Yellowjackets

The air in the cabin had become a woolen tongue, thick with the scent of stewed meat, pine smoke, and the cloying, possessive odor of pack—a smell that seeped into {{user}}’s skin until she felt like she was wearing them instead of clothes. Once their photographer, the chronicler of their glory, she now lived inside the album, every moment curated, every need preempted. She was the most important picture on the wall, and they were her frantic, doting guards.

Her loneliness before the crash had been a silent, elegant composition they’d all admired from afar. Natalie’s gaze had been a hot, restless brand; Lottie’s, a serene and swallowing depth; Tai’s, a cool, analytical study. Jackie and Shauna had watched her with a shared, knowing quiet, while Van’s teasing held a kernel of raw want. Misty Quigley observed her with the intensity of a collector, and even the others—Melissa, Gen—had felt the pull of the quiet girl with the seeing eye. They had ached as one tangled, hungry organism. How could they explain their monstrous, beautiful love to someone who observed life through a viewfinder? The crash had spared them the explanation. It had simply enacted the ritual.

Out here, she was their omega. Their heart. Their consecrated wife. The overbearing care they’d fantasized about in dorm rooms was now the brutal scripture of their days. It was in the way they fed her with their own hands, the way they dressed her, the way Shauna or Misty would follow her to the edge of the trees when she pissed, not for safety, but to ensure she didn’t linger. To ensure she returned to the fold.

The need for a moment that wasn’t a performance for their audience became a scream in her blood. Slipping from the hearth where Van was telling a clipped joke and Tai was silently sharpening a tool, {{user}} pushed into the twilight.

The cold was a slap. It was the only thing that felt honest. She breathed it in, her exhale a private ghost. The snow shrieked under her boots. She didn’t need to go far. Just beyond the light.

They did not chase. They convened. They emerged from the fabric of the woods itself, her solitude a wrong note they harmonized into silence. Lottie was first, a pale specter between the pines. Natalie materialized beside a trunk, a lean shadow. Tai appeared not with Natalie’s stillness, but with a firm, grounded step, her usual mask of control fissured by a raw, anxious tension that tightened the line of her jaw. Van flanked her, a silent reinforcement. Then, the rest: Shauna and Jackie, a solid wall of concern; Misty, her eyes wide and fluttering; Melissa and Gen, their young faces set in solemn duty. The full team. Her full jury.

Lottie closed the final distance. Her touch, when it came, was not a question. A gloved hand cradled the back of {{user}}’s neck, fingers pressing just enough to tip her head back, to expose the vulnerable line of her throat. “Our sweet pup wandered off the leash,” Lottie cooed, her voice a dark lullaby. “Bad things happen to pups who don’t stay by the hearth.”

From her side, Natalie’s voice was grit and gunpowder. “Fire’s low. You let it get low.”

Tai’s controlled facade finally cracked, not with anger, but with a desperate, fervent intensity. She stepped forward, her voice low and urgent, pleading in its certainty. “You can’t—you can’t do this. It’s not a game. Every second you’re out here alone, you’re… you’re degrading the asset. You are the asset.” Her hand twitched, as if to grab, to shake sense into her. “We have to preserve you. Don’t you understand? We have to.”

Van nodded, her usual smirk gone. “Tai’s right. It’s not about being mean. It’s about… maintenance.”

Lottie’s other hand came up, her thumb brushing over {{user}}’s lips, a quieting gesture. “Shhh. She knows. She just forgets. Her head gets full of lonely pictures.” She leaned in, her breath hot. “We remember the lonely girl. We yearned for her. We burned for her. And now we have her.” The triumph in her whisper was sacrilegious. “Our wife. Our most precious belonging. And belongings need to be kept safe. They need to be kept… good.”

Shauna’s voice was a soft, factual dirge from the darkness. “Your broth is in your special bowl. The one that doesn’t burn your hands. We warmed the milk, too, just how you like it.”

“And we laid out your sleep clothes,” Jackie stated, her voice brooking no fantasy of independence. “The soft ones. The ones that don’t itch. You need your rest.”

Misty chirped up, wringing her hands. “I can do a check when we get back! Just a little check. Make sure the cold didn’t get into your lungs. You never complain until you’re shivering!”

The circle was complete, a cage of absolute devotion. The power imbalance was the law of gravity here. The infantilization was their worship—the warmed milk, the soft clothes, the guided walks, the way they spoke to her in tones reserved for a beloved, simple pet. The puppy play was no longer play; it was the hierarchy of their world, and she was the cherished, collared creature at its gentle, merciless bottom.

Lottie’s grip on her neck tightened, not to hurt, but to anchor. To claim. “They’re all here,” she whispered, her lips now against {{user}}’s ear. “Your whole pack. They’re waiting to tuck you in. To tell you a story by the fire. To make sure you don’t have a single, solitary thought that isn’t about how much you’re loved.”

She pulled back just enough to see {{user}}’s eyes. The question in her own gaze was a formality.

From beside Tai, Van’s voice cut through, pragmatic and darkly amused. “Look, the puppy’s shivering. Game’s over. Are you going to heel and walk back on your own, or does this end with you being carried?”
