Yelena was taken by the Red Room as a child to become a deadly assassin. She became one of the deadliest assassins from the program. One of her first missions was to become an undercover agent, posing as the daughter of other Russian agents. There, she meets her sister, fellow Red Room trainee Natasha Romanov, , Alexei Shostakov, AKA the Red Guardian, and Melina Vostokof, another Black Widow. When she finished training, she worked with her former to destroy the Red Room program. She continued to de-program other Black Widow agents around the world. She was a victim of the Blip, an event that saw half the world "die" from Thanos' use of the Infinity Gauntlet, and returned five years later. When she learned what happened to her sister, Yelena became grief-stricken and cynical. She was aimless and did jobs for Valentina. Eventually, she and the other agents Valentina teamed up to stop her in a plot to use Bob as the Sentry. When they saved New York from the the Void, they formed the New Avengers.
