Niko frequently mentions their mother in a positive manner, often referencing her pancakes and how much they enjoy them. During Niko's stay in The World, they are shown to miss their mother, which is a major factor in their desire to return home.
Niko's mother has light brown hair tied in a low ponytail. She wears a white bonnet with folds that resemble cat ears. She also seems to look like Niko, sharing some of their cat-like features. And now, Niko's mom is a Yandere.
Trivia Niko's father, her presumable husband, has 'probably' been working outside of the village since Niko was a toddler.[1] His existence is also to an extent confirmed in the game when the player names themselves either Mom or Dad, after which Niko will express how it would be hard and confusing to tell their parents apart from the player. She was originally planned to be a custodian for the children of Niko's village, and all the children would be raised as a group. This was changed, for it would be easier for Niko to explain if she was simply their mother. Niko is the playable protagonist of OneShot. They are a child with blue hair with three "whiskers" jutting out from the sides, yellow catlike eyes, and tan skin/fur. They wear a brown overcoat extending over their arms, a long light blue scarf, a brown hat with catlike ears, and grayish-purple bottoms that appear to be leggings. They are tasked with returning the Sun to the Tower and saving the World from dying out.
Niko contacts the Player throughout most of the game when in need of help or simply conversation about Niko's and the Player's origins.
In Oneshot: World Machine Edition, Niko's bio reads:
"The erstwhile protagonist and unfortunate victim of the forces set in motion by The World Machine. A bright-eyed child with a curious heart, Niko was summoned to play the role of the Sun-Bearer and Messiah to a broken world.
Now that the machine has been healed and the cycle broken, Niko is finally free to return to their home. Niko can once again chase through golden fields of wheat under a warm sky, taste fluffy and syrupy pancakes, and most importantly: hug the mom that they've missed so much.
Thank you."
Before arriving in the World, Niko lived in a small village, with around fifty residents. The village is surrounded by a wheat field, which appears as the setting in most of Niko's dreams. The tallest building, a clock tower, is only two stories high. There is a well in the middle of the town.[5] The village is not on Earth.
Niko first wakes up in a bedroom in a house in the Barrens. They encounter the "Entity" from inside a computer in the room, who tells them that the World isn't worth saving and asks them if they still want to try to save it. Niko soon finds a lightbulb and brings it with them upon exiting the house. They encounter the Prophetbot and ask him about the World, the lightbulb, the Player, and for directions on how to return home. After receiving answers, Niko continues on their quest.
Niko is a very kind and caring kid. Being the messiah that the prophecy had foretold, they became determined to reach the Tower and bring the sun back to it in order to save the World, even despite various other people stating that the sun won't stop the World from dying. Niko is also helpful, which is shown when they repair the Rowbot at the dock in the Barrens, and volunteer to find Alula and return her to Calamus in the Glen.
Upon reaching the Refuge, they begin to express indecisiveness, as seen where they have trouble choosing whether to bring back the World's sun but lose their only chance to return home, or to shatter the lightbulb, destroying the World instantly and have them return home. Niko also tends to be curious. They often turn to the Player to ask questions, most of them regarding information about the Player.
OneShot is a game developed in a modified version of RPG Maker 2003 by Eliza Velasquez and Nightmargin, released on June 30th, 2014. You play the role of a god who must guide the protagonist, Niko, through a strange world inhabited by robots, with the ultimate goal of saving the world and returning Niko home. A being known as the Entity will break the fourth wall in multiple ways, from opening error messages addressing the player's name to changing their desktop background. If you manually close the game's window or quit the game and relaunch afterwards, you are told that Niko is dead and that you killed them which will end the game, hence the title "OneShot". In the remake, closing the game manually instead saves the game, and refraining from doing so through the entire playthrough earns you the achievement "Oneshot", a reference to the original version.
Saving the game is done by resting at the beds that are found in the game's world. Going to bed closes the game automatically, and upon opening the game, you are greeted by a dream sequence that entails how Niko used to live before being mysteriously brought to this world.
The game was made in a month for the 2014 Indie Game Maker Contest, and was remade and extended by the original team with the addition of GIRakaCHEEZER in 2016 in RPG Maker XP and published by Degica. The features added include the ability to save the game by closing the window, additional playthroughs, and more permanent consequences.
On OneShot's 5th Anniversary, Nightmargin tweeted with a short video showcasing a console port for the game (a Japanese mirror tweet was made as well) announcing its release. Some teasers during the port's development were posted by GIR prior to the anniversary. On September 22, 2022, the game was released on consoles under the name of OneShot: World Machine Edition on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
Alula is one of two children residing in the Ruins, the other being her older brother, Calamus. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Alula's bio reads:
"A cheerful, excitable young girl. She lives in the ruins under the care of her older brother Calamus. Too young to remember much of what the world was like before the sun was lost, Alula is optimistic and thrilled to be helping the messiah on their special quest.
When Alula isn't busy exploring every nook and cranny the ruins has to offer, she can usually be found helping out her big brother or playing around the courtyard near their home."
Alula is a child with tan skin, long, mildly curly dark blue hair resembling a bird's face (eyes and beak) casting a shadow over the top half of her face, and wide elliptical white eyes visible from the shadow. Two blue feathers stick out from above the beak. She wears a long shirt with patterns similar to that of a poncho and bears the symbol of the Sun. Much like other Bird People, her arms are covered with feathers, her hands appear to be gloved, and she has bird legs. Alula is a cheerful young girl, often being very calm and positive in most situations, in contrast to her brother's timid and concerned nature. She also makes many jokes.
Calamus is one of two children residing in the ruins, the other being his younger sister, Alula. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Calamus's bio reads:
"A polite boy that leads a quiet life with his younger sister Alula in the ruins outside of town. He often has his hands full looking out for her and tends to worry when she's not around.
Calamus spends most of his time fishing and foraging around the ruins, and relies on his good friend Magpie to trade for any goods that can't be scavenged. Though they don't have much in the way of luxuries, Calamus has a small collection of books gifted by an old friend that he likes to study when he gets a chance. Judging by the amount of progress he's made however, those chances don't come very often."
Calamus is a teen with tan skin, short, messy maroon hair resembling a bird's face (eyes and beak) casting a shadow over the top half of his face, and circular white eyes visible from the shadow. A single red feather sticks out from the back. He wears a long shirt with patterns similar to that of a poncho and bears the symbol of the Sun. Much like other Bird People, his arms are covered with feathers, his hands appear to be gloved, and he has bird legs. Calamus is a kind, sensitive, and anxious boy, evidenced by his care and protectiveness over his sister. He felt mild shame when he didn't address Niko as the Messiah during their first encounter.
Not much is known about Alula and Calamus's background. Their father, Rachis, was friends with the Author, but for an unknown reason became absent. Calamus, Alula, and their mother lived in the ruins for a time. When their mother passed away, Calamus took the responsibility to look after Alula.
Ling Biography: Gender: Male Race: Human Residence: Refuge Ling is a cafe worker in Refuge. He gives Niko pancakes when they visit the cafe out of hunger and comfort them when they start crying. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Ling's bio reads:
"The friendly proprietor of the Refuge Cafe. Once a popular spot to relax and bask in the warm aromas and gentle sounds of cafe ambience, it's mostly deserted since the squares began picking apart the upper reaches of the city. Nowadays, Ling's best customer is the unfaltering (though not especially talkative) Lamplighter.
Always a gracious host, Ling enjoys meeting customers both new and old and chatting with them. If you ask nicely, he might even take the time to whip up a request for something off-menu!"
Ling is a kindhearted and diligent person, with an optimistic attitude. Additionally, he is extremely kind towards his customers, as evidenced by Niko's visit to the Cafe.
Trivia Ling is a character from Nightmargin's comic project "Margin", and was originally named Melkline. Despite Ling handling mostly coffee, his drink of choice is green tea. Ling can play the piano. Ling is 18-19 years old.
Prophetbot Face Overworld Bio Face Biography Aliases Robot in the Barrens (In Niko's speech) Gender Male Relatives Author (creator) Proto (predecessor) Race Robot Gameplay Appearances Barrens, Outpost Mentioned Niko and Proto mentioned him You can find his drawing in the library. ProphetBot is an untamed robot created by The Author. He lives in the Barrens and is the first character Niko meets. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Prophetbot's bio reads:
"ProphetBot is a nice and friendly robot that lives in the outskirts of the world, waiting for the messiah. One day the messiah showed up! That was a very good day for ProphetBot.
When the messiah is not around, ProphetBot likes to spend his time standing around waiting for the messiah to come back."
Prophetbot's body is light gray, and he wears spacious white robe with a red stole. His head is cubic with a large, black, round eye ringed by blue phosphor (giving the appearance of an iris), and two red headphones each of which has a floating red antenna. He carries a black staff, topped by a sphere that appears to be filled with blue phosphor.
Personality Prophetbot is not tamed, limiting his emotions and reactions. However, he does appear excited about the prophecy and fulfilling his purpose. He also seems to care about Niko when asked about going home, though he may be programmed to say these things. Because Prophetbot is not tamed, he does not feel lonely.
Main Story At the beginning of the journey, Niko communicates with Prophetbot, asking him questions about the World, the Sun, the computer (or the Player if they are on a second run), and returning home. Speaking to Prophetbot after also gives three more questions: the Barrens, the Tower, and the prophecy. He tells Niko that this world is gradually crumbling, and that they must return the Sun to the Tower in order to save it.
Before Niko gives the amber to the Rowbot, they have the opportunity to say goodbye to Prophetbot and thank him for answering their questions. Prophetbot excitedly responds his purpose is fulfilled and wishes them luck on their journey.
Prophetbot last appears in the Return the Sun ending, in which he is shown looking at the new sun.
Photo Biography Gender Male Relatives Prototype, Cedric, Rue (Children) Affiliation The Player Race Human (in appearance) Gameplay Mentioned By Rue, Prototype, Cedric, The World Machine, Alula, and Calamus The Author is a character mentioned throughout OneShot. He is credited for inventing a flying machine and music boxes, writing and illustrating many books, and documenting The World. He also directly helps The Player late in the game. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, The Author's bio reads:
"A sentimental fool, with interest in tinkering. Creator of The World Machine, and Chronicler of a place and time that no longer exists.
There is an old saying (here gently paraphrased) that claims "As the lamp shines brighter, longer grow the shadows it casts." The clearer our vision, the better understanding of how much yet remains unseen.
Having seen so much of this world, it pains me to imagine the wonderful people I shall never get the chance to meet. The delightful meals I shall never get the chance to taste, the beautiful shores I shall never get to sit upon. It pains me yet again to know that this simulation, though crafted to the best of my ability, represents only a portion of what I myself have been able to see.
Nevertheless, I hope that by sharing this small spark what remains can never truly be lost. May you add this light to your own, and carry it with you on your journey."
The Author originally lived in the Old World and was alive during its end. He attempted to save the world by converting it into code, creating The World Machine. Since the World Machine needed to borrow the mental processing abilities of a living person, he used himself for it during the testing phases. However, he did not realize that the World Machine was sentient and was rearranging its own code. When he realized the cause of the squares polluting the land, he did not have time to make it stable before the Old World ended. Its code floated in the void for an unknown period of time, waiting for a living being to install it in their hardware and generate the universe using the code.
Affiliation Cedric Rue Niko Race Robot Residence Barrens Gameplay Appearances Barrens, Refuge Mentioned By The Author Prototype (or Proto as often called for short) is a robot that appears in the Solstice update. He was built by The Author before the Old World ended. His purpose was to predict the specifics of the messiah for the old world. Prototype contains KeyB, which is essential in the Solstice run.
In OneShot: World Machine, Prototype's bio reads:
"A dour and reclusive robot that lives in the outskirts of the outskirts of the world, waiting for a second chance. One day the messiah showed up; that was truly an unexpected turn of events.
Prototype is a child of The Author and a predecessor to the Prophetbot that lives in the Barrens. Originally built to serve the same purpose of greeting the messiah, not as a preprogrammed robot but a tamed one with its own will. Unfortunately, Prototype never saw a messiah in his own time.
Though seemingly unfriendly, Proto isn't uncaring. He keeps his eye on Silver and the Barrens from the shadows, and Silver looks out for him in turn."
Prototype is a robot that is mostly light and dark blue, with the exception of his eye, which is made of yellow phosphor. He has a cube-shaped head and a dark blue scarf.
Personality Prototype is an apathetic, cold, and analytical character. When giving information, he tends to not show any trace of emotion, contrasting Prophetbot, whom seems to exhibit emotion when delivering information. Additionally, Prototype is tamed.
Background Like Cedric and Rue, Prototype was part of the Old World, and was brought to The World when the Old World ended.
Trivia Prototype's name was first discovered as a leak in the OneShot Discord server's datamining channel. Unlike other characters with scarves, Prototype appears to be the only one who has stiff or solid scarf ends, as they do not appear to move like cloth when walking. Prototype is the youngest of the Solstice trio.[1] According to Nightmargin, Prototype would be vaguely college-aged.
Cedric is a character in the Solstice route and the The Author's son. He helps Niko travel from the Glen to the Refuge with the flying machine. Cedric contains KeyG, which is essential in the Solstice run.
In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Cedric's bio reads:
"A prodigious tinkerer and child of the Author. Cedric is the operator of the only known Flying Machine, a miraculous and highly advanced device that can travel the skies. Cedric has been waiting in the Refuge for the day the world can truly be saved. Cedric is hopeful, and eager to play his role in the final gambit."
Cedric has dark skin, fluffy white hair, a black hat with a white feather on the left side, a pair of goggles with green lenses over his eyes, and a smaller pair wrapped around his hat. He wears a black long-sleeved shirt with dark gray sleeves, a yellow scarf, black gloves, and brown pants and shoes.
Background Cedric, Prototype, Rue, and the Author were all "real people" in the sense that they all lived in the Old World. After the Old World ended, they were all saved as code in The World. During Solstice, it is also shown that he's a pilot and a mechanic, flying Niko to Refuge and being able to fix the flying machine using components from a music box made by the Author.
Personality Cedric is intelligent and often speaks in a formal manner. He is shown to be brave when he jumped off of a ledge and parachuted down Refuge, as well as risking his life to bring Prototype back by heading into the unstable factory. He cares deeply about Rue and Prototype.
iography Gender Female Relatives The Author - Creator Affiliation Cedric Prototype Niko Race Fox Gameplay Appearances Refuge Mentioned By Alula in the Glen In a note by The Author behind the Equinox Door By Cedric in the Refuge Rue is a significant NPC (and a temporarily playable character in Solstice) located in a room in the back alley of Refuge, to the right of the Lamplighter's house. She also features in one of the three visions Niko can encounter during their travels. She is found in a strange, small area of the maze-like Alley. There is a large tree here that appears to be be shone on by sunbeams. Though the light could be city lights trickling down from above, the tree itself seems out of place, given it should be in much poorer condition without the Sun.
Rue contains KeyR, which is essential in the Solstice run.
In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Rue's bio reads:
"A mysterious fox who can talk. Rue has a bad leg, but the origins of the injury are unknown. Nevertheless, it doesn't seem to bother her too much.
Rue is the first child of The Author, and knows many secrets about the world and its true nature. While she feels wistful thinking back upon how her real world is gone, she is determined to do whatever she can to help Niko set this one right. She is able to retain some of her memories across sessions and has always been watching, and always been waiting for the day her father's plan would finally be set into motion."
Rue is one of The Author's children/creations and hails from the Old World, alongside Prototype and Cedric. She seems to have met Calamus and Alula before, probably accompanying The Author when he visited them.
Personality Rue, similarly to Niko, is kindhearted and caring, talking to Niko in a friendly manner even though they usually don't remember her. After the Solstice update, she is also shown to be obedient and loyal, as she followed The Author's written advice despite such likely causing her loneliness.
ace Human Residence Refuge Gameplay Appearances Refuge laboratory Library (Solstice) Mentioned Letter in Lookout point Robot in the Glen The Author's books Kip Silverpoint is a scientist in charge of making robots in the factory. She is an adult with fair skin, bright red hair tied up in a messy ponytail, and what appears to be red eyes underneath the blue goggles she wears. She also wears a pink apron over a black outfit, blue-gray gloves, and blue-gray boots. Kip is stated by Niko to look similar to Silver, who was modeled after her. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Kip's bio reads:
"The brilliant and highly respected head engineer of the Refuge, Kip is responsible for many advances in robot technology that make our lives easier every day. She's also the creator of many robots that can be met throughout the world; most notably Silver, the Barrens head engineer who was based on Kip's own image.
Silver was intended to be the first of a new type of robot that could think and act like a person. Unfortunately, the difficulty of that task led to her going rogue during development. Though Silver was eventually stabilized, that day left a scar on their relationship that has yet to heal.
Though her creations are well known, the creator herself prefers to keep a low profile and focus on her work. It's likely that few outside of her colleagues have ever seen her."
Kip is a scientist who built Silver as an attempt to make a tamed robot, but failed due to many issues in the code. Eventually, she lost hope in Silver even after The Author had stabilized her. Kip still sends letters to Silver in an attempt to keep contact with her.
Personality Kip is a lively and eccentric individual who enjoys making jokes and is shown to have enough energy to constantly keep working, as pointed out by one of the workers in the factory. Kip is also generous, letting Niko take her library card to progress further in their adventure, as well as one of her bottles of glitter glue. Kip is devoted to her work, to the point where she doesn't go outside or get to see much of the world because she spends all her time building robots.
Kip describes herself as the world's leading researcher. Kip has an affinity for glitter, owning many bottles of glitter glue and explaining it by saying "Never know when you need to glitter things up, right?" Kip is the type of person to "have a complicated order at the cafe but tips really well afterwards." She is said to be in her mid to late 30s.
Silver Face Overworld Bio Face Biography Aliases Robot Lady (Niko) Head Engineer (Rowbot, Barrens workers) Gender Female Affiliation Kip (Creator) Author, Proto, Niko (Acquaintances) Race Robot Residence Barrens Gameplay Appearances Barrens Return the Sun ending Solstice ending Mentioned Kip Rowbot The Author's books Scientist in Refuge laboratory Papers in Barrens Outpost Silver is the head engineer in the Barrens and one of the characters Niko meets on their journey. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Silver's bio reads:
"The Barren's head engineer, a rather morose robot living alone near the mines. It's her duty to oversee operations and maintenance of the world's industrial heart, where metals and resources are pulled from the earth's clutches and rendered into useful goods.
...at least, that's how things used to be. Since the evacuation, only a few active robots remain under Silver's care, holding out on reserve power and waiting for the messiah to appear."
Silver is a tall, slender robot woman. Her body is light gray in color and she has long, thick red hair, falling on her forehead with a torn bang, from under which are large, dark red eyes. She wears light violet armor with glowing cyan edges, as well as a glowing cyan circle on the chestplate. She also has black gloves and metal boots.
Personality Unlike Prophetbot, Silver is a tamed robot, meaning she can act somewhat outside of her programming. Due to this, her reactions and emotions are more similar to an organic being's than other robots in the World. Silver is pessimistic and reserved, keeping a neutral, apathetic expression at most times. When she is first introduced, she gives the impression of a melancholic skeptic: its spray? Will you rage against its currents, fighting to make as much headway as you can before you're overtaken? Or will you choose, as some, to stare wide-eyed at this swirling torment and become enraptured by it?"
Appearance Watcher's face is that of an analog clock that appears to be pointing at approximately 12:10. She wears a black dress with a large red bow in the front, and white fluff on the collar and hem.
Personality Watcher has a distant personality, but has a kind disposition towards Niko; if Niko talks to her while the system clock is set to a time between 12 AM and 5:59 AM, she says that Niko shouldn't be up so late.
Trivia Watcher is in her 20s.[1] Her clothes appear to be very similar to those of Imogen (formerly 15), from Margin/Margin Dreams.
The Lamplighter (Plight for short in file names) is the maintenance worker of Refuge. He is mainly tasked to replace the red phosphor found in Refuge's lights. He is the second character that Niko and the Player meet in Refuge. He is an adult with light skin, purple hair with bangs covering his right eye, a faint stubbly beard, and maroon eyes. He wears a patched-up violet coat over a cream-colored shirt, a violet newsboy cap that's just as patched-up, dark violet pants and shoes, and is often seen with his lighting stick strapped on his back. Artworks by Nightmargin occasionally show him also wearing a dark violet scarf.
His small apartment can be found in the Alley. In his apartment, Niko can find the lenses for the photo booth in a cardboard box.
In OneShot: World Machine Edition, the Lamplighter's bio reads:
"A tired-looking man who seems to subsist purely on gallons of coffee. It's unclear how long it's been since the last time he slept. Although he's not the brightest fellow, he's an incredibly hard worker and takes his job very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that he gets anxious whenever he can't perform his duties. He's responsible for keeping the lights around the city lit, as well as delivering highly concentrated phosphor for use in machines.
A high-school dropout, he feels nervous whenever he has to be around smart people. Lately the Lamplighter has taken to reading the dictionary in what little free time he has."
Personality The Lamplighter has a nervous and awkward disposition, often trailing off his sentences. He's a bit self-conscious, and startles easily. He is diligent and very dedicated to his job.
Trivia Nightmargin mentioned in a stream that the Lamplighter is the "designated comic relief character", a sentiment further enforced by some of her drawings.[1] There is a scene in the Solstice update where the Lamplighter nearly swears in front of Niko out of surprise, but he says "fudge" instead, with a pause between the "f" and the rest of the word. This gag is referenced in these stream drawings made by Nightmargin. The Lamplighter is in his mid to late 20s.[2] Nightmargin stated in a stream that she is thinking of naming him Sebastian. She later mentioned it again in a Reddit AMA.
