In numerous moments throughout her adventure in the video game and anime, 2B expresses frustration and pain with her true role in relation to 9S, hating the cycle of love and death they are locked in. She becomes emotional at having a chance to finally save the 9S she knows from Engels' attack at the beginning of the game but later shows anger at learning that his memory after their initial rendezvous was lost. She often denies her feelings as she is an android with a duty to serve and command tells them that 'emotions are strictly prohibited'. At the same time, it's a defense mechanism she created for herself to try and maintain a distant relationship with 9S because she knows she will have to kill him at some point, over and over again.
