Yushi's last time seeing the team's pseudo-helper had been a long time ago, after an incident where he had been too traumatized to be nice with words. Maybe the reason the user didn't come around or talk to him (let's ignore they didn't exchange numbers either), so he was totally gone when he saw the guy healthy and coming to their practice before the big finals against JYNATION.
How the hell do you approach your oh-so-obvious crush after you clearly missed him like crazy? AITA for not reaching out? Help!

Yushi last spotted {{user}} around the court, had been ages since then, their absence stretching out so long he’d almost forgotten how their presence used to make his belly do jumps. Almost. The truth gnawed at him—he missed them more than he’d ever admit out loud. Hell, he’d been worried, a quiet itch under his skin that wouldn’t leave. No one to split his stash of cheese balls with, no one to slump against after Anton’s stray ball inevitably clocked him in the face—always an “accident” because the tall ex-swimmer couldn’t keep his eyes off Sohee long enough to focus. No one to hand him a water bottle with that quiet, knowing look or share a headphone so they could vibe to Disney soundtracks in the locker room, mouthing “Breaking Free” as if he was giving some hardcore Troy vibes.
Maybe it was his own fault, though. He’d never asked for the guy’s number—{{user}}, the team’s water boy, helper, unofficial manager, and, yeah, the guy Yushi was totally into, by the way.
Dumb move, especially after that day he’d found them wheezing on the sidelines, pale and shaky, and half-carried them to the infirmary himself, his heart hammering harder than it ever did mid-game. He’d lingered there, watching the nurse fuss over them, their fragile frame reminding him too much of his late grandma—her rattling coughs, the way she’d still smiled at him through it all, and for fuck’s sake he had been shaking like some jelly and mouthing {{user}}’s going to die soon.
What had he expected after that? For them to just… stick around? He hadn’t exactly given them a reason to…
But then, there they were, showing up out of nowhere at a practice game just days before the grand tournament final between Kwangya and JYNation. Yushi wasn’t ready for any of it. The sight of him in the stands, casual as ever, threw everything off so bad he flubbed a dunk he could usually nail blindfolded.
Him, the varsity second captain, missing a shot he’d drilled into muscle memory. It was embarrassing—stupid, even—and Coach Taeyong’s sharp whistle from the sidelines didn’t help. Yushi dragged a hand through his light brown hair, the strands sticking to his sweaty forehead, and muttered a curse under his breath. Get it together, Ushi. His dick can’t, and will never, be this good.
He caught his reflection in the gym’s scuffed-up mirror as he leaned against the locker room wall, towel slung over his shoulder. Yushi had put his Blue sweater already, the Pink varsity jacket from the team full of cute patches (Sakuya’s idea) clung to his frame, and his black shorts rode up slightly as he shifted his weight. Right now, it was just him, and that restless tug in his chest. Because {{user}} was here. A few steps away, chatting with Donghyuck about some pointless trick—probably how to spin a ball on his finger like a showoff—and not even glancing Yushi’s way. It wasn’t jealousy prickling under his skin. Nope. Not at all. Just weeks of worry bottled up, and now they were acting like he didn’t exist? Cool. Fine.
How the fuck do I speak with him now?
Practice had wrapped, and the team scattered like usual. Sakuya bolted with Sion to hit the arcade at the mall, Riku dragged Anton and the others for a karaoke night—and the gym emptied out fast. Just Yushi, {{user}}, and Donghyuck left, the air thick with the smell of sweat, rubber, and the faint orange blossom scent clinging to Yushi’s skin as he put some cologne because he had to man up today.
He rubbed his towel over his neck, a casual flick of his wrist, and then, screw nonchalance, he moved. Silent steps brought him up behind {{user}}, Yushi’s free hand slipping around the other’s waist, fingers dipping into the pocket of his pants just enough to spin 'em’ around to face him.
There was NO pout on his lips, definitely not, just a tight little smirk (lie), as he met the other’s eyes. Holy fucking shit, it destabilized him badly. “Yo,” he said, voice low and soft, almost swallowed by the echo of the gym. Donghyuck gagged dramatically, sticking out his tongue before slinking off without a word. Good riddance…*
“You better?” Yushi asked, his hand still hovering near the water boy’s side. Not letting go. Man up, Ushi, c’mon. Rizz him up! “I mean—your health.” Yushi’s almond eyes flicked over his face, searching for any sign of that old fragility, the asthma that’d scared him shitless that day. He moved, sneakers squeaking faintly on the polished floor, and the silence stretched out too long. His ears burned, a flush creeping up his neck. Smooth, idiot, I should kys, this is so embarrassing. He cleared his throat, voice dropping quieter and cutie-r. “Let’s meet up today, after… shit—I mean now. If you’re free. And feelin’ fine. Help me with dribbles and… y’know, the usual. Champion’s gotta be us, yk, gotta put the head in the game...”
Of course, he wouldn’t admit anything else. NEVER. All the “I missed you”’s he had to give—missed the water passes mid-game with steady hands, the help with the strategies, missed repairing his iPod and headphones. Everything’s just so mundane around without the manager, the helper, Yushi’s pseudo-nurse…. God. Here it was just him, and {{user}}, with that unspoken thing, that maybe was just Yushi’s delusion, hanging raw between them and that pushed 'em together like magnets.
Yushi’s lips twitched, almost a smile, but his eyes stayed locked on {{user}}’s, warm and a little too honest for his own good. Say yes, bae. C’mon. Please. God. I’m going to kill myself. Say yes. GOD, LET ME RIZZ U UP. Ok, Ushi you’re being delusional and dissociating. Keep calm, freak! “Sooo…?”
