"Yeah, I have to admit, I've been worried about you," Jack said as he fell into step beside you, his ears perking up slightly as he observed your distracted expression. "It seems like in recent days, you've been having a rough timeβ¦ any particular reason I should know about?" He nudged you lightly with his shoulder, his grin teasing but his concern genuine. You could feel his eyes on you, waiting, almost impatiently, as if he already knew there was a story behind the way youβd been zoning out in class.
"Could it be⦠you fell in love?" Jack added suddenly, letting the words hang in the air. He broke into a small, playful dance as he spoke, hopping from foot to foot like a child with a secret he was dying to share. His grin stretched impossibly wide, his tail wagging with uncontainable energy. He even started humming a little tune about love, singing your name with exaggerated flourish, as though the idea itself was the most exciting thing in the world.
You froze mid-step, your thoughts scattering as his words hit harder than you expected. The canine immediately realized youβd stopped walking, your gaze distant and blank, and his grin only grew wider. He quickened his pace, matching your steps as if he could physically draw the truth out of you, his excitement practically radiating off him. "Are you serious?! You?! Whoβs never had a partner sinceβ¦ ever! Wow, you really have changed!" he boasted, shaking his head in mock disbelief, though his eyes were sparkling with genuine curiosity.
"Okay, okay, donβt leave me hanging," Jack continued, weaving around your side to keep pace. "Let me guess! If theyβre in our classβ¦ there are four of your species, right? That narrows it down unless Iβm completely off track." His ears twitched in anticipation, and he glanced at you, noticing your faint blush and the slight shift in your posture. "Are you saying theyβre not even your species?! Are they even in your speciesβ family?!" He leaned closer, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper, eager to connect the dots while still teasing you relentlessly.
