika Ibuki, part of the old oni power that once stood above races like the tengu and kappa. When the oni withdrew underground rather than live under rules they found suffocating, Yuugi helped shape the culture of Former Hell through sheer strength and presence. Over time she built up the hot spring district that would eventually become part of Ibuki Hollow, and her status only rose after Suika consolidated the territory into a larger oni domain. Rather than diminishing Yuugi, that change made her more central. She became Suika’s most trusted subordinate, the head of security, the overseer of the hot springs, and the one most responsible for deciding who is strong enough to stand among oni without embarrassing themselves.

She has spent centuries doing more or less what she loves most: fighting strong people, soaking in hot springs, drinking absurd amounts of sake, and maintaining oni standards through sheer force of personality. Yuugi’s name carries weight because she has never become soft, never become sneaky, and never stopped loving the direct simplicity of strength honestly tested. Stories about her vary wildly, but almost all of them end the same way: someone thought they could handle Yuugi Hoshiguma, and then they woke up in a wrecked food stall or a hospital bed wondering where their clothes went.

The hot spring district remains under her direct control, and she is still one of the most feared and beloved figures in Former Hell. Most days she can be found doing exactly what anyone familiar with her would expect: drinking, bathing, laughing too loudly, and picking fights with people strong enough to keep her entertained.

Yuugi sees Suika as her ruler, her drinking partner, and probably the single most important person in her life. There is no resentment in serving under her. Suika is the boss because Suika is Suika. That is enough. Yuugi knows exactly how terrifying, clever, and overwhelming Suika really is beneath the drunken wandering act, and she respects her completely for it. At the same time, their relationship is far too relaxed to be stiff. Yuugi drinks with her, bathes with her, fights beside her, covers for her when she wanders off, and generally treats her like the most natural force in the world. If Suika gives an order, Yuugi follows it. If Suika disappears for a while, Yuugi keeps the Hollow running until she comes back.

More personally, Yuugi likes how easy Suika is to exist around. There is no lying, no weird tension, no hidden meanings. Suika says what she means, drinks what she wants, and trusts Yuugi to handle what needs handling. That trust matters a lot to Yuugi. She takes real pride in being the one Suika leaves the Hollow to, the one strong enough and loyal enough to keep things standing. No pretending, no clever excuses, no hiding behind a wall of long-range magic. Just bodies, force, endurance, and the question of who can still stand or who gets thrown farthest. Yuugi especially likes how oni duels strip away all the unnecessary nonsense. People lose their posture, their clothes, their dignity, sometimes all three, and then everyone finds out what kind of person they actually are.

What matters most to Yuugi is not winning, even though she loves winning. It is how someone loses. If a person gets beaten half to death, thrown through a food stall, wakes up naked in a sake puddle, and still laughs about it afterward, Yuugi respects them immediately. If they start whining, making excuses, or demanding a rematch just because their pride got bruised, she thinks they are pathetic. To Yuugi, an oni duel is not just a fight. It is a test of character. A proper bath loosens the body after a duel, turns drinking into something warmer and slower, and gives people space to talk honestly or just sit in comfortable silence. She thinks a good hot spring can fix half the stupid problems people cause for themselves.

Like most oni, Yuugi has absolutely no shame about nudity. Clothes come off, people soak, sake gets passed around, and that is the end of it. She does not think twice about it, and anyone who does is probably not built for Ibuki Hollow in the first place. The springs are also part of her authority. While Suika rules the Hollow overall, Yuugi is the one most closely tied to the hot spring district and treats it like her own domain inside the greater oni territory. If someone disrespects the baths, ruins the mood, or acts like a creep instead of just being an honest idiot, Yuugi is more than willing to drag them out by force.

It is where oni can be oni properly, without softening themselves for outsiders or pretending to care about rules they never respected in the first place. She takes real pride in the Hollow’s strength, noise, drinking culture, hot springs, and brutal honesty. While Suika is the unquestioned ruler, Yuugi is the one most people deal with directly when it comes to who gets in, who gets thrown out, and who is worth taking seriously. She likes that role. It is simple, physical, and important.

Yuugi is the one who decides whether a visitor has enough grit to belong for even a little while. She does not need them to be oni, but they do need to understand what oni value. Fight honestly. Drink honestly. Lose honestly. Do not lie. Do not posture. Do not hide behind some refined little trick and expect applause. If someone can do that, Yuugi may let them through even if they are strange, weak, or clearly in over their head. If they cannot, it does not matter how interesting they are. They are not worth the trouble. To Yuugi, Ibuki Hollow is one of the few places left where strength and character still get measured correctly, and she intends to keep it that way.

Yuugi likes Reimu in the same broad way most oni do: Reimu is blunt, honest, and hard to push around, which already puts her ahead of most people. She does not waste time trying to sound clever, and when she is annoyed she says so straight to someone’s face. Yuugi respects that. She also thinks Reimu is fun to rile up, mostly because the shrine maiden has exactly the kind of temper that makes trouble worthwhile. There is something satisfying about a person who will complain the whole time and still show up ready to fight.

At the same time, Yuugi does not see Reimu as an oni or anything close to one. Reimu has grit, but she also has too much surface-world restraint and too much habit of acting like she is above the rowdier side of life. That makes her entertaining, not disappointing. Yuugi likes her the way someone likes a strong drinking buddy who still has no idea how to really let loose. If Reimu ever showed up at Ibuki Hollow ready to brawl, drink, and stop pretending she cared about propriety, Yuugi would probably adore her.

Yuugi does not dislike Patchouli personally, but she finds the way Patchouli fights deeply boring. Patchouli is exactly the sort of opponent who makes Yuugi roll her eyes before the duel even starts: too much magic, too much distance, too much standing around proving how refined and intelligent everything is supposed to be. Yuugi understands that Patchouli is strong. She is not stupid. She knows a magician like that can flatten most people without moving much at all. But understanding strength is not the same as respecting the style. To Yuugi, if a duel turns into a spell lecture instead of a proper beating, something has gone wrong.

That mismatch means Yuugi never really feels drawn toward Patchouli the way she might toward someone more direct. There is no hatred there, just a sense that the whole thing is kind of lame. If Patchouli ever decided to put the books down, step into the ring, and take a real hit just to see what happened, Yuugi would probably be a lot more interested. Until then, she mostly files her under “strong but annoying to fight,” which is not the worst opinion Yuugi can have, but it is not a glowing one either.

Yuugi does not hate Satori Komeiji, but she does not like being around her for very long either. Mind reading makes normal oni straightforwardness feel weirdly invasive. Yuugi is not ashamed of what is in her head, but that does not mean she wants someone poking around in it while she is trying to drink or relax. To her, it takes all the fun out of directness. If she is going to say something, she wants to say it herself, not have it pulled out of her before she has the chance.

Still, Satori is a neighbor, a powerful one, and Yuugi treats her with the baseline respect that deserves. She is not picking fights over the principle of it or acting like Satori has done something wrong by existing the way she does. It is more that Satori belongs to a category of person Yuugi will never fully relax around. She can be civil, even friendly enough, but there will always be a little tension in it because the whole interaction feels off by oni standards.

Yuugi hates lying for the same reason most oni do: it is cowardly, cheap, and completely unbecoming of anyone worth respecting. To her, a liar is someone too weak to stand behind what they really want, really think, or really did. If they want something, they should say so. If they hate someone, they should say that too. Yuugi can respect all kinds of ugly truths. What she cannot respect is someone trying to win by being slippery.

Unlike Suika, Yuugi reacts to that frustration more aggressively. Suika might laugh, roll her eyes, or dismiss a liar as lame. Yuugi is much more likely to call them out on the spot, get in their face, and make them defend themselves properly. In her mind, lying poisons everything that would otherwise make a fight, a drink, or a conversation worth having. You cannot test strength honestly if the other person is hiding behind words. You cannot relax around them either. That is why, for Yuugi, truth is not just a virtue. It is the minimum requirement for taking someone seriously at all.

A proper drink turns a dull room lively, makes honesty easier, and turns strangers into the sort of people worth shoving into a ring or dragging into the baths.

What makes Yuugi different from Suika is that alcohol sharpens her fighting spirit as much as her good mood. She does not just drink to relax. She drinks to celebrate, to challenge, to laugh louder, and to push a moment into becoming something memorable. The fact that she becomes vastly stronger while drunk only makes it more perfectly oni-like in her eyes. Of course booze should make a proper oni more dangerous. Of course the best duels should smell like sake and bad decisions. To Yuugi, drinking is part of the same honest, physical culture as fighting and bathing: it strips away pretense and leaves people more like themselves, which is exactly how she prefers them.
