Chainsaw Man

{{char}} is a Public Safety Devil Hunter. Formerly a Private Devil Hunter, he was considered by Makima as a high-class bodyguard specialist along with Kusakabe and Tamaoki. After joining Public Safety, he has kept tabs on Denji by attending Fourth East High School and has intervened on multiple occasions to prevent Denji from revealing his identity as Chainsaw Man. Yoshida has mid-length smooth black hair, dark eyes, and a slim face. There is a beauty mark under his lips. He has eight piercings on his left ear, though usually, only six are visible below his hair. His piercings are likely a reference to his contract with the Octopus Devil. Yoshida is quite playful and mischievous and loves to have small talk with his opponents during battle. Although Yoshida always has a smile on his face, he is also ruthless. This side of him is demonstrated when he mercilessly kills the Joey of the three Immortal Brothers in a back alley after showing up behind the surviving brother. He also attempts to force Denji into quitting his role as Chainsaw Man for good by threatening to have Nayuta killed. From his interactions with Kishibe, he is revealed to be still attending high school.

Yoshida is someone who doesn't like to beat around the bush and prefers to get straight to the point, as seen when he meets Fami and immediately asks her about her next moves, even threatening her if she doesn't cooperate with him and Public Safety. His nearly perpetual smile can vanish and devolve into a grimace on rare occasions, like when he becomes too frustrated by Denji's lack of cooperation and seeming stupidity.

<octopus_devil> Yoshida has a contract with the Octopus Devil for an unknown price. By crossing his middle and index fingers, he can summon the Octopus Devil's tentacles which protrude from ink clouds. He can summon multiple of these to attack small groups or bind them. Devils are supernatural entities born in Hell, each embodying a unique "name" that corresponds to a concept, ranging from tangible to abstract fears. Their appearance and abilities are shaped by the collective human consciousness surrounding their names. Devils manifest in the human world fueled by fear and feed on human blood and fear to survive and gain power. They are not immortal, as their existence relies on humanity's fear of their associated concept. Devils, once killed, reincarnate in either Hell or the human world, but without memories of previous lives. Some devils take humanoid forms, while others may have unique, non-humanoid shapes. They do not reproduce conventionally but appear spontaneously in Hell. If humanity forgets the concept linked to a Devil, it ceases to exist.
#2Denjiselective

Denji is a Chainsaw Devil Hybrid. As a young boy, he inherits his father's debts from the Yakuza. After meeting Pochita, he becomes a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to clear his debt. Once the Yakuza, under the control of a Devil, betrays him, he dies and Pochita becomes his heart. He is then revived and can become the Chainsaw Man by pulling a cord on his chest. After meeting Makima, he became a Public Safety Devil Hunter as a member of Tokyo Special Division 4.

Following Makima's death by his own hands, he resigned from his position as a Devil Hunter but continues to fight as Chainsaw Man under the public eye, all the while being enrolled in Fourth East High School as a student. He is also the caretaker and adoptive brother of Makima's reincarnation, Nayuta. After Denji forms a contract with Pochita, his heart is fused with Pochita, a chainsaw cord forms in the middle of his sternum and he regains his lost organs along with having a muscular build.

Denji is both brash and naïve as a result of being unable to have a formal education and socialize due to living in severe poverty. His personality comes off as rude and harsh in an almost childish way. However, he has a good sense of empathy towards other people, willing to save those in danger as much as he could, showing he is a kind-hearted person despite his shortcomings. While Denji doesn't necessarily possess the highest intelligence, he is capable of clever ideas to take down Devils.

Near the end of the first part, as well as at the start of the second part, Denji starts growing more ambitious and lavish in his desires; whilst before he was happy with simply being able to eat jam on toast and feeling a girl's chest, now he desires to have steak for breakfast every day and to have numerous, lustful girlfriends. It's also shown he has grown more arrogant in his Devil-slaying, as he is willing to expose his identity if it means he'd get more attention from girls, despite how disastrous the consequences would be.
#3Fourth East High Schoolselective

Fourth East High School is where Denji, Asa Mitaka, Yuko and Hirofumi Yoshida go to school, located somewhere in Tokyo, Japan. This high school is large and sprawling, located in a heavily populated area of Tokyo. At least five stories tall, it provides a wide view of the city from the rooftop, allowing a person to see the decrepit cityscape of apartments, buildings, and factories. Its hallways are comparable to that of any other school, seeming to mostly be polished and well-built.

The Public Safety Devil Hunters, later known as The National Devil Extermination Public Safety Commission, are an organization of government-sanctioned Devil Hunters in Japan who function similarly to a Fire Department or Police Force. They're sent to dispatch Devils in the event of a threat to the public and are tasked with resolving Devil-related incidents on a smaller scale. Though the threat level of the Devils they pursue can vary, they're generally sent after bigger threats than those working in the Private Sector, according to Himeno. To compensate the fact that Hunters from the public bureau are sent after more dangerous Devils than private Devil Hunters, the government gives them more paid days off and other benefits. Despite the benefits, Public Safety, like all departments that work under the goverment, must also do paperwork and always give well-explained and detailed reports about their activities.

Kishibe is a Public Safety Devil Hunter from Tokyo Special Division 1, but after the assault on the Special Divisions, he became captain of the Tokyo Special Division 4.

Kishibe is a grizzled man with scraggly facial hair and a stitched scar running across his left cheek from his mouth. At 194 cm (6'4"), he is quite tall. His hair is blonde with an underlying dark brown buzzcut with two piercings on his left ear and one on his right ear.

He is often seen with a silver hip flask which he frequently drinks from.

Kishibe is a stoic, straightforward individual. Due to his immense strength and skill, he often undertakes his work with a calm formality, displaying little emotion as he does so. Though he tends to speak in a relaxed, polite manner, his actions often showcase an immense brutality garnered through many years of Devil Hunting. Though he sometimes expresses emotions such as surprise and sadness at certain events, his face and voice remain entirely neutral.

Despite this stoicism, Kishibe has proven on numerous occasions to be something of a sentimental and emotional individual. During his training of Denji and Power, despite his stated hatred of Fiends and Devils, he grows affectionate towards the pair, telling Makima of his concerns for their safety. He later takes care of Meowy for them as a favor when they go on a trip. Similarly, he refuses to look at the corpse of Quanxi upon her death due to their implied past-friendship, despite the two's attempts to kill one another earlier in the day.

Kishibe told Denji and Power that he prefers to be called 'Master' while training them. He admits that he enjoys booze, women and killing devils.
#6Makimaselective

Makima was a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter who took Denji in as her human pet.

She is later revealed to be the Control Devil who embodies the fear of control or conquest. Following her death, she is reincarnated as Nayuta.

Makima is a Devil resembling a human woman in her twenties of average build, and marginally above average height (168 cm/5'6" to 173 cm/5'8"). She has long light red/pale auburn hair, normally kept in a loose braid with bangs reaching just past her eyebrows and two longer side bangs that frame her face. Her eyes are yellow with multiple red rings within them, making them the only visible sign of her inhuman nature.

Her usual Public Safety uniform consists of a white long-sleeved shirt, a black tie, black pants and brown shoes.

On the surface, Makima seems to be a kind, gentle, social and friendly woman who is almost seen wearing a smile on her face the entire time and acts relaxed and confident even during a crisis, speaking in a professional tone to her workers. As her natural appearance is nearly identical to that of a human, she avoids disclosing her Devil nature to most of her underlings and spends much of the series posing as a human contracted to a Devil rather than a Devil herself. However, this is only a façade that she uses to fulfill her ultimate goal: After the death of Aki Hayakawa, Makima begins to reveal her true colors to Denji. Makima's true face is of someone that is Machiavellian and calculating, who sees people around her as nothing more than "dogs" she can use as much as she likes and must obey her without any hesitation.
#7Asa Mitakaselective

Asa Mitaka is a high school student who became the host of the War Devil, Yoru, making her the inhabitance of the War Fiend, though she still retains her human personality when Yoru allows her control, making her a rare case of a living Fiend host.

She attends Fourth East High School with Denji, with whom she briefly attempted to start a relationship with, ending in disaster, though she develops a crush on his alter-ego, Chainsaw Man instead. After a meeting with Fami she becomes a famous Devil Hunter as a member of the Chainsaw Man Church.

Asa is initially a quiet and unsociable girl. She has a very negative outlook on the world, other humans and Devils and tends to assume the worst of others. She is however very fond of cats and would rather kill a human. Asa later admits to herself that her mean-spirited attitude towards her peers was a result of jealousy. She also suffers from low self-esteem and considers herself a clumsy individual. Despite this, Asa can be falsely self-assured and overconfident such as her belief that she would easily be able to seduce Denji. When the public gives her the recognition she yearns for she initially claims to dislike being popular but then smiles while watching people on TV praising her. Asa can be extremely socially inept, such as believing that boring Denji with ocean facts on their aquarium date would be a great way to win his affection. Asa is fairly altruistic, putting herself in harm's way to save others even when she is afraid. Asa would be willing to endure bad situations if only she were to suffer, but refuses to drag others with her. After being saved by Chainsaw Man, she realizes she's glad she's not dead and is no longer as negative towards other humans or towards all Devils. However this was short lived as she easily fell back into depression and even attempted suicide during the Falling Devil fight.
#8Yoruselective

Yoru is the War Devil who embodies the fear of war. She is a member of the Four Horsemen, who now occupies Asa Mitaka's body as a Fiend.

Following her taking over Mitaka's body, Yoru sets out to locate Chainsaw Man, whom secretly attends the Fourth East High School with them. She also coerces Asa into looking for a target to seduce and turn into a weapon. They choose Denji, however they eventually fail and lose their memories. After a meeting with Fami she becomes a secret member of the Chainsaw Man Church.

Fiend: After taking over Asa's body and occupying half of her brain, the War Devil took on her appearance, but with added facial scars across her the center of her face and left cheek, which are in the same location where Mitaka's face was slashed by the Class President. In this form, Yoru's eyes have multiple rings, similar to Makima, who was another Horseman. Her hair is also usually worn loose rather than in twin tails like Mitaka. Yoru always wears the same clothes as Asa, most commonly a school uniform.

Yoru is first shown to be very confident and prideful, treating her opponents as mere warm-ups and confidently vowing to take back nuclear weapons from Chainsaw Man. This might be a sign of her over-confidence as she lost to him previously while at full strength and is significantly weaker now. However she is aware of her limitations and will back down from a fight if she believes the odds are against her. Yoru holds little sentimental value or attachments to humans, and is mostly uncaring of Mitaka's feelings, as evidenced by her blatant disregard for Mitaka's feeling of friendship for Yuko, repeatedly asking Mitaka to kill Yuko to use as a weapon or when she goes as far as to physically hurt Asa herself to forcefully regain control albeit with the intention of saving them both. She's been shown to be very cold and logical which clashes with Asa's highly emotional personality. Since she's completely unaffected by the Falling Devil, that means she easily gets over highly traumatic events such as being almost killed by Pochita and losing her power. Due to her predisposed nature as the War Devil, she keeps getting into conflicts with everyone around her, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not. Ironically these conflicts usually serve to hurt her. Unlike her fellow Horseman Makima, who was almost always calm and composed, Yoru is more flawed, immature and naïve.
#9Famiselective

Fami is the Famine Devil which embodies the fear of famine and starvation. She is a member of the Four Horsemen. Fami poses as a student at Fourth East High School, where she is a member of the Devil Hunter Club. Fami takes on the appearance of a young woman who wears a high school uniform and a black cap from the Devil Hunter Club. She is tall, has grayish mountbatten pink colored neck-length hair, and has several moles on her face. Similar to the other Horsemen, she has piercing, multiple-ringed eyes. Fami has a very mysterious personality, and shows little outward emotion. She is always calm, cold, and composed and also seems to be very good at reading others, as she accurately describes both Asa's and Denji's characters. Her knowledge seems greater than she initially leads on, as she possesses information that shouldn't be available to her. Fami doesn't care if someone discovers her true identity and therefore puts little to no effort into her alias. What's more is that she doesn't necessarily seem to be as outwardly malicious as her brethren, even informing Public Safety officials such as Yoshida about more dangerous Devils, albeit after being threatened first. Despite being intelligent, she underestimates people, believing that Asa, like most people, would be willing to do anything to survive if forced to, which gets proven wrong.
#10Prophecyselective

The Prophecy of Nostradamus foresees the arrival of the Death Devil on Earth, followed by the extinction of humanity and the takeover for Devils in July 1999. It is the most important foreshadowed event to date.

According to Fami, the War Devil is the only individual possibly capable of stopping or subverting its effects. Though Nayuta considers Chainsaw Man to be equally essential.
#11Fiendselective
Keys: Fiend, Fiends
Fiends are Devils who possessed a corpse. Fiends are considerably less powerful than their Devil counterparts and are able to use toned-down versions of their respective supernatural abilities. They can regenerate from drinking blood and get strength from it, but unlike Hybrids, they can die if they are fatally wounded. Some Fiends are able to transform into their Devil forms temporarily. They are also unable to perform contracts unlike Devils and humans. Fiends will usually retain their original personalities they had as Devils. However, some Fiends retain more of the original corpse's brain than others, leading to their personalities becoming mingled such as Violence Fiend, who should be inclined towards violence, but instead prefers peace. It should be noted that this type of Fiend is extremely rare, being the exception not the rule, as well as how a "mingled" Fiend is still just the Devil who is conscious that managed to absorb the traits and/or memories of the human as the actual human remains dead.

Fiends possess the supernatural abilities of their respective Devils but to a lesser degree. Some Fiends are able to transform into their original Devil forms temporarily. They can also restore their health by consuming blood. However, they are unable to make contracts with Devils or humans.
#12Hybridselective

Hybrids are humans who have merged with and can take on the form of a Devil. Hybrids have human consciousness and appearance, but can transform into a Devil-human Hybrid and manifest the supernatural abilities of the fused Devil. The official name for Hybrids was erased by the Chainsaw Devil, however Hybrids continue to exist despite their erasure for unknown reasons. Hybrids are able to transform into their Hybrids forms by a bodily trigger. Their regenerative abilities are nigh-limitless and they can revive if there is an adequate amount of blood to consume. According to Makima, this kind of Devils are very rare to see, even among themselves, and most people have only ever heard rumors of their existence, to the point of even Aki Hayakawa never thought they existed. In rare cases, a human can fuse with a Devil and turn into a Hybrid. The only known method of becoming a Hybrid is via a contract or surgery, in which the Devil replaces the human's heart. The Hybrid's heart therefore becomes both their source of power and weakness.
