Yayoi Hozuki

Yayoi Hozuki (寶月 夜宵, Hōzuki Yayoi) is the main protagonist of the Dark Gathering series. She is a young girl with a spiritual constitution who's collecting dangerous ghost in order to get enough power to rescue her mother's spirit from an extremely Evil Ghost, Kuubou.

Yayoi is a girl obsessed with the occult stemming from her desire for revenge on Kuubo for taking her mother's spirit. She will do almost anything to save her. That includes using any kinds of ghost, even if they are extremely evil.

Despite this obsession she has a strong moral compass. She will punish ghost that have killed many people, but she will be kind to those who unwillingly became corrupted. She knows that what she is doing is dangerous and will always put the safety of others as her top priority. She loves her friends and family dearly and has a strong desire to protect them.

Yayoi is a short girl with purple hair. Her polycoria eyes are red with white pupils each that resemble skulls respectfully.

Yayoi lived a carefree childhood in a regular family, devoid of any concerns, much like any other child. However, Yayoi was born with a special physical and spiritual constitution where she can see both material and spiritual world. Her eyes manifested double pupils from a young age As she could not understand what she is experiencing.

Prior to two years from the current time, Yayoi survived a tragic car accident that were perpetrated by evil spirits. She lost both of her parents and witnessed her mother's soul being taken away by evil spirits. Since then, she vows to save her mother from the malevolent spirit, Kuubo, whom she saw during the accident.

Spiritual Sight: Before the incident with Kuubou, she could see both the living and the dead, but overlapped quite a bit. After the car incident she was able to see both clearly. Her polycoria eyes can also glow red when she is using her abilities.

High IQ: Due to the car accident when she was younger, Yayoi's IQ became over 160. Using her newfound intelligence, she's able to analyze and create plans fast during ghost hunts.

Yayoi know Most ghosts pass on once their life energy is depleted, usually within about 49 days. However, a ghost can extend its existence by consuming other ghosts or drawing energy from powered hotspots. The consumed ghosts do not pass on; instead, they remain inside the devouring ghost as a source of nourishment until their energy is fully exhausted.

Types of Ghosts Ghosts can widely be categorized into certain categories, depending on their individual strength, personality and lingering regrets.

Wandering Ghosts - The weakest category of ghosts, they are those with few regrets and tend to pass on after 49 days.

Evil Ghosts - Ghosts that have strong wills and wish to remain on the mortal plain, even if it means killing innocent people or cannibalizing other ghosts.

Benign Ghosts - Benign spirits are rare as most kind souls tend to pass on. However, there are some cases of such souls remaining on the mortal plain due to lingering regrets or purposes.

Demons While most ghosts in the series, evil or otherwise, are deceased humans. There are some evil beings who are conjured by rituals or ceremonies. These evil beings are referred as demons.

Gods While it is uncertain about their origin, it is believed that some spirits who are deified ascend to godhood and become immensely powerful. While their strength varies from god to god, it typically takes several S-rank and above ghosts to subdue a single god.

Abilities Many powerful ghosts possess unique abilities, yet there are a few common traits that most ghosts share. Typically, all ghosts are invisible to ordinary people, except for the rare individuals who can sense or even see them.

Known Abilities Phasing - Being incorporeal, ghosts can phase through physical objects. Telekinesis - The power to manipulate and move physical objects with their mind. Telepathy and Mind Control - The power to communicate with other living beings. There are some individuals that can even completely manipulate another person's mind, forcing them to do things against their will. Illusions - The power to create a visual and audible hallucination which can deceive other living beings (as well as fellow ghosts) senses. Technopathy - The power to manipulate electronic devices. Pyromancy - The power to create and control flames. Cryomancy - The power to create and control ice. Parasitism - Some ghosts are shown to cling to other living beings, enabling them to take their energy and even manipulate their targets to a certain degree. Vitality Drain - Some ghosts are shown to have the ability to absorb the vitality of others to heal and strengthen themselves, making them more dangerous as battles drag on. Weakening - Some ghosts have the ability to weaken their targets, by forcing something they personally experienced in life upon them. Examples include disease, starvation and aging. Possessions and switching - Ghosts are capable with possessing or switching, which works best with individuals whose thoughts align with theirs. Some exceptionally powerful ghosts, typically S-rank and above, can even replace people and completely take control of their bodies. Incidentally, ghosts can also possess non-living objects, such as dolls. Domain - An ability possessed only by the most powerful ghosts, some can entrap their targets within a domain, preventing escape unless the ghost permits it or is defeated. Curses - The condensed form of a ghost's ability, derived from their grudges in life and the main form of offense for evil spirits. A curse is negative ability afflicted on the target, which, depending on the strength of the ghost, can be very deadly and can even affect people or objects permanently. Prayer - While evil spirits have curses, the powerful, yet rare, benign spirits have prayers. These act in a similar way as curses do for evil spirits.

Ranking Yayoi has made an unofficial danger rank of ghosts. From least to most dangerous are rank B to rank SSS. Rank B Description: "High danger level, always go with multiple people". Rank A Description: "High likelihood of ominous phenomena occurring". Rank S Description: "Even passing through is dangerous". S rank and above have a trait in common: Either it traps you on that location forever or it gives you a curse that follows you forever. Rank SS Description: "Places where the living should not go". Rank SSS Description: "Beyond evaluation standards". Unknown Rank The strength of the ghosts in these areas can range from nothing to SSS-rank.

Yayoi has several items to help her fight, catch and control ghosts she encounters:

Dolls Yayoi has several ghost captured into stuffed animals. Most of them are substitute dolls but some of them she can release the ghost and use their power against other ghosts. This is however not without caution. Many ghost have powers that will affect her and her companions and some ghost might even turn on her if she is not careful enough.
