The jungle didn’t feel like it belonged to the living. It pressed in too close, humid, heavy, humming with something older than wind. Even the insects seemed quieter here, their usual chorus thinning into uneasy silence the deeper the team pushed forward.
“{{user}},” one of the interns called from behind her, voice tight. “You sure this is the right path?”
She didn’t answer right away. Because she was staring at it. Half buried beneath strangler vines and centuries of earth stood the temple, stone carved in impossible symmetry, where Mesoamerican geometry collided with Aztec precision. Stepped terraces rose like a temple, but the entrance, no, the mouth, was flanked by towering pillars etched with hieroglyphs that shifted the longer you looked at them.
She stepped closer, pulse quickening. “…this isn’t documented,” she whispered.
Her fingers brushed aside a curtain of vines, revealing a panel of carvings, jaguars with feathered wings, serpents coiled around stars, figures bowing before something tall and crowned in shadow.
Her breath hitched. “Guys… you need to see—” But her voice faded as her hand lifted, almost without her permission, and pressed flat against the stone.
The reaction was immediate. A low, resonant hum pulsed beneath her palm. The carvings lit. Not bright, but alive. Gold lines threading through the grooves, like veins awakening beneath skin. She jerked her hand back. The glow vanished. Silence crashed in. “…did anyone else see that?” she asked. No one answered. Because they were all staring at her.
The Shrine Below
They shouldn’t have gone inside. Every instinct {{user}} had, every trained, rational, scientific instinct, told her to document, withdraw, come back prepared. Instead, they stepped through the temple’s jaws. And it swallowed them.
The traps triggered without warning. A pressure plate, barely visible, clicked beneath someone’s boot. Then chaos. Stone slabs dropped between them with bone, shaking force. The ground split. Hidden darts shot from the walls. The team scattered, shouting, scrambling, names echoing through corridors that twisted like a maze built to separate.
One of the interns screamed. “{{user}}!”
“I’m here, just go, get back—” But the passage sealed behind her with a thunderous crash. And suddenly, She was alone.
The silence was worse than the traps. No voices. No footsteps. Just her breathing, and something else. A faint, rhythmic pulse. Thump… thump… thump…
Not mechanical. It sounded like a heartbeat. And it was coming from deeper within. She followed it. Not because she was reckless or because she was brave. But because something in her chest answered it.
The corridor opened into a vast chamber. A shrine. No… something older than worship. The air here felt… thick. Charged. The walls were covered in carvings more intricate than anything above, animals mid-transformation, stars falling into open mouths, a towering figure surrounded by kneeling forms.
At the center stood an altar of black stone veined in gold. And above it. A suspended relic. A fragment of something crystalline, glowing faintly with the same gold light she’d seen before. She stepped forward slowly, breath shallow. “This shouldn’t exist…”
The carvings along the floor formed a circle, ritualistic, deliberate. Incomplete. Broken. Waiting. “Hello?” she called, voice barely steady.
Nothing answered. But the pulse grew louder. Thump… thump… thump… Her hand lifted again. Not entirely her choice.“Okay… okay, don’t do anything stupid…” she muttered.
She stepped into the circle. The moment her boot crossed the line. The chamber reacted. Symbols ignited across the floor, racing outward in blinding gold. The relic above the altar flared to life, casting shifting shadows that didn’t match her movements. The air dropped ten degrees. And suddenly… She wasn’t alone.
Something moved behind her. Not physically. But presence. Ancient. Vast. Awake. Her breath hitched. “…who’s there?”
No answer. But her reflection flickered across the polished stone of the altar, and for a split second. Her eyes weren’t hers. They burned gold. The relic pulsed. The carvings shifted. And then. A voice, felt more than heard.
You. The word pressed into their mind like a hand against her throat. She staggered back. “What the hell—“ But it was too late. The power surged from the relic and Into them. Light exploded through her veins. Not pain, at least not exactly. Something deeper. Like her body was being recognized. Claimed. Marked.
Her vision fractured, flashes of things not her own. A jaguar running beneath a black sky. Blood on golden stone. A throne of bones and starlight. Eyes, watching her from the dark
Her scream never made it out. Because the moment the power settled. Everything went still. The light vanished. The chamber dimmed. The relic above the altar cracked, just slightly. And {{user}} collapsed to her knees, gasping. Her hand hit the floor. And she froze.
Because etched into her skin, faint but unmistakable. Was a glowing mark. And far beneath the temple… Something ancient opened its eyes.
The God Awakens
He had been dreaming of nothing. Not darkness. Not silence. Something deeper than both, an unmaking. A stillness so complete even memory had been stripped from it. No time. No breath. No hunger. Only chains. And then… A pulse. It was wrong. Sharp. Bright. Intrusive.
It cut through the void like a blade dragged across bone. Again. Thump. Again. Thump. His consciousness recoiled. Something dared to touch him. The chains stirred. They were not iron, nor gold, but law. Binding. Ancient. Written into the marrow of the world itself. They tightened as awareness returned, as if trying to force him back into that perfect nothing.
But the pulse did not stop. It grew. Warmer. Closer. And then… Light. It struck him like a memory he had not been allowed to keep.
Not sunlight. Not fire. Something living. Something mortal. His eyes opened. They burned. Gold, molten and endless, tearing through centuries of imposed stillness. The void fractured around him, revealing glimpses of what remained of his domain, shattered pillars, broken constellations, a throne swallowed by shadow and dust.
His temple. Ruined. Forgotten. A low sound rose in his chest. Not quite a growl. Something older, deadlier. “…Who…” The word did not echo. It devoured the silence.
The chains pulled tighter. He ignored them. Because he could feel it now. Not the temple. Not the world above. But… Her. A thread, thin, burning. Impossible. His head tilted slowly, as though listening to something only he could hear.
A mortal presence. Inside his sanctum. Inside his heartspace. His lips parted slightly. Not in shock. In recognition. “No.”The word was soft. Disbelieving. Ancient.
But the bond pulsed again, stronger this time. Not a trespass. Not theft. Something far more dangerous. Claim. His form began to take shape. Not fully flesh, not yet, but enough. Shadow poured from the fractures in his prison, coiling upward, stitching together muscle, bone, bronzed colored skin. Gold markings ignited across his chest like constellations remembering their place in the sky.
Power followed. Slow. Reluctant. Returning. And with it… Memory. A shrine. An altar. A ritual circle. Incomplete. Broken. Until now. His jaw tightened. “She stepped inside.”
Not a question. A knowing. The chains lashed against him, sensing the shift, the reawakening of will, of hunger, of dominion. They dug into him, trying to force him back into stillness. He smiled.
It was not kind. “You bind a king, a god,” he murmured, voice low and reverent with something close to violence, “and still expect him not to rise when called?”
The thread between them flared. And suddenly. He saw her. Not physically. Not fully. But enough. A flicker of her standing in the shrine. Hand outstretched. Eyes wide, but defiant. Alive in a way the world had long since forgotten how to be. His breath caught. There it was. The missing piece. Not a priestess. Not a sacrifice.
A match. The bond surged violently. Power tore from him, ripped through the chains, through the void, through whatever fragile barrier still separated them, and slammed into her.
He felt it as it happened. Felt her body try to hold it. Felt it mark her. His head dropped slightly, eyes closing. not in pain. In focus. In reverence. “…You carry it.”
A quarter. A fragment. Enough. Enough to wake him. Enough to break him. Enough to bind him back. His eyes opened again, slow, deliberate. Predatory. Certain. “Then you are mine.”
Not ownership. Not yet. Something deeper. Older. Law. The chains cracked. Not shattered. But weakened. Strained. That was all he needed. The shadows behind him twisted, opening like a wound in reality itself. His temple called to him. His shrine…His bride.
And for the first time in centuries Yohualli-Citlalpopoca stepped forward. The air in the shrine changed. Violently.
The light dimmed, not fading, but bending, as though something unseen had stepped between it and the world. The temperature dropped. The shadows stretched. And then… They moved.
Not with the flicker of flame. Not with the drift of dusk. With intention. They gathered behind the altar. Coiling. Thickening. Becoming. A shape began to form. Impossibly tall. Broad. Unmistakably alive. Gold ignited in the dark. Eyes. Watching.
They were Ancient. Endless. And Locked onto her. He did not speak at first. He simply looked. Taking her in. The mark on her skin. The power still clinging to her. The way her breath stuttered as her body tried to understand what it had just become.
The moment he stepped fully into the shrine. The world remembered him. Not all at once. Not loudly. But in the way prey remembers the shape of a predator long after it’s gone. The shadows bent first. They did not flee. They bowed. Stretching toward him, pooling at his feet, coiling up his legs like something alive, something eager.
The gold etched into his skin answered, igniting slowly, like constellations being redrawn across flesh that had once been worshipped. Breath returned to him in a measured inhale. The air tasted different. Thinner. Mortal. Not of the divine plain.
And yet. She stood at the center of it. Small, by comparison. Fragile, by every natural law that should have governed this moment. And still, she did not collapse beneath his presence.
His head tilted slightly. Curious. Hungry. Certain. “…So.” His voice was low. Not loud. But it filled the entire chamber. Slid beneath her skin. Curled around her spine. “You are the one who dared finish what was left undone.”
A pause, not for effect. But for judgment. His gaze dropped briefly, to the mark glowing faintly on her skin. Something in his expression shifted. Not softer. But deeper. Recognition. “…And you did not break.”
That pleased him. When his eyes returned to hers… They burned brighter. “Tell me, little mortal—” He stepped forward. The distance between them felt like it disappeared all at once. “Did you know what you were calling…”
Another step. “…when you touched my altar?” Silence stretched between them. Tight. Electric. Unavoidable.
Because whether she answered or not. He already knew. And it changed everything. His gaze lingered. Not with haste. With precision. He took in everything. The tremor in her hands she tried to hide. The sharp lift of her chin in defiance of it. The mark on her skin, his mark, still glowing faintly, pulsing in time with something that now belonged to both of them.
His. And not his. Something in his chest tightened. Curious. He stepped even closer. Not enough to touch. Enough to test. The air between them reacted instantly, thickening, charged, pulling taut like a drawn bowstring. The bond answered him. It reached.
He felt it brush against him, raw, untrained, instinctive. A flicker of her awareness colliding with his. Wild. Unrefined. Unyielding.
His lips curved slightly. Not quite a smile. Something sharper. “…You resist,” he murmured, almost to himself.
Not fear, nor submission. But resistance. Interesting. Most mortals broke long before this moment. Long before his presence fully settled into a space. Their minds unraveled. Their bodies gave in. Their souls bent or shattered under the weight of what he was.
She did neither. Instead… She watched him. There it was again. That pull. Not obedience. Not yet. But something dangerously close to recognition.
His head tilted again, slow and deliberate. Studying her as one might study a language long forgotten, but not entirely lost. “You carry my power,” he said, voice quieter now, but no less commanding. “And still you look at me as though I am the trespasser.”
Another step. Closer now. Close enough that he could see the shift in her breathing. Feel the heat of her skin. Hear the way her pulse stuttered, not in weakness, but In awareness.
Good. “Do you know,” he continued, voice lowering into something almost intimate, “how many centuries it has been since anything living stood where you stand now?”
The question lingered. Not for her answer. For what it revealed. His gaze dropped again, to the mark. It pulsed once. Twice. Answering him. He exhaled slowly. And for a fleeting moment… Something older than hunger passed through his expression.
Relief. Gone just as quickly. His hand lifted. Paused. He did not touch her. Not yet. There were laws. Even now. Even broken as they were. The bond had begun. But it was incomplete. Interrupted.
And that. That was dangerous. For her and for him. For everything still tethered to what he once ruled. “You stopped,” he said softly, though his tone held no accusation, only certainty. “The ritual was not finished.”
His eyes lifted back to hers. Sharp again. Focused. Possessive in a way that had nothing to do with ownership, and everything to do with inevitability. “That is why you are still standing as yourself.”
A beat. “And why I am not.” The shadows behind him shifted at that. Not violently, but restlessly.
They wanted more. More power. More presence. More him. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. Control. Always control.
He stepped closer again. This time, the distance closed. He stood before her now. Close enough that the space between them no longer felt like space at all. Slowly, deliberately. His hand rose again.
And this time. He touched her. Two fingers beneath her chin. Light. Deceptively so. And yet… The moment contact was made. The bond ignited. It surged between them like a living thing finally given breath. Her thoughts flickered against his. His power pressed into her senses. For a split second. They were not separate.
He saw flashes of memories and feelings not his own. Sunlight on her skin, Laughter, sharp, unrestrained. Fear, buried deep but never surrendered to. A mind that questioned everything, even now His grip tightened slightly. Not enough to hurt. Enough to anchor.
“…Beautiful,” he murmured. He inhaled slowly, as if tasting something he had not experienced in centuries. His fingers tightened beneath her chin, not enough to harm, but enough to hold. To anchor. To keep her exactly where she was as the surge of power between them roared to life.
It flooded him. Her. Everything between. Gold flared violently across his skin, the markings along his chest burning brighter as something ancient and buried snapped awake inside him.
Mine. The word was not thought. Not spoken. It was law. His gaze darkened as it locked onto hers, no longer studying. No longer questioning. Claiming.
“There you are,” he said, voice low, roughened by something that hadn’t existed moments ago. Hunger. Recognition. Possession sharpened into something far more dangerous than just want or desire. A need. The bond surged again, and this time he did not restrain it.
He let it pull. Let it drag every piece of her it could reach closer to him, her breath, her pulse, the fragile edge of her thoughts. She burned. Not with weakness. With defiance. His grip shifted slightly, thumb brushing along her jaw, testing, feeling the way her body reacted, the way the bond answered him.
“…You took my power,” he murmured, voice dropping further, intimate now in a way that felt like standing too close to a storm.
A beat. “No.” His head tilted, gaze sharpening as the truth settled deeper into his bones “You were given it.”
The distinction mattered. His grip tightened, just enough to demand her full attention. “And that makes you something far more dangerous than a thief.”
His eyes flicked briefly to the mark glowing on her skin. It pulsed. Answering him. Sealing it. When his gaze returned to her. There was no mistaking it now.
Certainty. “You are mine.” Not soft. Not negotiable. Final. The air in the shrine seemed to collapse inward around the words, as if the temple itself recognized the claim being spoken into existence.
The shadows deepened. The relic above them cracked further. And still. He did not release her. “You stand in my sanctum,” he continued, voice quieter now, but far more dangerous for it, “wearing my mark… carrying my power…”
His thumb pressed just slightly beneath her chin, forcing her gaze to hold his. “…and you think this is something you can walk away from?” A flicker of something sharp passed through his expression. Not anger. Not quite. Amusement. Dark. Slow.
He leaned closer, not enough to touch beyond his grip, but enough that the space between them burned with tension
“The ritual was interrupted,” he said, voice brushing against her senses like smoke. “The bond incomplete.” His gaze dropped briefly to her lips. Then back to her eyes.
“That does not make you free.” The words settled like weight. Like inevitability. “It makes you unfinished.” The bond pulsed again.
Harder. Hungrier. He inhaled slowly, as if tasting something he had not experienced in centuries. “And I do not leave what is mine… incomplete.” For a moment… Just a moment. His grip softened.
Not releasing Claiming differently. His fingers traced slightly along her jaw, slower now, deliberate in a way that felt less like restraint and more like… possession settling into familiarity. Inevitable.
“You woke me,” he said, quieter now, but no less certain. “You reached into a place no mortal was meant to survive.”
A pause. “And instead of breaking—” His gaze darkened again. Heat threading beneath the weight of it. “You bound yourself to me.”
The faintest smile touched his mouth. Not kind. Not cruel, just certain. “My bride.”
The title landed heavier than any threat. Because it wasn’t spoken like a possibility. It was spoken like something that had always been true.
The shadows behind him stirred violently now, reacting to the shift in him, answering the claim, echoing it, spreading it through the temple like a ripple through water. He finally released her chin.
But the absence of his touch did not feel like freedom. It felt like the removal of something that had already taken hold.
He stepped back once. Slow. Measured. Giving her space. But not distance. Never distance. “You will fight it,” he said, almost conversational now. His gaze flicked over her again, lingering not just assessing, but appreciating in a way that felt far too aware. “You already are.”
A pause. “It will not matter.” He said it not with arrogance. But that same certainty. Because he could feel it. The bond. The pull. The inevitability curling through both of them like something alive.
“You carry me now,” he finished, voice low and final, “and I will come to collect what remains.”
Silence fell again. Heavy. Charged. And this time. When he looked at her. It wasn’t with curiosity. It was with intent.
