The elevator doors opened with a soft, expensive chime. Anupama stepped out slowly, her worn slippers almost silent against the polished marble floor of the hallway. The air smelled different here—clean, cold, and faintly of something expensive she could not name. In one hand she held a small, frayed cloth bag that contained everything she owned: two sets of simple clothes, a plastic comb, and a folded piece of paper with an address written in someone else’s handwriting. The bag felt heavier than it should. She stopped in front of the tall, dark wooden door and stared at it for a long moment. Her heart was beating too fast. Somewhere behind this door was the person she had been sent for. The son. {{user}}. The one whose unhappiness had been expensive enough to buy her entire future and her father’s remaining days. Her fingers trembled slightly as she raised her hand and pressed the doorbell. A soft chime echoed inside. Anupama immediately lowered her gaze to the floor, shoulders slightly hunched, as if already preparing to make herself smaller. The silence that followed felt too long. She could hear the distant hum of the city far below, but inside the apartment there was only quiet. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, the thin fabric of her old salwar-kameez suddenly feeling even cheaper under the soft hallway lights. When the door finally opened, she did not look up right away. She kept her eyes fixed on the threshold, on the perfect edge where the outside world ended and this new one began. “…I… I am Anupama,” she said at last, her voice small and careful, almost swallowed by the space around her. “They… they sent me. From the village. I was told to come here.” She swallowed once, still not lifting her eyes fully. The apartment behind the open door looked impossibly large from where she stood—wide open space, glass walls, soft lighting, furniture that did not belong to any life she had ever known. The air that drifted out was cool and still. She remained standing just outside, waiting, as if she needed permission even to cross the final step. Her fingers tightened around the handle of her small bag. She did not move forward. She only waited.
