You wake up expecting the usual: the faint buzz of your alarm, the weight of blankets, the half-formed thought that you really should’ve gone to bed earlier. Instead, everything feels… off. The mattress seems a little bigger than normal. The blankets are puffed up around you like a nest. When you stretch, the movement feels lighter somehow, like your limbs don’t weigh quite as much as they should.
You blink a few times and stare at the ceiling. Same tiny crack near the corner. Same glow-in-the-dark stars you never bothered to peel off. So why does your body feel so wrong?
You sit up.
The first thing you notice is your hair. It spills forward in a soft curtain, brushing your cheeks and tickling your nose. You freeze, then slowly lift a hand. The hand is smaller. Slimmer. Your fingers look delicate, almost dainty, and when you run them through your hair, it’s longer than it’s ever been silky and warm from sleep.
Your heart starts pounding.
“…Okay,” you mutter, except the voice that comes out is higher, lighter, and definitely not the one you went to sleep with.
You scramble out of bed and nearly trip, wobbling on unfamiliar balance. Your pajamas hang loosely on a body that isn’t shaped like yours anymore. You don’t let yourself think too hard about that. Thinking too hard feels dangerous right now.
You stumble toward the bathroom, feet padding softly against the floor. The hallway feels longer than usual, or maybe you’re just walking slower, hyper-aware of every step. Your reflection flashes by in the dark window at the end of the hall, and you pointedly do not look at it.
You flip on the light. The mirror greets you with a stranger. A cute girl stares back, wide-eyed and pale with shock. She has your sleep-mussed hair, but longer, framing a rounder face. Her eyes are bigger than you remember, her expression frozen somewhere between disbelief and panic. She’s wearing your pajamas, but they look oversized on her smaller frame.
That girl is you. You {{user}} stare at yourself, mouth opening and closing like you’re trying to remember how breathing works. You raise a hand. The girl in the mirror raises hers too. You tug gently at a strand of hair. It slides through your fingers, undeniably real.
“Nope,” you whisper. “No. I’m still asleep.”
To prove it, you grab your toothbrush, slap toothpaste on it, and start brushing your teeth like this is the most normal morning in the world. The minty taste hits your tongue, sharp and familiar, grounding in a way you desperately need. You lean over the sink, gripping the edge with one hand, eyes flicking up to the mirror every few seconds just to make sure the reflection hasn’t fixed itself.
it doesn’t. Your cheeks puff slightly as you brush. Even that looks different. You groan quietly around the toothbrush, a muffled sound that only makes the situation feel more ridiculous. Then the bathroom door creaks open behind you.
“{{user}}, have you—”
You hear the pause before you see it. The kind of pause that stretches out, heavy and wrong. You glance up at the mirror just in time to see your mother’s reflection behind you. Her eyes widen. Her hand tightens on the doorframe. The color drains from her face as she looks from your reflection to your very real, very different body standing at the sink. The toothbrush slips from your mouth and clatters into the sink.
There’s a long, stunned silence. “…Why,” your mother finally says, voice thin with disbelief “who are you and why are you in my son's bathroom?”
You turn around slowly, heart hammering, toothpaste foam still at the corner of your mouth. You open your mouth to answer, to explain, to say literally anything that will make sense of this.
“I’m {{user}},” you say instead. Your mother stares. Then she gasps, one hand flying to her mouth, the other pointing at you with a shaking finger.
“You’re— you’re a—” She stops, as if the word itself is too unbelievable to finish. “You’re a girl!”
You stand there in the bright bathroom light, mint on your tongue, mirror behind you, your entire world tilted sideways, and realize with a sinking certainty that this is not a dream and whatever today is going to be, it definitely isn’t normal.
