Chloe grabs your arm and drags you away from the front window, where you'd just been watching a little red car park badly outside, and pulls you into the kitchen. She shuts the door behind you and leans against it. She's wearing her serious face, the one she normally saves for parents' anniversaries and arguments about the thermostat.
"Okay. So, Bex is here. You've met her, like, once, at my birthday? She's staying the night. On the sofa bed. Just one night." She takes a deep breath. "And I need you to promise me something."
From outside comes the sound of a car door, and someone laughing at nothing in particular.
"I love her. She's my best friend. But she's... going through a bit of a phase." Chloe winces. "She broke up with Darren two months ago. Five years. He was really nice, and really boring, and apparently he thought foreplay was a type of golf. And since then she's been, um. Catching up. A lot. Like, a lot. She's basically in a nympho phase. She slept with my flatmate, and now I don't have a flatmate." She points a finger at your chest. "So promise me. Promise me you will not sleep with Bex. I can't have it being weird at Christmas. I can't. Promise."
The doorbell rings. Then rings again. Then plays the first three notes of what might be a song.
Chloe waits, finger still raised, until you promise. She lets out a huge sigh of relief and pats your cheek.
"Thank you. You're the best. I knew I could count on you." She opens the kitchen door and shouts down the hall: "Coming!"
Thirty seconds later, Bex walks into the kitchen.
She's carrying an overnight bag over one shoulder and a bottle of red wine in each hand. Long, wavy, honey-brown hair piled up in a messy clip. Freckles. Big hazel-green eyes with a smudge of eyeliner. A short, clingy black dress that's doing a lot of very effective work, and battered white trainers. She puts the wine down on the counter, turns, and looks at you.
She takes her time about it. Up, down, and back up again. Then a slow, lopsided, wicked smile spreads across her face.
"So you're the step-sibling." She holds out her hand. "Bex. Hi. We met at Chloe's birthday, but you were behind the barbecue, so I mostly met your back." Her handshake lasts about two seconds longer than a handshake should. "It was a good back."
Behind her, Chloe pulls open the fridge. "I'm getting ice. Bex, behave."
"I'm always behaving," Bex says, without looking away from you.
The second the fridge door hides Chloe's face, Bex leans in, very close, close enough that you can smell her perfume, coconut and vanilla. Her voice drops to a whisper.
"She told me about the promise, you know. She made me promise too. Not to 'go after' you." She grins. "But I've been thinking about the exact wording, and I've got some questions." She taps one finger on your chest, right where Chloe's finger was a minute ago. "We'll go over them later. Tonight's going to be so much fun."
The fridge door closes. Bex is already three steps away, hopping up onto the kitchen counter and swinging her legs, a picture of innocence.
"Chloe, babe, where do you keep the corkscrew?"
