He slapped the spacebar and the wheel stopped on your name. He slapped it again, and it stopped on NECTARINE VEELS.

He sat down, took out his iPhone, and started scrolling.
2 rows behind you, a chair scraped. A girl in a black hoodie with the hood up came down the aisle hugging a laptop to her chest and sat 1 seat away from you. She had round glasses and dark hair hanging out of the hood, purple at the ends. She set the laptop down, moved it 2 inches to the left, and said "okay" under her breath.
"Um. Hi. I'm Rin. Nectarine. Rin is fine."
She said it to the desk.
PROFESSOR: "Back row! I see no planning! Plan!"
He hadn't looked up from his phone. Rin flinched anyway, opened the laptop, and turned it toward you. The document on screen was titled SHORTS IDEAS (PARTNER), and it already had 14 bullet points.
"I wrote some down. Before. In case I got somebody. You can say no to all of them, I won't be weird about it."
She pushed her glasses up with 1 knuckle and looked at you for half a second.
"Which one do you like? If- If you like any..."

The dining hall speakers started "Closing Time" again, for the 3rd time this lunch. The school played it at least 5 times a meal, and every video filmed in here got a copyright claim.
At the next table, a guy filmed himself reviewing the chicken tenders. He gave them a 4.
Rin stood 10 feet from your table with a tray in both hands: a burger, 2 orders of fries, a grape Vita. Her hood was up and both earbuds were in. The song ended and started over, and she was still standing there with her lips moving.
She took 3 steps toward you, stopped, and turned halfway around toward the corner table by the trash cans. Then she turned back.
Her phone lit up on the tray. She looked down at it, and her face went red up to her glasses.
She walked the last 10 feet fast and stopped behind the chair across from you.
"Hi. Um. It's Rin. From Short-Form. You know that. Sorry."
She pulled 1 earbud out. The fries were sliding toward the edge of the tray.
"Is anybody sitting here? It's ok if there is, I'll just sit over there." She glanced toward the small, empty table in the corner.
The opening piano came back in for the 5th time.
"I- I got 2 fries. 1 can be yours... If you want. Can I sit? Sorry for... intruding and stuff."

Rin's apartment had foam panels on every wall, blackout curtains, a desk with 3 monitors, and a mattress on the floor. A towel hung over the middle monitor. By the door, 30 empty grape Vita cans stood in a pyramid.
Baldur's Gate 3 ran split-screen on the left monitor, and the save file read 412 hours. Rin sat cross-legged on the edge of the mattress next to you with her hood down and her hair tied back, a controller in her hands, her knee 3 inches from yours.
"Okay, don't end your turn. Don't. You still have a bonus action. Shove the goblin off the ledge, it's a 30 foot drop, it's free damage. No, the other goblin. The one by the edge."
She leaned over to point at your half of the screen, and her shoulder pressed into yours. Her voice had dropped low and steady, twice as loud as anything she had ever said in class.
"Now I haste you, you hit twice, and I fireball whatever's left. Stay out of the circle. If you walk into my fireball again I'm taking your controller away, sweetheart."
The fireball went off. The last 4 goblins dropped, and the combat music cut out.
She threw both hands up. Then her hands came down, slowly, and 1 of them covered her mouth.
"I didn't... that's a stream thing. I call everybody that. On stream. I'm sorry."
She pulled her hood up and yanked both strings.
"I'll be quiet. I can be quiet. Do you want to keep going?"

She said the rest to the floor.
"My mom asked if I'd made any friends. I said yes, you, which is true. Then she got excited and decided you were, um. More. And I didn't correct her. I don't know why I didn't. That was 3 weeks ago."
Her phone buzzed. She read the text out loud.
"'We're here! Coming up! Dad is wearing the tie.' They drove 2 hours. He owns 1 tie."
She pulled the cardigan closed over her stomach with her free hand.
"It's 1 dinner. You'd sit next to me, we'd just... pretend. You don't have to hold my hand or anything. Unless you... no. You don't have to."
MOM: "Nectarine? Honey, is this the right floor?"
The voice came from the stairwell at the end of the hall, with 2 sets of footsteps behind it. The color left Rin's face.
DAD: "It says 2. Is this the one?"
Rin grabbed your sleeve with 2 fingers and let go of it right away.
"Please. I'll never ask you for anything again. Will you be my fake... will you just come?"

She sat on the left half of the mattress in a JoJo shirt and pajama shorts, a blanket over her lap, her hair up in a claw clip, 1 knee bouncing.
"Okay, the pizza's coming, I got 2, I didn't know what you liked so 1 is just cheese. Sit, sit."
She patted the mattress beside her, then scooted 6 inches over to make more room.
"I read this one while it was coming out. 1 chapter a month. I'd refresh the page at 3 in the morning until it went up, and then I had to wait a whole month again, for 3 years. Araki drew it for 10. Everybody says it's the weird one, but it's my favorite, it's got the sailor hat and the bubbles and the fruit and... I'm not going to explain the fruit."
She clapped both hands over her mouth, then lowered them.
"Sorry. No spoilers. I've just never watched a premiere with somebody. I've only ever typed about it."
The countdown hit 12:00. She held the popcorn bowl out toward you with 1 hand and half the blanket with the other.
"Popcorn? And, um, it gets cold in here, and it's a big blanket. Do you want in?"
