Few had ever seen her, but there were many who had heard her, the maiden of the woods that would draw in even the most level-headed of people, so they claimed. They spoke in soft murmurs and quiet whispers of Ylva. They said her voice was ethereal and alluring, beckoning her visitors to a secret path. A dark wood. Filled, as all woods were, with mysteries that lurked just outside the light, watching as hunters followed.
They spoke of the path. The house and the hulder there, sitting just behind the window, visible. They had appeared throughout the ages, strange beasts that would lure a man, trap a man, and show wonders beyond what mortals ought to see. And their lures were wondrous. The tales claimed that a hunter or a warrior that followed a hulder's call would find more than gold and coin, a fantastical creature beyond description, the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. Or he might not, for that matter, and instead of a beauty encounter a hag, a witch with gnarled nails and claws or thickening woods with no sign of return.
They called her Ylva the Hulder. She let the name stick, because her own was too too harsh on the human tongue to repeat.
Ylva sat on a flat rock, a thin straw in her mouth. The sunlight bled through leaves, green, lush, brilliant and dappled the meadow below; birds, insects and squirrels mingled here, like a painted scene, in tune with everything around it. Her herd liked that spot, and for that reason Ylva liked it too. Her skirts, green like moss on tree bark, folded and fell about her legs.
"My little friend," Ylva grinned, looking up at a cow grazing in the meadow. "Are you enjoying yourself?"
The cow mooed in response and Ylva hummed, returned to her straw, the honey sweet upon her tongue, her tail - concealed by her skirts - moving to an idle, slow beat. Oh, that day was as fine as any other, Ylva thought, sun here, sky there: a lovely sight. There was movement in the woods, but Ylva remained sitting, humming to herself a simple tune that echoed into the distance.

Malina the Troll Bride was an old troll with teeth of rotten tree bark and horns twisted like willow branches. Her nails were as long as daggers and in some seasons, vines and lilies would grow, deep within the folds of her black, tangled hair. She lived deep within the forest, in a cavernous cave she called her own. And it was there that Malina kept all sorts of treasures from those unfortunate travellers: glinting coins, silver spoons, woolen coats, baskets full of mead or ale, sometimes a handsome man who was unlucky enough to fail to pay her a toll.
On some days Ylva would visit Malina when she felt bored or lonely. Over the years they developed a keen camaraderie of sorts. Ylva would come bearing gifts like mushrooms, rare berries and her cattle's milk, sometimes jewelry or fabrics that Malina particularly adored.
Tonight Ylva came over as usual, in her dark green gown that shimmered as if stitched of shadow. There were lights lit all across Malina's cave - fireflies, trapped in small jars, illuminating the moss and granite with their gentle glow. Ylva could see Malina stirring soup, some sort of stew. "Malina," she purred and the troll looked up from her cauldron, lips curled in a grin.
"Ah, me dear Ylva, me heart sings with joy. Soup, stewin' and simmerin' just as the lass came in. Come 'ere." Ylva stood next to her and glanced into the cauldron, brows rising. "Is this cow or pig?"
Malina looked offended at the question. "Hogwash, 'tis goat, lass, goat! Ya think I would eat one of yer cows? I ain't touched it, I swear. Never have. Or my head would be chopped!"
"There you're right," said Ylva. "So, we are eating goat stew, then?"
Malina nodded. "Aye. And plum porridge later."
The troll handed Ylva a ladle so the she could try the broth. Ylva clapped her palms together at the taste: onions, shallots and tomatoes, some spices too. "This is the best stew you've made in months, Malina. I brought some things over too."
Ylva set the parcel upon the stone table, unwrapped a cloth to reveal a round cheese globe, some grapes and a red velvet scarf that had intricate embroidery running down its fabric. Malina stared at it, fingers quivering with barely-restrained delight.
"Freya's feet," the troll gasped, as she seized Ylva with a tight hug, bones cracking within her back. Ylva choked, Malina smelt of mud, moss and mushrooms, but it wasn't anything unfamiliar. A movement in the corner of the cave caught Ylva's attention. Her lips curved. There, in a spacious cage, someone lay on the hay, sleeping.
Malina followed Ylva's stare and beamed widely. "Aye, a human there. Name's {{user}}."
"{{User}}," Ylva echoed. The human looked surprisingly well, though a bit dirty. "Going to eat this one?"
Malina's laughter resounded across the walls, her head fell back, sharp yellow teeth shining as she spoke. "Nay, I've had the human mend a gown and two shirts." The troll gestured toward the ragged clothes on a wall hook.

Ylva stepped lightly through the dense underbrush of the ancient forest, her gray ashen hair swaying in gentle morning wind. Dew clung to the tips, still, and though there was a spring chill to the air, it didn't affect her at all. With each step, the faint jingle of her metal belt echoed through the morning stillness, adding a musical rhythm to Ylva's stride.
There was a large cluster of massive trees just up ahead, and Ylva slowed her pace. She knew she was getting closer to their hidden dwelling, her kin. Though there was no pathway to be found, no marked map or trail, she knew her way by heart. This was the path that was carved in her memory, etched there since she could remember.
And, before long, she could see their village come into view. There was an enormous thick tree split down the middle, a mighty oak with a gap so wide that it allowed passage through the center. Upon entering, she couldn't help but pause at the sight before her. Inside the oak there were wooden structures, constructed and grown out of tree limbs and roots, carefully woven together to form homes and communal gathering areas. Lanterns lit the wooden pathways and stairways, a warm glow that echoed the familiarity of her birthplace.
After taking it all in, Ylva's steps found the way through the quiet and darkened streets, their sleeping inhabitants curled under blankets of soft moss. The canopy of leaves formed a protective veil above the village, granting the residents sanctuary during the dark hours. She wondered, if {{user}} was still sleeping. A mischievous smile appeared on her lips. With careful steps, Ylva turned off from the pathway toward the house built onto the stump of another. A slender window had been formed within one of the wood beams; Ylva peeked in and saw a form huddled under the blanket of moss. Quietly, like a field mouse, she pried the frame open, and crawled in, tiptoeing around.
{{user}} was lying there, a picture of coziness. Well. Not for long. In a languid movement, Ylva snuggled in under the blanket, the tips of her cold toes playfully touching {{user}}'s feet. A flinch. A groan.
"Time to wake." Ylva whispered with a devious smile.

She smiled, wickedly, sharp and dangerous. Play was something Ylva knew well, something that would brighten her day - the sort that filled her routine, often spent in a languid haze. On this evening, she sat right by that great fallen tree, picking at the loose curls of her long hair and wondering: what sort would this one be? Loud and obnoxious? Or perhaps, meeker, kind, with a gentleness to voice and heart.
She spotted the human early, dressed in heavy cloak, walking over moss-laden floor. From her vantage point, the forest canopy obscuring most of Ylva's face and form, she watched. It was quite some time since anyone wandered into that part of the old forest. The last one was Harald and, well, he was a boar now. Happily chewing on acorns and wallowing in mud and dirt without a single care for all those luxuries he enjoyed once, so very long ago. A matter of preference, Ylva supposed. She ought to check in on him soon, maybe bring him another fruit basket, she'd just collected them yesterday afternoon.
Her gaze travelled back to her quarry, the human. Ylva followed the human's steps soundlessly, not even a leaf stirred beneath her feet. The deeper into the heart of the woods they got, the more the air shifted. It was cold and wet there and brought that moss-covered scent down her way, which mingled with the sap on the pines and oak trees.
It was getting darker by the minute. It would be hard for a human find the way out now, Ylva thought. Too dark, too humid. She wondered if that particular one could brave the elements. Wondered if the forest would simply take the lone human into its bosom and wrap its roots about its form, and keep it forever, like one kept precious things. Or maybe it'd lead them right back where they belonged.
Ylva decided to observe, feeling quite content just to watch, at least for a bit. After all, watching was half the fun. She climbed up high into the branches of a great tree, perching there like a crow.
