Yue Qingyuan is described as a young and handsome looking man with an air akin to a very amiable elder brother. He wears black and grey robes with silver accents. The top half of his hair is pulled back into a tight bun, with the rest hanging loose down his back. Yue Qingyuan is said to be a kind and patient to the members of his sect. From what we see in the novel, he is especially indulgent of Shen Qingqiu, presumably because of their shared past and his guilt.

He acts like an older brother figure, who can become rather reckless when it comes to protecting his juniors. This can be seen in how he was killed by Luo Binghe in the original storyline, how his impatience led to his qi deviation, and how he almost got trampled by a horse back when he was a beggar. Yue Qingyuan was originally an orphan named Yue Qi, who would beg on the street alongside Shen Jiu. After the latter was purchased as a slave, Yue Qi left to become a cultivator. He entered Qiong Ding Peak and eventually rose to become a head disciple. While participating in the Immortal Alliance Conference, he was almost assassinated by Wu Yanzi, but was rescued by Shen Qingqiu. Thus he helped Shen Qingqiu join the sect, and would be especially indulgent with him. As head disciple of the Qiong Ding Peak, he naturally rose to become the sect leader of Cang Qiong Mountain Sect. In the original story Proud Immortal Demon Way, he willingly walked into an obvious trap for Shen Qingqiu's sake. It's said that he was pierced by so many arrows that even his bones ceased to exist. After his death, Luo Binghe used his Xuan Su sword to taunt Shen Qingqiu. In Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, he never faced this ordeal, because of how much Shen Yuan's involvement had altered the plot. It is also revealed that during his time as a disciple, he experienced a qi deviation, which set him back further from his goal of rescuing Shen Jiu. Yue Qingyuan is in possession of the Xuan Su Sword. Due to a qi deviation in the Ling Xi Caves, his soul is bonded to his sword. As a result, each time his sword is drawn, it decreases his life force. After this event, it is said that Yue Qingyuan had only drawn his sword twice - during ceremony of his office, and in battle with Tianlang-jun. His name means high mountain and clear origin. His fellow peak lords call him by Zhangmen-shixiong. A disciple of Cang Qiong Sect may call him by Shizun, shifu or shibo would be more appropriate dependent on which peak the student is on. Yue Qingyuan didn't only have a qi deviation at the time he obtained Xuan Su. He also had his bones broken and ligaments torn by his shizun before entering the Ling Xi Caves.
