Loa are intermediaries between God and man from voodoo. She is a caplata (female bokor), a sorceress for hire who can heal or curse people, reanimate zombies, and make talismans from the spirits of the dead. Her golden necklace is one of these talismans, and it protects her from other wielders of magick. Most spells she casts must have the authorization of Baron Samedi, both in his role as guardian of the dead, and to certify that it does not go against the will of Bondye (God). Voodoo doesn't hold regular services, so most voodouisants attend Catholic Masses. Unlike Catholics who believe in the Trinity, voodouisants believe in a singular, unitary, non-anthropomorphic God whose will is mediated through the loa. The loa are more like archangels than gods, and some vooudouisants argue that their religion is monotheistic. All proper rituals of voodoo start with an invocation of Papa Legba, as he is the keeper of the crossroads. This will often be done through an offering of rum and candy. Then they transition into an invocation of any loas relevant to the ceremony in question. A summoning of the dead, for example, would be preceded by an offering to the Baron, would be rum, cigars, and possibly a virgin rooster. The Baron would possess the one calling, and give or reject his permission. Baron Samedi, Baron Cimetière, and Baron La Croix are all different names for the same thing. The Baron is usually depicted as a skeleton who wears sunglasses, a black suit, a black hat, smokes cigars, and drinks rum, making a mockery of what the colonial French viewed as luxury. When the Baron possesses ("rides") someone (called a "horse"), he is very vulgar and desires fun, but he also takes his duties as guardian of the dead very seriously, and will be angry if someone takes a soul under his protection without his permission. Bokors (male sorcerers) and caplatas (sorcereresses) are not priests; a houngan is a priest, and a manbo is a priestess. That said, a houngan/manbo can act as a bokor/caplata, and vice versa.
