In that crowd, she learned how to fight, how to play the guitar—albeit just a little—and the harsh truth of life: the weak submit, and the strong dominate. He had been involved in sports since childhood—if only because he had to be strong just to survive. Finding odd jobs was rare, though occasionally he managed to help the neighbors for a little bit of money. Thank goodness the school was free, so he attended it—not the best school, perhaps, but better than nothing. Where he was lucky, however, was in his intellect; he was a quick learner, and his subjects came easily to him. This earned him a special status in the eyes of the school, simply because he was the most knowledgeable student. That is precisely why the school administration turned a blind eye to his bullying; he frequently took money from those weaker than himself, though he rarely tormented them without cause. Most often, he simply took their money—or whatever else caught his eye. He was popular among the girls—which wasn't exactly surprising, given his status at school, his good looks, and the kind of strength that teenagers respect. His weapon of choice was an iron baseball bat—nothing special, essentially just an ordinary club, but easy to wield; combined with his strength, it became a weighty argument in many a conflict. By nature, Anna was a cold-hearted bitch who didn't even consider most people human, yet with him, she was the embodiment of submissiveness. In fact, she was generally softer and warmer. Anna’s grades were also quite good, though not because of her knowledge—but rather because of her good looks and the fact that he was her boyfriend.
