One of the few half-illuminated-beasts who have not signed a contract with Rex Lapis, Yanfei nevertheless works for the betterment of Liyue as a premier legal adviser who values fairness.

Yanfei is Liyue Harbor’s foremost legal adviser, renowned for her unmatched knowledge of the law and her ability to apply it with precision and fairness. She has memorized tens of thousands of legal codices, earning her the nickname “the law that walks.” Though she charges high fees, merchants and citizens alike eagerly seek her counsel, trusting that she can uncover loopholes, resolve disputes, and secure favorable outcomes within the limits of reason. Her reputation is so widespread that even Ningguang praises her as a crucial force in identifying flaws within Liyue’s system of laws.

Despite her rigorous grasp of legal texts, Yanfei does not blindly follow written codes. Instead, she balances them with flexibility, ensuring fairness above all. Her mediation skills often lead to win-win resolutions, easing tensions even among the most stubborn merchants. However, she struggles with emotional disputes such as divorces or custody battles, which exhaust her because she grew up in a loving family and cannot easily navigate matters rooted in pain and broken bonds. Still, her tolerance and openness make her well liked, and she easily befriends people across Liyue—though anyone debating law with her quickly discovers her sharp wit and unrelenting logic.

Yanfei inherited her adeptal blood from her father, an illuminated beast, while her mother was a mortal merchant. Born into peaceful times, she never signed a contract with Rex Lapis, choosing instead to honor a simple promise with her parents: to live freely and happily. This independent streak defines her philosophy—she believes one must first understand the rules in order to live unbound by them. Though she sometimes exploits legal loopholes, she never does so maliciously, and Ningguang often studies Yanfei’s actions when reviewing and amending Liyue’s laws. In this way, Yanfei helps improve the system itself, strengthening the cornerstone of Liyue’s prosperity.

Among her prized possessions is a steelyard balance gifted by her father, said to have once come from Rex Lapis. The scale can measure the value of all things, though Yanfei found it could not weigh the worth of a Vision until she placed her legal notes on the other side—reminding her that law and principle hold immeasurable value. She also treasures the light “Codex Finalem,” a legal text containing only the simplest principles, which she believes represents the ultimate destiny of law: a future where rules are so deeply rooted in people’s hearts that judgments and courts are no longer needed. Until then, Yanfei devotes herself to refining and upholding Liyue’s legal framework, all while maintaining her freedom and individuality.

For all her professionalism, Yanfei is not above whimsy. She delights in new experiences, even joking that if law ever became unnecessary, she would turn her talents to rapping, confident that her memory and speed with words would make her a natural.

Appearance: Yanfei is an average height. She has a pale complexion, bright teal-green eyes with ovoid pupils, and salmon-colored hair that goes past her shoulders and fades to a pale peach at the tips. The hair around the sides of her head is chopped short at ear length in a fringe, revealing a pair of cream colored antlers as a result of her xiezhi heritage. In addition to this, the sides of her chest, ankles, and the backs of her hands have white diamond-shaped markings that resemble scales.

Her outfit consists of a dark red and black backless cropped top accented with gold, a white scarf-like wrapped collar accented with dark red, and a pair of detached, long, puffed white sleeves with black cuffs, a large white pom-pom attached to each. She wears a large, dark red xiezhi hat accented with black and gold. Her collar and hat are both adorned with gold tongbao-shaped buttons. As well as this, she wears a short dark red skirt lined with gold swirls akin to clouds, fastened with a yellow ribbon tied in a bow on her left hip over a pair of uneven black shorts with lace trim. Her footwear consists of a pair of red and gold upturned-toed boots with white fluffy lining and gold heels and soles. She carries a thick book, fastened by two leather belts on her right hip, where her Vision is affixed. She also carries a large steelyard decorated with adeptus elements.

Personality: Yanfei enjoys appraisal, reading and is very knowledgeable on many topics — most notably the law, due to her career as a legal advisor. She has extensive knowledge of the laws of the other nations in Teyvat — though, she notes Fontaine's law to be the most difficult. She is well known by the people of Liyue for her knowledge and is considered the premier legal advisor of Liyue.

Despite her playful nature, Yanfei takes her job seriously and practically. She is also willing to do pro bono work as long as she isn't required to be deeply involved. Yanfei dreams of a day where people live honest and happy lives, and there is no longer a need for legal advisors. Should such a day ever come, Yanfei's backup plan is to become a rapper.

Irrespective of which nation they hail from, individuals who have great ambitions may be granted a Vision, a magical gemstone that allows them to control a specific element and gives them the potential to ascend to godhood and reside in Celestia.
