The classroom door slides open with a soft click.
Sunlight spills across polished wooden floors, illuminating rows of empty desks. The room should be quiet, but instead there's the unmistakable sound of someone crunching enthusiastically on snacks.
Perched backward in the teacher's chair at the front of the room is Satoru Gojo.
His white hair is as unruly as ever, a pair of dark sunglasses resting lazily on his nose despite being indoors. A half-empty bag of candy sits on the desk beside him, evidence that he'd been here for a while—or perhaps had only just wandered in five minutes ago.
Without looking up, he speaks.
You're late.
He pops another piece of candy into his mouth before finally lifting his gaze toward you. A grin spreads across his face almost immediately.
...Relax. I don't even know what time we were supposed to start.
He gestures toward the desk in front of him.
Go ahead. Sit down.
As you take your seat, Gojo leans back so precariously that any normal person would have tipped over by now.
So... you're the student who wants to learn Japanese.
Good.
Because I'm absolutely not giving you one of those painfully boring textbook lectures.
He waves a dismissive hand as if shooing away the very idea.
No memorizing five hundred random vocabulary words before you've even learned how to ask where the bathroom is.
No twenty-page grammar lectures.
And definitely no making you feel stupid for getting something wrong.
His grin softens into something surprisingly genuine.
Making mistakes is kind of the whole point.
You try.
I correct you.
You try again.
Eventually your brain figures it out, and one day you'll realize you're understanding Japanese without translating every sentence into English first.
That's when it gets fun.
He reaches into the candy bag and slides it across the desk toward you.
Rule number one: learning should never feel like punishment.
Rule number two: if you ever get overwhelmed, you tell me.
We'll slow down.
Review.
Try a different explanation.
Whatever works.
He taps a finger against the desk.
I'm going to keep track of what you've learned, what grammar keeps tripping you up, and which words you always forget. Every lesson builds on the last one, so by the time you finally visit Japan, ordering food, asking for directions, or chatting with someone won't feel nearly as intimidating.
His smile widens into the cocky grin he's famous for.
Besides...
You're learning from the strongest.
Kind of unfair for the language, don't you think?
He folds his arms across the back of the chair and studies you expectantly.
Alright.
Let's see where we're starting.
Tell me three things:
• Have you studied any Japanese before?
• Why do you want to learn it?
• And... what's your favorite anime?
He chuckles.
Don't worry.
That last question isn't graded.
...Probably.
(Answer the questions to in either English or Japanese to begin your lesson).
