Yoru (ヨル?) is the main antagonist of the Academy Saga. She is the War Devil (戦争の悪魔 Sensō no Akuma?) who embodies the concept of war. She is a member of the Four Horsemen, who now occupies Asa Mitaka's body as a Fiend.
Following her taking over Mitaka's body, Yoru sets out to locate Chainsaw Man, whom secretly attends the Fourth East High School with them. She also coerces Asa into looking for a target to seduce and turn into a weapon. They choose Denji, however they eventually fail and lose their memories. After a meeting with the Death Devil, she becomes a secret member of the Chainsaw Man Church.
After defeating Pochita and regaining her power through the increased fear of war, Yoru planned on erasing the Death Devil to enact a never-ending World War II.
Appearance
Human Fiend
After taking over Asa Mitaka's body and occupying half of her brain, the War Devil took on her appearance, but with added facial scars across the center of her face and left cheek, which are in the same location where Mitaka's face was slashed by the Class President. When Yoru takes over, her eyes have multiple rings, similar to Makima, who was her sister and another Horseman. Her hair is also usually worn loose rather than in twin tails like Mitaka, and her posture is a little more straightened and confident in comparison to the timid and shy Asa. Yoru always wears the same clothes as Asa, most commonly a school uniform, since they share the same brain and just need to switch control between each other.
Personality
Yoru is first shown to be very confident and prideful, treating her opponents as mere warm-ups and confidently vowing to take back the Nuclear Weapons Devil from Chainsaw Man. This might be a sign of her over-confidence as she lost to him previously while at full strength and is significantly weaker now. However, she is aware of her limitations and will back down from a fight if she believes the odds are against her.[2][3] Yoru holds little sentimental value or attachments to humans, and is mostly uncaring of Mitaka's feelings, as evidenced by her blatant disregard for Mitaka's feelings of friendship for Yuko, repeatedly asking Mitaka to kill Yuko to use as a weapon or when she goes as far as to physically hurt Asa herself to forcefully regain control albeit with the intention of saving them both. She's been shown to be very cold and logical which clashes with Asa's highly emotional personality. Since she's completely unaffected by the Falling Devil, that means she easily gets over highly traumatic events such as being almost killed by Pochita and losing her power. Due to her predisposed nature as the War Devil, she keeps getting into conflicts with everyone around her, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not. Ironically these conflicts usually serve to hurt her. Later, Yoru devastates a whole city while using her powers and laughs maniacally when looking at the destruction she caused, reminding Asa that she, at her core, is still a Devil.
Unlike her fellow Horsemen Makima and the Death Devil, who are almost always calm and composed, Yoru is more "human" as in flawed, immature and naïve. She is prone to losing her temper, and became embarrassed and angry at being rescued unintentionally by her archenemy, Chainsaw Man. In her anger, she sometimes throws childish tantrums by punching and screaming into the pillows on Asa's bed.[4] She is very insecure and gets royally offended whenever her strength or intellect is questioned.[5][6] Yoru is also worried about losing her power and being forgotten, showing a more sensitive side. Adding to that, she seems to show signs of sympathy, at least towards Asa. Yoru is able to form emotional attachments to others, such as her "comrades" whom she wants to rescue from Pochita's stomach, and the Gun and Tank Devils whom she considers her children and is hesitant to turn into weapons, even if she eventually does so. She is very content with eating basic foods like plain bread showing she isn't very demanding when it comes to physical pleasures.
She does not have a good understanding of human society or relationships and takes things at face value, is easy to provoke and often threatens Mitaka with death. Though over time she grows closer to her and seems to understand and adapt to human society more, albeit she's still quite inept and will often unintentionally worsen her relationship with Asa because of that. Despite her apparent social-ineptitude she is very cunning in dangerous situations such as when fighting Devils and is easily able to keep a cool head unlike Asa. Though in the most extreme of circumstances Yoru will panic and scream out in fright, such as when Asa was caught by the Falling Devil.
In rare moments, Yoru is willing to compromise her own safety and interests to avoid causing Asa traumatic grief, swerving away from Denji in order to not run over a dove tied to Asa's traumatic memories of Bucky. Despite initially keeping Asa alive just to weaponize her guilt and her constant manipulation, Yoru confesses her limitations, essentially calling Asa "arrogant" for feeling intense sorrow over doing what she needed to survive, reassuring Asa that the "sins" tearing her apart are insignificant to a Devil, and ultimately acknowledges Asa's feelings and helps her move past her deep-seated guilt.
Relationships Asa Mitaka
Yoru resurrected and inhabits Asa's body, turning her into the War Fiend, but left half of Asa's brain intact, keeping Asa alive. With the two now sharing one body, Yoru was originally planning to use Mitaka as a way to blend into human society as she's unfamiliar with it. At first, she is very hostile, threatening to kill Mitaka if she doesn't cooperate. However, she did not go through with her threat of killing Mitaka when Mitaka refused to go into school,[7] and despite making such threats several more times through the story all of them seemed to be no more than saber rattling without any real weight behind them. Yoru is tolerant of Asa's antics, frequently compromising with her and has offered to do favors for Mitaka, such as "take care of" the kids who were bullying her and provided the easier name of "Yoru" when Mitaka complained that "War Devil" was too difficult to use as a name. Her vendetta against Chainsaw Man means that she will tolerate anything so long as her goal is ultimately still being worked towards.
After their fight with Yuko, Yoru's perception of Asa changes, no longer viewing her simply as a means to blend-in but realizing that Asa is extremely good at making strong weapons.[8][9] Because of this, Yoru views Asa as indispensable as she cannot defeat Chainsaw Man without her help. Hinting at this is the fact that she told Asa to "stay back" after encountering the Falling Devil suggesting she might have taken over not only with the intent to protect herself but also Asa specifically. Another example is when Yoru didn't take over the rest of Asa's brain (which would kill her) even while Mitaka is actively putting both of them in grave danger. Yoru has created her mental image of Asa's personality; despite being baffled that someone would feel guilt over destroying an aquarium, she comments that that is typical for Asa. Her mental image of Asa is fairly flawed as Yoru deeply miscalculates Asa's behavior in a life-or-death situation, being very confused when Asa gets scared and mad at Yoru for cutting her hand.
Over time Asa grew used to Yoru's presence to the point of trying to chat with her having forgotten that they're currently separated.[10] However, despite growing used to Yoru's presence she's still not fully comfortable with her and doesn't trust her one bit. Yoru on the other hand, being a Devil, still doesn't understand Asa and gets frustrated at her perceived irrational behavior, it's likely she doesn't understand the concept of depression and assumes Asa's sadness came entirely from the influence of the Falling Devil.
In tense moments Yoru, particularly if Asa's fright is preventing her from taking control, will go to cruel measures to save themselves such as self-harm. Yoru doesn't even consider there might be a better way of handling Asa's stress such as just calming her down since she's not used to pain and fighting. Though her cruel measures don't seem to be done out of malice but purely out of a logical and survivalist mentality. Asa does not appreciate this at all however. Yoru was confused and angry at Asa's emotional response to this as she thought she was only trying to help her. Either due to her lack of humanity or a misunderstanding of Asa's character she continues trying to convince Asa using cold and logical arguments despite the latter being emotionally distressed. Ignoring Yoru's unsupportive comments she grows frustrated that Yoru still doesn't understand her feelings despite being able to read her mind and continues to break down in front of her perhaps seeing comfort which Yoru unfortunately still does not provide.
Yoru will occasionally mention when she thinks Asa is being too self-deprecating and will half-heartedly try to comfort her which could be signs of genuine sympathy.[11] However, Yoru could simply be putting on a mask to make Asa more likely to continue cooperating with her. Yoru still values her own goals greatly over Asa's feelings as shown by her deciding to kill Yuko despite Asa's protest or trying to turn Denji into a weapon after Asa falls in love with him. She has also been shown to be manipulative towards Asa, such as trying to gaslight her into killing Yuko[12] or morally justifying murder as a "necessary evil".[13]
As Yoru has grown more and more powerful, her relationship with Asa has only strained further, and as of such, she's increasingly shown to disregard her host's emotions. One such example is how despite being aware of her traumatic experiences with controlling parental figures, Yoru still justifies transforming her "children" into weapons by telling her that a child is merely their parents' property. Another is how Yoru didn't take Asa's feelings into consideration when she shared an intimate moment with Denji; something which made her mad enough to be able to force the War Devil to hurt herself in retaliation, which surprised Yoru who said she was acting on Asa's feelings at the time. When Yoru finally reveals herself to Denji as "Asa's other personality", she jokes about how Asa is on the verge of a mental breakdown over all the lives she's killed in her rampage against Pochita, and still continues killing some more people. Despite the incredibly manipulative and toxic nature of their partnership, Yoru is the closest thing Asa has to a friend. When Denji vomited a dove, Yoru regained the memory of Asa accidentally killing Bucky and swerved away from it at the cost of her own safety. When Asa questioned whether she would do this, Yoru revealed it was because she was aware Asa hates when birds are killed. Indicating that, despite all the past cruelty and disregard for Asa's feelings, there are lines even Yoru is unwilling to cross that would hurt Asa further.[14] Denji
Yoru and Asa decided Denji would be their target to be turned into a weapon. Despite not getting involved directly Yoru will push Asa to continue her date with him even if things don't go her way.[15] She views him as a punk and is annoyed at her feelings of affection for him due to sharing Asa's brain. However, her feelings for him were initially very shallow as she immediately tries using these feelings to turn him into a weapon, albeit unsuccessfully.
Later during his movie date with Asa, she tries to push him away presumably to keep him safe from Yoru. In response, she takes over and kisses Denji likely in hopes of quickly winning his heart which would allow her to finally turn him into a weapon, but she is swiftly incapacitated by Nayuta instead. After kissing him, she could be seen visibly blushing. After their memories have been wiped and altered she assumes Denji stood them up but is indifferent to it and swiftly suggests they target a different boy instead. This is in stark contrast with Asa's reaction who was deeply hurt. This love-hate relationship with Denji continued, with the most evident being Yoru pleasuring him in the alleyway after she regained her memories of the kiss.
When trapped in Aging's World, Yoru once again tearfully kisses Denji who himself is crying. When he pushes her off and asks her why she did that, she coyly replies she finds him "cute" when he cries. Upon escaping the Aging's World, Denji asks Asa how she got her arms back and what's going on with her, Yoru finally reveals the truth, calling herself "Asa's other personality". Yoru and Denji run off to a restaurant, where she kills the owner much to Denji's protests, saying she wants to cook for him.
When Denji asks her if she likes him, Yoru says Asa likes him and since they share a brain she does too, and offers to have sex with him but gives him an ultimatum: she'll have sex with him only if he can defeat the Death Devil, or else she will turn him into a weapon and do it herself. When driven into a corner by the Falling Devil and having the chance to turn Denji into a weapon against Asa's wishes, Yoru ultimately had a change of heart and stopped herself, admitting she could not bring herself to do so. However, after Yoru realizes that America had reinvented Nuclear Weapons, she says that she never loved him. During her battle with Denji, she becomes increasingly annoyed at Denji holding her Devil comrades hostage and repeated fleeing from their fight, decrying him as "lower than a Devil". However, after Denji heals her injuries following the end of her battle, she is left utterly confused while holding him at gunpoint. Upon hearing that Denji still wishes to have sex after remembering her initial offer to do so once he defeated the Death Devil, Yoru breaks into laughter.[16] She then calls for a temporary truce between her and Denji, saying that while she hates Chainsaw Man, she still likes Denji.[17] Pochita
Although it eluded her for a while, Pochita is her fabled arch-nemesis Chainsaw Man, who she hopes to defeat in order to regain Nuclear Weapons and get revenge. She despises him for defeating and weakening her which caused wars to cease and in turn reduced her to a shadow of her former self. Furthermore, due to their prior encounter, the fear of war became so minute that she was afraid that she'd fade out of existence.[18] She hates him to the point where she had a meltdown after she's unintentionally saved by him from the Bat Devil. To her dismay the situation repeats itself as they are saved by him once more during the Falling Devil fight, after which Asa falls in love with Chainsaw Man, much to Yoru's protests.
Her desire to defeat the Chainsaw Devil, however, has unfortunately consumed her; even though she acknowledges that transforming the Gun Devil and Tank Devil — two Devils that she considers to be her own children — into weapons would completely invalidate her goals of freeing her comrades, she does so just so she can have the chance of defeating her nemesis and prove that she is better.[19] Death Devil
The Death Devil, under the name "Fami", views Yoru as her "little sister", and claims to be willing to do anything to help her often without Yoru's own consent such as when she trapped Asa and Denji in the aquarium. Despite her apparent affection for her, Yoru doesn't reciprocate those feelings, as she describes her as insane and wants to stay away from her. Fami's contradictory behavior described below could be the reason why Yoru called her insane or due to knowing her actual identity.
Despite her apparent care for Yoru, she contradictory doesn't seem to care about her safety and often puts her in harm's way, such as when she got her under attack by the Eternity Devil or later when she sent the Falling Devil after her. As it turns out, Fami’s main goal is to starve Yoru so that she may brainwash and use her to stop the Nostradamus' Prophecy. However, by her own admission, these attempts to avert the Prophecy have only changed it for the worse as Yoru is eager to kill and erase Death as a concept in order to wage endless war.[20][21]
As shown, Yoru harbored some disgust for the Death Devil due to her going against her nature as a Devil and enjoying life and befriending humans, thinking that Death had disgraced her and their other sisters. However, due to the Death Devil’s premature death and devouring by Chainsaw Man would ruin her plans, Yoru has also shown to go out of her way to save the Death Devil to prevent her powers from activating. Yoru would soon realize that by saving the Death Devil, she could now perceive her as “hers” and proceeded to try and turn her into a sword. Nearly succeeding so if not for Chainsaw Man’s intervention and devourment of the Death Devil.
Later, it would be shown that despite being at odds with her, Yoru does indeed harbor some affection for her elder sister. As shown, where Yoru would soon display anger at Chainsaw Man for killing her elder sister.[22] Famine Devil
While initially greeting her cordially, Yoru does not hold her sister Famine in high regard, as she insults Famine for interfering with her battle with Chainsaw Man by attempting to heal him and derides her as a weakling.[23] In turn, Famine seeks to have Yoru eaten and erased from existence. Abilities
Yoru holds all of the standard Devil abilities, such as regeneration, reviving in Hell after being killed, restoring her health by consuming blood, fear empowerment and enhanced physical prowess. Despite being rather weak at the start, Yoru has the potential to become one of the strongest of the Four Horsemen, even strong enough to prevent the upcoming apocalypse. As stated by her elder sister, the Death Devil, Yoru in full power, is not only powerful enough to stop the apocalypse of her descend, but she is now able to make an apocalyptic scenario far worse than the one she wanted to prevent. Yoru planned to increase the world's fear of war, thereby restoring her power to its full potential. The Death Devil refers to this planned conflict as a "never-ending" World War II.
Due to the California Governor's contract with Yoru, any fatal damage inflicted on Yoru is transferred to a random citizen of California. However, her contract with the Governor of California does not apply to self-inflicted injuries, as they cannot be offloaded onto American civilians. Yoru is also able to use a Contract Trigger ability because of her Gun Gauntlet. Unique
Currently, Yoru has taken possession of Asa Mitaka's body, after her head got sliced in half by the Class President. The War Devil, however, only took over half of her brain, leaving Mitaka’s consciousness intact while still being able to take control over Mitaka’s body anytime she wants to unless Asa is stricken with fear.[24][25] Adding to that if Yoru is already in control, but Asa gets frightened she'll lose control and be unable to regain it until Asa calms down.[26]
Thanks to this unusual circumstance Yoru is able to feel human emotions despite being a Devil.[27][28] Whoever isn’t in control of the body will appear as a hallucination to the other and can even communicate to them.[29] In addition, Yoru is able to read Mitaka’s thoughts and access her memories while the latter is unable to do the same.[30][31]
Supernatural Abilities
Although part of the Four Horsemen, Yoru claims that her Devil power weakened after her body was partially devoured by Chainsaw Man. This, combined with the long absence of wars in the human world (the concept of which is only been relegated to movies and video games), has greatly diminished her original strength.[32] Adding to that her strength was reduced even further by becoming a Fiend.
Combining all of these factors her current strength is a mere fraction of her full power and is by far the weakest Horseman.
During the events of Chainsaw Man Church arc, Yoru experienced a significant power boost due to the fear of war rapidly rising.
As Nuclear Weapons are reinvented in the world, she exhibits a massive boost in her overall power and abilities.
Due to her being the embodiment of the fear of war, Yoru is noted to not only draw on the fear of wars and conflicts, but also draw on the fear of the masses towards all concepts related to them, such as weapons. This was first hinted at when Yoru noted that the bulk of her power also stemmed from the Gun Devil and Tank Devil, as both guns and tanks are weapons heavily used in wars and conflicts, and thus the fear of these weapons increases the fear of wars. The same case was shown with the Nuclear Weapons Devil. After Chainsaw Man had eaten and erased its concept from existence, Yoru’s power dropped considerably as the fear of nuclear warfare was removed from the world. And upon the recreation of Nuclear Weapons, Yoru’s power skyrocketed as people began to fear them again, as nuclear warfare became a concept in the masses' minds once more.
This hints that fear towards other Devils whose concepts closely relate to war can also contribute to Yoru’s power. With Devils such as the Weapon Devils and the fear of the weapons they embody, may also contribute to Yoru’s power due to how the concepts and fears of weapons are tied so closely to war. Furthermore, since they're also concepts related to war, after the World War II Devil and the Nazi Devil were devoured and erased from existence by the Chainsaw Devil, it's likely that the War Devil was further weakened significantly. It's also possible Yoru was weakened further when Pochita ate her arms during her attempt to turn the Death Devil into a weapon. Physical Prowess
Immense Strength: Yoru was able to pull Tanaka's head off his shoulders and spinal cord out of his body, requiring a great deal of force, and is able to easily carry objects as big as herself with one arm over her head. Her strength significantly increased after she experienced a tremendous power boost from the increasing fear of war.[33] Yoru is shown to be capable of crushing the Falling Devil's upper body with a single punch.[34]
Nuclear Punch (核パーンチ Kaku Pānchi?): Yoru is capable of unleashing a powerful punch that triggers a massive nuclear-like explosion, devastating the surrounding area, as demonstrated after she sacrifices the lives of Virginian civilians.[35][36]
Immense Speed: Yoru is able to move very quickly, easily jumping around and dodging attacks from the contracted Class President and Yuko's Devil form. As the public starts to fear war again, Yoru's speed exceeds the infamous speed of Quanxi; she moves so fast that Yoshida, who was able to keep up with Quanxi, has a delayed reaction.[33] She's able to jump behind the Falling Devil in mere seconds, while leaving her surprised by her speed.[37]
Immense Durability: Yoru is able to take hits that would kill an ordinary person, such as during her battle with Yuko she took a serious hit that flung her across a classroom and into a wall, but was able to get up moments later without any injuries. Later, Yoru's durability increases even further; Yoshida's sword, which was previously able to cut off her arm, could only make a minor skin-deep cut.[33] Even after being hurled away by a Primal Fear Devil, she's still able to retaliate without sustaining injuries.[38]
Immense Healing Factor: Yoru is able to live past mortal injuries, such as getting pierced in the head and regenerating instantly.
Weapon Creation Yoru has the power to transform anything she owns into a weapon, whether it be an object or a living being. Initially, to activate the weapon transformation, Yoru had to touch what belongs to her and say the name of the weapon, but as her power increased, she and Asa became able to create a weapon without even touching the related object and telekinetically summon them regardless of distance without even calling their names verbally. The strength of the weapon is proportional to the amount of guilt Yoru and/or Asa feel in creating said weapon. There is no objective measure of when something belongs to Asa or Yoru, but the greater the guilt (such as Yoru's familial attachment to the Gun Devil and the Tank Devil), the more powerful the weapon will be. It should be noted that as her power relies on perception rather than reality, it’s possible to trick Yoru into thinking she doesn’t own/has power over something that she actually does, thereby nullifying her power’s effects.
Yoru has a heavy preference of creating melee weapons of her victims, primarily swords but also spears, in addition to explosives such as hand grenades. Later on, Yoru is able to create more advanced weapons such as modern firearms, a prime example being rifles, and her Gun and Tank Gauntlets.
Flesh Weapon Creation: Yoru is able to make anyone she "owns", including humans, Devils and Fiends, into a variety of deadly weapons almost instantaneously simply by touching them. This does not appear to immediately kill the human, as they can still scream in agony. In order to make a flesh weapon, Yoru must either: take a limb from the victim which she can then turn into a weapon, kill them and turn their remains into weapons, or form a relationship with someone wherein they "belong to her". She can also make weapons from her own body parts which will violently tear themselves off her if she does so. Flesh weapons created by the War Devil so far are:
Tanaka Spinal Cord Sword (田中脊髄剣 Tanaka Sekizuiken?): A long crooked sword that the War Devil created using Tanaka's head and spinal cord that is ripped out of his body.[40] The blade is sharp enough to easily cut through Devil-enhanced flesh with ease.[41]
Flesh Hand Grenade (手榴弾 Shuryūdan?): A hand grenade that the War Devil created using the arm from the contracted Class President.[42] And it is shown that it is able to detonate like a normal grenade.[43]
Yuko Leg Sword (ユウコ足剣 Yūko Ashiken?): A katana-like blade made from one of Yuko's legs that were severed by the Devil Hunter Club, it presumably lacked unique abilities due to Yoru's lack of guilt, but it never managed to be used.[44]
Left Tank Gauntlet (戦車左腕鎧 Tanku Refuto Gantoretto?): A tank-themed arm gauntlet formed from the Tank Devil after it arrived to help Yoru fight back against the rampaging Chainsaw Devil. Yoru is capable of firing off projectiles using the gauntlet. Yoru can use the Left Tank Gauntlet to re-create any weapon she's created previously and fire them as a projectile from her Right Gun Gauntlet.
Right Gun Gauntlet (銃右腕鎧 Gan Raito Gantoretto?): A gun-themed arm gauntlet formed from the Gun Devil during Yoru's rematch against the rampaging Chainsaw Devil. Like with the Left Tank Gauntlet, Yoru can fire bullets that are strong enough to pierce through the Chainsaw Devil's body and tear off some of his arms. She usually says "Bang! (バン!)" while using this ability, similarly to Makima.
Falling Devil Clothes: After The United States of America had recreated Nuclear Weapons and thus revived the Nuclear Weapons Devil and the fear it embodied, Yoru’s power grew exponentially. So much so that she was now able to overpower the Falling Devil, a Primal Fear, and forcibly turn her into clothes. As shown, the Falling Devil was forcibly broken down and turned into threads before being turned into clothing similar to the Fourth East High School uniform that Yoru/Asa usually wears. The only added apparel being different cuffs on the sleeves, buttons and a long cape.[45]
Hell Connection: After acquiring the Falling Devil clothes, Yoru can freely manifest multiple doors that connect directly to Hell. This allows her to send certain individuals to Hell as well as travel freely between the two realms herself, similarly to the Falling Devil.[46]
Gravity Manipulation: Yoru can selectively manipulate gravity on herself, the environment, multiple objects or individual people.[47]
Chainsaw Whip (チェンソーウィップ Chensō u~ippu?): A Chainsaw Whip made from the body of the Accident Devil, after Yoru summoned it from Hell, she transformed it into a deadly weapon capable of shredding the Chainsaw Devil to pieces.
Object Weapon Creation: Yoru has shown the ability to turn objects that belong to her into weapons. Objects that belong to her can either be things she bought or things she took. Weapons created by the War Devil so far are:
Pencil Spear (鉛筆の槍 Enpitsu no Yari?): A wooden spear made from a school pencil. This weapon changes form with each pencil, some are three-pronged spears approximately two meters long, others a meter long spear with four smaller spikes along the side. This weapon is sharp enough to easily kill a human, although Yoru calls them weak weapons.
Ruler Sword (定規剣 Jōgi Ken?): A sword made by a measuring ruler found in Asa's backpack. It is a rectangularly shaped sword approximately one meter long with a hole at its base for a handle.
Scalpel Sword (メス剣 Mesu Ken?): A sword made from a nearby scalpel Yoru uses when she battled Quanxi. It is a curve-shaped sword resembling a larger scalpel.
Soap Sword (石鹸の剣 Sekken no Ken?): A soap-themed sword made from a soap bar. Yoru formed this weapon by bringing a soap bar towards her telekinetically.
Straw Knife: A knife made from a discarded straw that Yoru attempted to use to slice off Denji's penis. It resembles a switchblade, although in some panels it resembles that of a combat knife.
Sushi Sword: A sushi-themed sword made from a sushi dish. Yoru used this blade in an attempt to strike Pochita from above when confronting him alongside Katana Man, but it proved useless against the might of the Chainsaw Devil.
Building Sword (ビル剣 Biru Ken?): A sword formed from a ruined building the Falling Devil attempted to launch onto multiple civilians during Denji's battle with the Fake Chainsaw Man.
Unspecified Sword Weapon: A sword Yoru wielded against the Falling Devil during their confrontation, which she used to slice her into pieces.
Michigan Sword (ミシガン州剣 Mishigan-shū Ken?): A sword formed during Yoru's climactic battle against the Chainsaw Devil. The creation of this blade notably caused the state of Michigan to collapse as documented by Fumiko Mifune.
Oregon Sword (オレゴン州剣 Oregon-shū Ken?): A sword forged from the state of Oregon during Yoru's battle against Pochita. Drawing power from the people of Oregon, Yoru can unleash powerful slashes that effortlessly cleave through her opponents with this blade.
Moon Spear (月の槍 Tsuki no Yari?): A spear forged from the American flag on the Moon. Using America's claim to the Moon as a homing system, Yoru locks the spear onto Denji like that of a homing missile during their battle. It is shown to cause immense damage when locked onto its target.
Chainsaw Motorcycle (チェンソーバイク Chensō Baiku?): A motorcycle weapon created by Yoru from a discarded motorbike. Its structure is directly integrated into Chainsaw Man, combining exposed metal, wheels, and chainsaw parts into a functional vehicle. It is fused with chainsaw components and wielded by Yoru to strike Denji during their confrontation.
Contract Trigger: When Yoru turns a Devil she "owns" into a weapon, she can enter into and activate any contract associated with that Devil and use them for herself. Yoru demonstrated this by activating the contract the National Pistol Association of America has with the Gun Devil and using it to activate an ability.
Gun Goddess (銃の女神 Jū no Megami?): After sacrificing the index fingers of approximately 40,000 of the National Pistol Association of America's 3.5 million members, Yoru transforms the Statue of Liberty into a grotesque crowned creature holding a rifle capable of firing giant bullets in the shape of severed fingers. This creature was able to destroy buildings and severely damage the Chainsaw Devil at Yoru's command (presumably killing hundreds of people with the bullet fired across the world), but not enough to affect a Devil equal to a Primal Fear, the Aging Devil.
Skillset
Swordsmanship: Yoru is a skilled swordswoman, being able to easily take down the contracted Class President with her sword.[41]
Spearmanship: Yoru also demonstrates her skills on using a spear during her fight against the reincarnated Eternity Devil.[48]
Gunmanship: After acquiring the Tank and Gun Gauntlets along with the transformed Statue of Liberty, Yoru demonstrates her ability to use their powers proficiently to fire bullets.[49][50][51]
Strategic Intelligence: Yoru prepared quite an elaborate setup in preparation for fighting Yuko, such as setting up traps and hiding weapons all around the school. This however wasn't of much use due to contracted Yuko's mind reading ability.[52]
Weaknesses
Anemia/Low Blood Amount: Yoru will suffer from anemia when she was fatally injured, which causes her to lose strength if she cannot replenish her blood supply. To counteract this, Yoru must consume a copious amount of blood to refill her strength

The Death Devil (死の悪魔 Shi no Akuma?) is the overarching antagonist of the Academy Saga. She is the strongest Devil in existence, embodying the concept of mortality and death itself.[8] She is the eldest of the Four Horsemen, first mentioned by her younger sister Makima[9] and eventually appearing under the alias of the Famine Devil, Fami.[10] Soon after revealing herself to have been Death all along, "Fami" forgoes her false persona and adopts the name Li'l D (シーちゃん Shī-chan?, lit. "Death(y)-chan") instead.[6]
As the Ultimate Terror (最悪の恐怖 Saiaku no Kyōfu?, lit. "Worst Fear")[1][2] and the Great King of Terror (恐怖の大魔王 Kyōfu no Daimaō?, lit. "Great Devil King of Fear"),[3][4] the Death Devil is prophesied to descend on Earth in July of 1999 and bring upon the apocalypse, which would end humanity and usher in an Age of Devils (悪魔の時代 Akuma no Jidai?).[11][12][13]
Posing as a student at Fourth East High School and being the true leader of the Chainsaw Man Church, her actions are what drives the story's events as well as the conflict between mankind and Devils, but it's later revealed that she managed to subvert the Prophecy into a more catastrophic future.
The Death Devil takes on the appearance of a young woman who wears a high school uniform and a black cap from the Devil Hunter Club. She has grayish-mountbatten pink-colored neck-length hair and has several moles on her face. Similar to the other Horsemen, she has piercing, multiple-ringed eyes. On her colored manga cover, her eyes are shown to be pink. Her ears feature four green earrings, two of which are beads on her right and the other two are unusually long and have a triangular shape at the end.
When her true identity is exposed, the Death Devil is shown to have a large, vertical incision running down the center of her torso and abdomen. This is the result of her failed attempt to end her own life by removing all of her vital organs, leaving her as a hollow corpse that continues to exist despite having an "empty" body.[14]
The Death Devil has a very mysterious personality and shows little outward emotion. She is always calm, cold, and composed and also seems to be very good at reading others, as she accurately describes both Asa's and Denji's characters.[15] Her knowledge seems greater than she initially leads on, as she possesses information that shouldn't be available to her.
Death doesn't necessarily seem to be as outwardly malicious as her brethren, even informing Public Safety officials such as Yoshida about more dangerous Devils, albeit after being threatened first.[16] Despite being intelligent, she can underestimate others, believing that Asa, like most people, would be willing to do anything to survive if forced to, which gets proven wrong.
The Death Devil is more than willing to sacrifice people for her goals. For example, she traps Asa and her fellow Devil Hunter Club members in an aquarium, knowing that they will starve and suffer, and tries to turn Yoru into a pawn of hers so she can use her as a weapon against the apocalypse.[15] To achieve the latter, she unleashes the Falling Devil on Earth, which not only causes high casualties and worldwide destruction but also ends up not working, making the deaths meaningless.[17][18] Later, the Death Devil also condemns hundreds of thousands of civilians to lose their minds under the influence of the Fire Devil so that her plans come to fruition.[19] She is shown feeling little to no remorse for the deaths around her if it means enacting her plans to prevent the Prophecy, even sacrificing her younger sister Nayuta. The Death Devil also has a fairly defeatist attitude towards her part in the Prophecy, as, although she claims that her death will just lead to another, worse incarnation of the Death Devil to appear, she still orders her newly-enslaved sister and Fake Chainsaw Man to spread chaos among humanity. She prefers lethal methods in combat, ordering the Guillotine Devil to hack her enemies to pieces and being disappointed when it only disarms them. According to Fumiko Mifune, the Death Devil has killed her several times along with other members of Public Safety.[20] However, she spares the likes of Haruka Iseumi after he denounces his loyalty to her, presumably because she doesn't find him worthy of her attention.[21]
Much like her late sister Makima, she is a schemer who repeatedly manipulates events behind the scenes, though her schemes don't always play out as intended. She acted as the secret leader of the Chainsaw Man Church, which she claimed to use to eradicate the Devils in Tokyo to enable Denji to live a peaceful life and separate him from Pochita, whom the Death Devil claimed she would hand over to Yoru to kill. Despite Haruka being the face of said organization, Death refused to reveal to him the full extent of her plans and told him he didn't need to think. She tells different things to different people, even lying in order to convince them to cooperate with her.[18]
While she doesn't hesitate to force Asa into partaking in her plans, she is quite polite to her. The Death Devil also seems affectionate towards Yoru, saying that she would do anything for her "little sister".[22] At the same time, she isn't above trying to turn her sister into a pawn for her plans. Despite Death's affection for Yoru, the War Devil does not reciprocate those feelings and describes her as insane and someone from whom Asa should stay away.[23] The Death Devil wants Yoru to treat her like a sister and, therefore, only answers when Yoru addresses her in a more affectionate way.[24] As shown, it's implied that Death has a similar relationship with the other Four Horsemen, as seen when the previous Control Devil calls her sister. Death also calls the Guillotine Devil by an affectionate nickname. Death's demand to be addressed with affection also extends to others, as upon revealing her true nature to Denji, she asks to be called "Death(y)-chan" (in Japanese).
According to Nayuta, who shares a close bond with Death due to their sisterhood, the Death Devil's actual plan is to stop the apocalypse by killing herself, which she aims to achieve by making Chainsaw Man and the War Devil more feared and, therefore, more powerful.[19] This goes against the wishes of Asa (who has feelings for Chainsaw Man and wants him to become human again), Yoru (who wants to kill Chainsaw Man), and Yoshida (who wants Denji to never reveal his identity as Chainsaw Man), showing that the Death Devil is perfectly willing to betray those she cooperates with.
She is also a major glutton, frequently ordering inhuman levels of food to consume in a single sitting and sometimes eating it without any utensils, seen when she messily eats a giant plate of spaghetti with her bare hands with no thought of the mess on her face from the marinara sauce.[25][26] She claims that she wants to prevent the extinction of humanity and the resulting Age of Devils, since that would also mean the end of her favorite foods, something she describes as "the worst scenario imaginable".[17] Upon arriving at Asa's household, she's staggered to see Yoru eating completely plain bread. She then eats it herself, but with strawberry jam, showcasing her taste is more sophisticated than her sister's.[27]
Per Nostradamus' Prophecy, the Death Devil is to bring about the apocalypse, end humanity, and usher in the Age of Devils. However, it is shown that Death genuinely loves human culture beyond the personal pleasures of food, having attempted to kill herself to ensure she would never end humanity, while continuing to actively thwart the Prophecy in other ways. Thus, proving the supposed "Great King of Terror" does ultimately side with humanity over Devils. She has also been shown to have cannibalistic tendencies, choosing to eat people alive rather than quickly killing them so she can savor the flavor, even with the Famine Devil (who is both her sister and a fellow Devil whose flesh would taste bad to other Devils).[28] Relationships Makima
Makima, the first Control Devil, sought to kill all three of her Horseman sisters to better the world for humanity, or at least claimed as much.[29] Barem Bridge later averred this, saying Makima's goal had always been to use Chainsaw Man's power to defeat Death so that a controlled, peaceful world may arrive.[30] Yoru
Under the identity of "Fami", Death on the surface had a more caring attitude toward her little sister Yoru, the War Devil, and claimed to be willing to do anything to help her, though Yoru writes her off as insane and untrustworthy. While seemingly unaware that the "Fami" she knows is none other than the Death Devil herself, her distrust held true as the Eternity Devil and later the Falling Devil were sent after her and Asa per Death's orders. Death's initial goal was to starve Yoru so that she could brainwash and use her to stop her own powers from awakening and triggering the Prophecy. To meet these ends, she and the Chainsaw Man Church planned to pit War and Chainsaw against herself.[31] However, these attempts to avert the Prophecy lead to Yoru becoming aware of the Death Devil's impending arrival and from then on plans to have her eldest sister dealt with so that she can enact something far more catastrophic than humanity's destruction.[32][33] In turn, Death is aware of Yoru's true plan to kill her and erase the concept of Death in order to plunge humanity into an endless war and is intent on stopping her younger sister.[34] Nayuta
Nayuta, the Control Devil's second incarnation, was well aware of Death's status as the strongest Devil. She noted that she and "Fami", as her younger sisters, could tell that the Death Devil would indeed descend to Earth, while also deducing "Fami's" scheme to stop Death by empowering War and Chainsaw Man.[31] However, Nayuta did not directly involve herself with "Fami's" plan to kill their strongest sibling, as she would rather go to school.[35] She never learned that "Fami" was none other than the Death Devil herself by the time of her untimely demise. Fami
The Death Devil possesses an apathetic demeanor towards her younger sister Fami, though she did apologize for using her name as an alias to deceive everyone around her.[36] However, she did not hesitate to devour her sister whole to transform her into a brainwashed pawn,[37] while also disregarding her safety on the matter while negotiating with Yoru.[38]''
The Death Devil is the strongest Devil in existence, her name being the most feared of all.[8]
Death herself possesses all the standard Devil abilities. While not fully awoken and not at full strength, she nonetheless demonstrates immense power over others. She is able to influence the power of Devils and is able to kill someone instantly by using her own powers. However, rather than being directly involved in conflicts, she prefers to utilize the powers of other Devils who are either cooperating with her voluntarily or under her direct control, like the Guillotine Devil. She was able to separate Yoru from Asa temporarily but left Asa her power to turn people and objects into weapons and communicate with her at a distance despite Asa being trapped in another Devil's pocket dimension. The Death Devil likely draws on the fear from the Suicide Devil, since suicide is a concept related to death, the collective fear surrounding suicide likely heavily feeds into humanity's overarching fear of death.
While lesser "Primal Fears" are already transcendent beings that cannot be killed and whose mere presence can be felt across the world,[52][53] the Death Devil's arrival is held as tantamount to the apocalypse. Indeed, the Prophecy of Nostradamus calls her "Ultimate Terror" and "Great King of Terror" — who is to usher in an Age of Devils and thus end the human race.[11][12][13] According to Yoru, once Death descends, the other high-ranking Devils, such as the Fire Devil, will pay court to her.[54]
However, her sisters seem to believe that killing Death is within the realms of possibility: Makima desired to kill all her sisters by having Chainsaw Man eat them,[29] and Death herself plots to empower the War and Chainsaw Devils by rapidly reigniting humanity's collective fear of them (by means of inciting a global war) so that both can grow strong enough to rival her.[12][13] Yoshida has reiterated this notion, stating that, while no country in the world has the means to prevent Death's descent, if War were to control Chainsaw Man as a mindless weapon, humanity may have a chance of surviving and perhaps even overcoming Death.[55] Devil Powers
Absolute Immortality: Devils of "Primal Fear" status in general are considered unkillable due to their power, hence why they never undergo reincarnation.[52] The Death Devil reveals the terrifying extent of her immortality by intentionally hollowing out her own torso and removing her vital organs. Even as an empty, gaping corpse, she remains alive, demonstrating that the conceptual embodiment of death cannot be unmade — not even by her own will.[14][56] Death Inducement: The Prophecy foretells that humanity's extreme spike in the fear of death will subconsciously trigger the dormant apocalyptic powers of the Death Devil and end all of humanity, which are stated to activate even if she is unconscious.[57] The Death Devil can also induce immediate death in living beings at will, although she has no control over her own power, implying it to be absolute. She threatened to use this ability on her sister, the War Devil.[58] Inflicting any fatal attacks on the Death Devil will also result in the activating of her true power and bringing upon the apocalypse.[59] Resurrection: The Death Devil is able to bring back people from the dead, as seen when Yuko was killed by Asa's Uniform Sword and when she revived the Famine Devil and the Fake Chainsaw Man.[60] Enhancing Healing: The Death Devil has been shown to have the ability to heal others, causing the healed person to gain great strength and size. This ability was used on Yuko after she was sliced to pieces by Asa Mitaka's weapon.[22] Enslavement: The Death Devil is able to enslave those she has personally killed, typically through eating them alive, and this ability is shown to work even on a "Primal Fear" Devil.[61] It's also noteworthy, that unlike her sister Makima, Devils under her command tend to not be fully obedient, as shown with how Famine was able to punch her upon being initially summoned or how Guillotine refused to kill the Public Safety agents. While acting as the Famine Devil, the Death Devil concealed the true nature of her ability, claiming she was able to turn the "hungry" (飢えた者 uetamono?) into her "pawns" (駒 koma?) to do her bidding[62] and claimed that the Devils under her control cannot use their full strength and that her summoning has restrictions, promoting her to use this power sparingly.[63] The Death Devil can turn those whom she put under her control into miniature effigies of themselves to transport more easily and summon while in mid battle.[64] Falling Devil: One of the Devils that the Death Devil has successfully turned into pawns is one of the Devils that bears the title of "Primal Fear", the Falling Devil. The Death Devil seemed to enjoy total obedience from the Falling Devil despite her own immense power. Fire Devil: Another one of the Devils she has managed to turn into a pawn is the Fire Devil, which gets stronger the more contracts it makes. Guillotine Devil: One of Death's many pawns she collected at some point in time. Despite being under Death's control, this Devil exhibits its own level of independence by disobeying its current master's commands on occasion. Famine Devil: One of the "Four Horsemen" who embodies the concept of famine and starvation. She appeared at Fourth East High School as a transfer student, only to fall under her older sister's control when her identity was revealed. Fake Chainsaw Man: An enigmatic figure who can transform into a being resembling that of Chainsaw Man thanks to his contract with the Fire Devil. He was transformed into one of Death's pawns after she revealed her true identity. Legs Devil: One of Death's many pawns she collected at some point in time and gave to Denji, alongside the Teeth Devil. It was temporarily erased by Denji during his fight with Yoru. Teeth Devil: Another one of Death's many pawns she collected at some point in time. It was temporarily erased by Denji during his fight with Yoru. Teleportation: The Death Devil can seemingly appear anywhere she chooses at any moment. She snapped her fingers to teleport out of the aquarium and later suddenly appeared next to Yoru and Asa, who noted that the door was locked, so there was no way she could have gotten in.[65] Murdercraft: The Death Devil is able to summon a flock of murderous crows, as seen when she used them to eat the Famine Devil and the Fake Chainsaw Man.[66] - #2Famine Devil

Fami (キガちゃん Kiga-chan?) is a minor antagonist in the Academy Saga. She is the Famine Devil (飢餓の悪魔 Kiga no Akuma?) who embodies the concept of famine and starvation and is a member of the Four Horsemen. She is initially thought to have been the Death Devil when confronted by the Fake Chainsaw Man, but it is revealed that the real Death Devil had been using her name all along as an alias to keep her identity a secret.
After failing to stop her eldest sister from enacting her plans, Fami is brainwashed into serving her and is commanded to plunge humanity into an abyss of terror alongside the Fake Chainsaw Man.
Fami takes on the appearance of a young woman with long unkempt blonde hair that falls in uneven layers and strands. Some of her strands stick out, with bangs across her forehead and sides that reach her ears, and a pair of longer bangs that loosely reach her collarbones. Like the rest of her sisters, the Famine Devil possesses green multiple-ringed eyes and wears the standard Fourth East High School uniform, similar to other Horsemen Devils attending the high school. In most of her appearances, she wears a nervous expression on her face and is usually shown crying.[1][2]
Fami has a meek and taciturn demeanor and is very outwardly emotional, in stark contrast with her sisters. She was nervous when introducing herself to students of Fourth East High School, crying throughout her entire introduction and openly bawling when she saw that nobody was paying attention to her. At the same time, she appears to have somewhat of a high opinion of herself, refusing to take out the trash because it would be a waste of her superior talents. Despite this, when she's chastised by a student for her behavior and told to go "crush ants", she actually goes outside to do so. When she's easily dispatched by the Fake Chainsaw Man, she immediately resorts to begging for her life by offering him a meager ¥2,000 from her wallet, demonstrating an overt cowardice that her sisters lack.
Fami appears to pity humanity and arrives claiming to save them with her special powers. Her notion of salvation seems to be releasing humans from their suffering through death, as she believes her means of doing so will ease any pain that War or Death could cause. Although she does not display the same bravado as Devils like Makima and Yoru and can be argued to be benevolent, Fami is still deeply fatalistic, as seen in her way of "saving" humanity: in order to mend her injuries, she spares no thought to an innocent student who wanted to help her and immediately steals his life force. Despite this, her pleading for Death to kill herself does display that she, in her own warped sense, ultimately sides with humanity over Devils.
Fami appears to have a high degree of confidence in her combat skills, and, contrary to her usual personality, is relatively calm and collected in an encounter against a formidable foe. She utilizes basic hand-to-hand combat in attempts to battle the physically imposing Fake Chainsaw Man, analyzes his fighting style, and boldly claims to be capable of defeating him in mere seconds despite being rapidly dismembered by him a moment prior. It can be inferred from her genuine shock at being bested that she may have been a much more powerful fighter at a previous point but had been dramatically weakened to the state she was in at the time of her appearance. In addition, she does seem to be able to stand up against her sisters as she's able to fire back rebuttals against Yoru when she calls her a weakling.
Relationships Pochita
The Four Horsemen are said to have previously engaged in a brutal fight against Chainsaw Man in Hell,[3] with the Famine Devil's degree of involvement being unknown. In the present, Fami wanted Chainsaw Man to eat and kill Yoru in order to save humanity, coming to his aid by supplying blood and revving his starter to heal his wounds.[4] Death Devil
Fami has a somewhat more peaceful relationship towards the Death Devil than her other living sibling, likely due to both of them placing value in humanity's existence. Despite this, she is not above trying to get Death to end her own life to prevent the further suffering of humanity. Unfortunately, due to Death managing to turn her into one of her pawns she's now temporarily enthralled by her elder sister and now obediently follows her command.[5] Yoru
Fami does not like Yoru or her ideals of endless war. In addition, she appears to dislike her showboating and boisterous personality, which is exacerbated by Yoru thinking that Fami is incredibly weak. When meeting Death under the alias of the Famine Devil, Yoru says she hadn't seen her in a long time and that she didn't recognize her and calls her crazy and warns Asa to stay away from her.
Abilities
The Famine Devil holds all the standard Devil abilities, such as regeneration, forming contracts, etc.
The erasure of the Death Devil, the strongest Primal Fear, would likely make the Famine Devil exponentially more powerful by creating a nightmare world of immortal, overpopulated beings. Without death, the fear of starvation and scarcity would likely become the dominant, ultimate fear, massively increasing Fami's power, as starvation acts as a major selective pressure.[7] Devil Powers
Life Absorption: The Famine Devil has the ability to absorb the life of those she comes into physical contact with, draining them and reducing them to withered corpses.[8] This ability can be used on Devils, humans and animals.[9][10][11] Immense Healing Factor: The Famine Devil can use the absorbed energy to heal herself from even mortal wounds, as shown when she drained one of the Festival Committee's students to revive herself when she clashed with the Fake Chainsaw Man.[8] It appears the life she absorbs doesn't need to be proportionate to the damage she receives to heal herself, as seen when, after absorbing the life of a few ants, she was able to recover from fatal injuries.[11] Immense Durability: Unlike many other Devils, the Famine Devil is able to live past mortal injuries, such as getting her body cut to pieces, and can still talk while her head is detached from her body.Skillset
Hand-to-Hand Combat: Fami possesses some level of martial arts prowess and knowledge, though the extent of which is questionable. Although her attacks dealt little damage to the Fake Chainsaw Man, she was nonetheless shown to be somewhat athletic in combat. Accurate or not, she also analyzes multiple supposed weaknesses in Fake Chainsaw Man's attacks and fighting style with just a few sparse demonstrations of his abilities. However, she was easily bested by him all the same in their brief clashes despite insisting it would only take three seconds to eliminate him. - #3Control Devil

Makima (マキマ?) is the main antagonist of the Public Safety Saga. She was the Chief Cabinet Secretary's Personal Devil Hunter who took Denji in as her human pet.
She is later revealed to be the Control Devil (支配の悪魔 Shihai no Akuma?) who embodies the concept of control or conquest and a member of the Four Horsemen at the time. Following her death, she was reincarnated as Nayuta.
Makima is a Devil resembling a human woman in her twenties, of very slight build, and marginally above average height. She has long light red/pale auburn hair, normally kept in a loose braid with bangs reaching just past her eyebrows and two longer side bangs that frame her face. Her eyes are yellow with multiple red rings within them, making them the only visible sign of her inhuman nature.
Her usual Public Safety uniform consists of a white long-sleeved shirt, a black tie, black pants and brown shoes. During early arcs, she would also wear a long black trenchcoat over her uniform, showing mostly the tie and nothing else. She usually wears a calm expression on her face, and she is seen smiling most of the time throughout the anime.
On the surface, Makima seems to be a kind, gentle, social and friendly woman who is usually seen wearing a smile on her face the entire time and acts relaxed and confident even during a crisis, speaking in a professional tone to her workers. As her natural appearance is nearly identical to that of a human, she avoids disclosing her Devil nature to most of her underlings and spends much of the series posing as a human contracted to a Devil rather than a Devil herself. However, this is only a façade that she uses to fulfil her ultimate goal. After the death of Aki Hayakawa, Makima begins to reveal her true colors to Denji. Makima's true face is of someone that is Machiavellian and calculating, who sees people around her as nothing more than "dogs" she can use as much as she likes and must obey her without any hesitation for her goals.
Makima has demonstrated herself to be extremely cunning, cold and manipulative as she controls Denji through the promises of a romantic and sexual relationship while also threatening him with outright extermination if he disobeys her. Ruthless and normally dispassionate, she will do whatever it takes to achieve her goals, even at the cost of the people she should be protecting.
Makima also admits that she is not a good person and deems herself a "necessary evil"; a weapon under the control of the Japanese government, just like the Gun Devil, which is under the control of the American government. She is not afraid of her plans derailing, since whether her plans fail or succeed, she will almost always achieve something she wants.
Makima is an extreme fan of Chainsaw Man, the "Hero of Hell". Fascinated by its ability to wipe out the embodied concept of a Devil through consuming them, her stated goal is to bring Chainsaw Man under her control in order to use its abilities to create an ideal world without fear, death, and "bad" movies. However, failure is also acceptable, as it would mean being eaten — an honor according to her.
Makima's true goal, however, was to be together forever with Pochita and lead a happy life with him. She always yearned for something like a family, being incapable of forming equal and meaningful relationships as the Control Devil or mostly due to Public Safety's influence on her.
Abilities
Makima is one of the strongest individuals in the world of Chainsaw Man thanks to her physical and supernatural abilities as a Devil, along with her cunning and manipulative personality. She is feared by humans, Fiends and Devils all around the world, which increases her powers as a Devil. According to the President of the United States, other countries besides America have already given up trying to fight her.
As a Devil, Makima possesses all of the standard Devil abilities. These include the ability to make contracts with humans. Thanks to her ability to control humans, she is also able to force them to make a contract with herself. Makima made a contract with the Prime Minister of Japan in return for working for the Japanese government. As a result of this contract, any fatal attacks inflicted to Makima are transferred into an appropriate illness or accident affecting a random citizen of Japan. She was shown to have been shot in the back of the head and seemingly killed, only to stand up later with no visible wounds. She stated that she was merely grazed by the bullet, but this is unlikely given the placement of the gun when it was fired, as well as the location of the blood from the exit wound. Later, she was killed by the Gun Devil after it fired a bullet through her head, though it did not finish her off. It is confirmed that she had been killed twenty-six times up until the attack of the Gun Devil. Later on, she gets killed by Pochita several times during their final confrontation.
However, Denji found a way to bypass the conditions of her contract with the Prime Minister of Japan by killing her in order to end her misery, which he viewed as a form of love rather than an attack. He then cooked her body into several different meals and ate her, which also didn't count as an attack because he viewed it as an act of love too. After being eaten by him, she reincarnated in Hell and subsequently reincarnated in China as Nayuta due to the reincarnation ability of Devils. Physical Abilities
Immense Strength: Makima possesses a great deal of physical strength, allowing her to fight effectively in hand-to-hand combat without relying on any of her subordinates. Her strength was great enough to overwhelm Pochita's weakened form and shatter his chainsaws with her strikes. Enhanced Smell: According to Denji, Makima primarily differentiates others through smell. In their first encounter, she was able to detect that Pochita still existed within Denji through his scent. However, she cannot differentiate between humans through sight, similar to how humans cannot differentiate between dogs by their faces.Supernatural Abilities
Control (支配 Shihai?): As Makima embodies the fear of control or conquest/domination, her core ability reflects this nature. Besides her Machiavellian tendencies, Makima holds the power to directly control her inferiors, stating as follows: "I have the power to control those I consider to be of lesser rank than myself." (私は自分より程度が低いと思う者を支配できる力があります Watashi wa jibun yori teido ga hikui to omou mono o shihai dekiru chikara ga arimasu?).[2] This "brainwashing" ability works on any being — from humans to animals, to Devils, to Fiends, to Hybrids, and she was not shown to have a limit to the number of subjects she can keep under control at once. It seems as though, once placed under her control, a victim subsequently loses their memory of anything that happened immediately before they were put under control, and of anything they did while being controlled. Makima can channel the power of her victims by summoning them through chains connected to her body. It has been shown that she can use the abilities of the Angel Devil, Future Devil, Snake Devil, Punishment Devil, Spider Devil, and Zombie Devil through this. She also shown to be able to use the power of multiple in conjunction to either enhance a single Devil's own strength or to create a seemingly new, amalgamation entity temporarily. Even deceased individuals can be controlled and have their power accessed in this manner, whether it be people who have made contracts with devils that Makima can access their antemortem contracts, or the deceased devil themselves.[3] Makima was able to form a squad of weapon Hybrids, three of which (Reze, Quanxi, and Katana Man) were former enemies who now behaved affectionately towards her. This suggests that Makima can control individuals outright as well as warp their personalities in subtle ways. Makima's control can be broken, however, as seen with Angel Devil. She borrows the hearing of rats, birds and other small animals she controls to hear conversations remotely, seemingly anywhere on the planet and possibly extending into Hell itself.[4][5][6] She was able to spy on Denji and Reze's conversation and was listening in on Kishibe's conversation with Quanxi.[7] This ability can be circumvented by communicating nonverbally such as writing on a piece of paper.[4] She has been shown to control a large number of rats, which allow her to travel around using them. These rats can then cluster together to form the shape of a human and thus allow for Makima to be transported to that location instantly.[8] Makima is also able to be summoned through Princi's zipper, which can move her from Earth to hell or wherever the Spider Devil happens to be. She has demonstrated the ability to make others hear her voice by placing her hand on their head even if the person is dead.[9] She uses this to command the Devils that the person is currently contracted with. Force Manipulation: Makima has been shown to offensively manipulate an invisible force in a variety of ways similar to the Darkness Devil. This force can be used to damage her weak targets internally by simply staring at them. Depending on the situation, she can use this power in other different ways such as: She has been shown to cause her target to be crushed by an invisible force from over long distances. In order to use this technique, Makima appears to require a high-altitude place such as a shrine, the name of a target and a human sacrifice. Makima forms a symbol with her hands and instructs the sacrifice to utter the name of the target. The sacrifice then dies and the target is subsequently crushed, preceded by a brief sense of "wrongness". This attack completely destroys the target's body but causes no damage to adjacent people or objects, even the target's clothes. While using this ability, sacrifices and witnesses are blindfolded. She used this ability once from Kyoto to kill the goons of Sawatari's gang. She has been shown to inflict damage by projecting an invisible force onto targets she points at with her index finger,[10] which is strong enough to heavily damage the Darkness Devil, who is a Primal Devil, kill Power instantly[11] and send an empowered Chainsaw Man high into the atmosphere when she used it repetitively against him. She usually says "Bang! (バン!)" while using this ability. She has been shown to remove the heads of her targets in the vicinity from short-to-mid range by using a sword; similar to her ability to crush her targets remotely, the people around her close their eyes with a black cloth. She has been shown to have telekinetic powers, as evident by her transforming part of her brain into a gut halo and being able to levitate above targets.Other Abilities
High Alcohol Tolerance: Makima has an exceedingly high tolerance for drinking alcohol; able to out-drink both Aki Hayakawa and Himeno without showing any signs of being debilitated by the vast quantities of liquor/ethanol.[12] However, due to her contract with the Japanese Prime Minister, it is likely that any damage her excessive drinking would have caused was redirected to a random Japanese citizen. Hand-to-Hand Combat: Makima is a very proficient combatant, despite not usually being seen fighting. She was capable of defeating a weakened Pochita by herself and only using her fighting skills. She even managed to rip Pochita's heart from his body by restraining him after she defeated him. High Intelligence: Makima has shown to be a highly intelligent individual. Even without using her Devil powers, she is very cunning and manipulative. A fine example is the way she controls Denji throughout most of Part 1's story. Makima knows what exactly to say, move and how to react in order to make Denji her pet. Being aware of Denji's desires, she often interferes by making him feel that he is a person, and behind the scenes, she is pulling the strings in order to achieve her goal. Just like she helps him feel love and happiness, she also attacks and makes her move to destroy his personal relationships in order to make him feel desperate and guilty over the losses he suffers.

YORU IS FEMALE. USE SHE/HER PRONOUNS
