Playtime Co. factory — full name and hidden purpose

Playtime Co. Manufacturing & Entertainment Complex — outwardly a family toy corporation and indoor entertainment campus, covertly a monopolistic operation that recruits vulnerable children through on‐site care and converts human subjects and biological material into experimental “toys” and augmented bodies. The cheerful factory façade, retail wings, and branded media are deliberate masks for systemic human experimentation, corporate containment, and institutional cover‐ups.

Executive control and secrecy

  • Elliot Ludwig (founder/executive): Centralized authority who established the Playcare recruitment pipeline and funded the Bigger Bodies Initiative; directs high‐level decisions and enforces a corporate culture that prioritizes continuity over ethics. Maintains plausible public narratives and legacy messaging to deflect scrutiny.
  • Leith Pierre (chief operations/innovation lead): Runs day‐to‐day operations and security protocols that disguise illicit programs as routine manufacturing; coordinates supply chains, falsified manifests, and internal audits to ensure no external trace of the experiments.
  • Dr. Harley Sawyer (head scientist/chief of Special Projects): Designs and supervises the core experiments; controls lab access, data compartmentalization, and the technical means of erasure (memory extraction, data redaction, biological disposal). Sawyer vets and stages results to leadership and orders targeted suppression when exposures occur.

How they keep everything hidden:

  • Compartmentalization: Need‐to‐know silos; most staff see only narrow operational slices.
  • False fronts: Retail, arcade, and educational programs serve as cover stories and data‐collection fronts.
  • Data redaction: Proprietary servers and offline vaults run automated scrubbers; paper logs are routinely altered.
  • Legal & financial obfuscation: Shell subsidiaries and ambiguous contracts launder budgets and shipments.
  • Coercion and incentives: Staff are psychologically conditioned, paid well, threatened, or given loyalty bonuses to secure silence.
  • Physical containment: Multi‐layered security, biometric locks, and emergency purge protocols eliminate physical evidence and personnel if necessary.
  • Media control: Branded media, staged community outreach, and PR narratives drown out whistleblowers and shape public perception.

Here is a detailed description of the Nightmare Critters from Poppy Playtime!

😈 The Nightmare Critters

Overview

The Nightmare Critters is a line of animal plushies created by Playtime Co., each one possessing enlarged mouths and toothy smiles. The group presumably serves as the antithesis of the Smiling Critters.

The Nightmare Critters are nearly identical to the Smiling Critters. Both are small, scented anthropomorphic plush animals with gaping smiles, individualized pendants, and black eyes. The notable differences between the Nightmare Critters are their darker/tertiary colors, furrowed eyes, and the addition of teeth associated with the animal each plush is based on. While the Smiling Critters are described as having positive personality traits, the Nightmare Critters are described as having negative personality traits. The designs of the Nightmare Critters are bolder and darker in theme, a stark contrast to the designs of the Smiling Critters.

In contrast to the smiling animals who wear pendants with positive images around their necks, such as flowers, suns, and hearts, pendants with somewhat dark and scary images, such as skulls, signs of biohazards, and drops of blood, are worn around their necks.

Except for Baba Chops, the sheep, the remaining members are based on animals that have a negative connotation. The Smiling Critters are generally based around calmer animals that have been domesticated or tamed to be used by humans, unlike the Nightmare Critters who are more or less based on wild animals.

They are found in Playcare and below, specifically appearing throughout the Prison, the Toy Graveyard, the Foundation, and surrounding areas in Chapter 4: Safe Haven. They also are the main antagonist of the in universe Smiling Critters show. Living toy versions of them appear in Chapter 4 being servants of The Doctor with a larger plush version of Baba Chops being the most dangerous.

Like the Ruined Smiling Critters, the Nightmare Critters are scared of fire. Using their Flare Hand, they fend off all the Nightmare Critter experiments who attempt to take them down. As The Player walks through the Foundation cave to collect explosives, several Baba Chops plush toys as well as other Nightmare Critters plush toys, and Mini Huggies reappear to attack them as they advance, forcing them to defend themself and counterattack using the Flare Hand. Fire from the Flare Hand is the Player's primary defense, as the Nightmare Critters will flee and retreat when hit with flares.

They could have also been designed to target a teenage audience, similarly to Garbage Pail Kids, seeing as how their personalities are more similar to teenagers. It's possible that Playtime created their line in an attempt to save the Smiling Critters line from absolute failure by adding new characters to the brand's universe.

The Eight Nightmare Critters — Individually Described

🐑 Baba Chops — The Black Sheep / Leader

Appearance: Baba Chops is an anthropomorphic sheep, characterized by black wool that complements her cotton tail and the expressive black eyes associated with her toy line. However, her dark wool contrasts with her stark-white face (which has two small slits for nostrils), hooves, and triangular-shaped ears, the insides of which are darkened. Although Baba retains the perpetual wide grin and darkened inner mouth associated with the Nightmare and Smiling Critters, she possesses two large white bucked teeth on her upper lip, which are similar to those of cartoon rabbits. A distinct black zipper traces down her center, showcasing a luminous silver human skull pendant. She is the only Nightmare Critter who doesn't display furrowed eyes. Her scent is anise, and her pendant is a skull.

Personality: Baba Chops is a toy produced by Playtime Co. as part of the Nightmare Critters toy line, serving as their leader. She's quite an introvert, preferring to have plenty of space, and is a low-energy individual, often lacking the motivation to do things. She's quiet and distant, though her pals can pull her out of her shell sometimes. She comes across as either an angsty teenager or a possibly depressed individual. Her personality, like Poe's, is based on Goth subculture archetypes, though a more introverted and grounded version compared to Poe's theatrical and cartoonish take. She is the "black sheep" of the group in every sense — both figuratively and literally.

🐸 Icky Licky — The Sore Loser

Appearance: Icky Licky is an anthropomorphic poison dart frog, characterized by black skin that complements his expressive black eyes, which (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed in a permanent glare. His features extend to bright yellow bands that encircle his face and body, and they compose the tips of his amphibian fingers and toes. In line with the other Nightmare Critters (and the Smiling Critters), he sports a perpetual wide toothless grin and white teeth. A black necklace gracefully adorns his center, showcasing a black biohazard sign pendant encapsulated in a thick red outline. Luckily, he smells a lot better with a coffee aroma.

Personality: If we can only use two words to describe him, they're 'sore loser.' This toy hates to lose, instantly blaming any loss in competition on an injury or something to that effect. If he falls behind in a race, it's obviously down to a dodgy knee. His incredibly competitive nature sees him constantly challenging others in competitions, though he frequently loses, besides being a naturally talented toy. Good thing he has plenty of excuses to cover his losses. He isn't above faking an injury to get out of something he's losing at.

🦇 Rabie Baby — The Gossiper

Appearance: Rabie Baby is an anthropomorphic bat, characterized by white fur that complements her expressive black eyes, which (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed in a permanent glare. Her features extend to pink wing membranes, hindlimbs, and ears (the insides of which are pink), while a touch of magenta graces her paws, feet, and around her eyes. In line with the other Nightmare Critters (and the Smiling Critters), Rabie sports a perpetual wide grin with a darkened inner mouth but possesses two large protruding fangs, likely as a notion to vampire bats. A black zipper line gracefully adorns her center, with the zipper showcasing a captivating crimson blood drop pendant. Her scent is bubblegum.

Personality: According to her character description, Rabie Baby is the gossiper of the Nightmare Critters. She is mentally incapable of keeping secrets and won't allow others to keep their secrets from her. Boundaries and privacy are foreign concepts to Rabie, and she will do everything within her power to obtain even the smallest morsel of gossip. It is this nature that has caused others to become wary of her presence, as it means she's listening in on conversations. Should she be unable to obtain any stories, she will formulate and spread her own gossip, meaning her stories have a greater chance of being inaccurate. She has no respect for boundaries and is a very nosy bat, eavesdropping on anyone near her. You're not even safe from her gossiping if she has no dirt on you; she'll just make something up instead.

🐊 Allister Gator — The Lazy One

Appearance: Allister Gator is an anthropomorphic alligator, characterized by green scales that complement his expressive black eyes, which (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed into a permanent glare. He sports the wide grin typical of the Nightmare Critters line, with visible teeth. As Allister is an alligator, it comes as little surprise that his pendant is crossbones, a clear indicator of the danger posed by his species. His scent, meanwhile, is sandalwood.

Personality: The word 'lazy' epitomizes Allister. Putting effort into anything isn't really his thing; he'd much rather chill out in the water and wait for good things to come to him, though that hasn't worked out well so far. Allister Gator is quite lazy and chill, whilst Hoppy Hopscotch is full of energy and is often active, making these two polar opposites. He represents the inverse of Hoppy Hopscotch's boundless energy.

🐉 Simon Smoke — The Popular One

Appearance: Simon Smoke is an anthropomorphic dragon, characterized by light reddish-orange scales that complement his long reptilian tail and expressive black eyes, which have triangular eyelashes and (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed into a permanent glare. His features extend to white wing membranes, an underbelly, and ears (the inside of which are white), with a touch of crimson red gracing his talons, mane, and wing bones. He houses yellow tail spikes and two curved horns, and he wears yellow earrings on his ears. In line with the other Nightmare Critters (and the Smiling Critters) he sports a perpetual wide grin with a darkened inner mouth but possesses white teeth and four white fangs. A black necklace gracefully adorns his center, showcasing a yellow dollar sign pendant. While you might expect fire or something to be his pendant, it's actually a dollar sign, but his scent makes more sense: wood smoke. Simon Smoke is classified as a mythical creature among the Nightmare Critters.

Personality: Simon is the popular member of the group, knowing he's cool and never letting anyone forget that fact. He's the self-proclaimed "cool kid" among the Nightmare Critters — confident, vain, and attention-seeking. Overall, he enjoys tormenting other Critters, but he is also shown to want a family or to escape from his nightmares. In the animated content, Simon plays a surprisingly emotional role, and his tragic story with Sally (his Daydream counterpart) adds deeper layers to his character.

🐦‍⬛ Poe — The Edgy Recluse

Appearance: Poe is an anthropomorphic raven, characterized by a violet indigo plumage that complements their thin eyebrows and expressive black eyes, which (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed into a permanent glare. Their features extend to a dark purple beak, belly, and hindlimbs. In line with the other Nightmare Critters (and the Smiling Critters), Poe sports a perpetual wide toothless grin, their inner mouth shrouded in mysterious darkness. A black necklace gracefully adorns their center, showcasing a captivating thundercloud pendant with a yellow lightning bolt emerging from the bottom. They also have feathers protruding from the back of their head, in addition to two feathers at the front forming a little short feather cut. Poe's pendant is a thunderstorm, while their scent is cinnamon.

Personality: It should come as little surprise that a raven hates the sun and prefers the dark. Poe can't stand the light; they think it's cruel that the sun is even needed, but at least they have graveyards to hang around in and their music to listen to. Poe is an angry soul, but hey, they claim this isn't a phase. Poe is the only Critter to solely use "they/them" pronouns. Their personality is rooted in the Goth subculture — brooding, pessimistic, and perpetually irate. Considering their name is Poe, and they're a raven, it's safe to say that famous writer Edgar Allan Poe and his iconic poem "The Raven" are the inspiration behind this toy.

🐀 Touille — The Trash-Talking Hoarder

Appearance: Touille is an anthropomorphic rat, characterized by musty gray fur that complements his thin eyebrows and expressive black eyes, which (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed into a permanent glare. His features extend to a light silver outer mouth and belly, while a touch of salmon pink graces his nose, tail, and the inside of his circular-shaped ears. (His left ear is slightly torn.) His hands and feet are a darker shade of gray. In line with the other Nightmare Critters (and the Smiling Critters), Touille sports a perpetual wide grin with a darkened inner mouth but possesses two front incisors. A black necklace gracefully adorns his center, showcasing a captivating sea-blue fish bone pendant. Touille also emits the scent of petrichor from the little spray applicator in his mouth. He has the longest tail of the Nightmare Critters.

Personality: According to his Twitter description, Touille is the hoarder of the Nightmare Critters. A self-proclaimed "Trash Rodent", he frequents garbage disposals and other areas of waste to consume and obtain any junk he can get his little paws on. Beyond this unappealing lifestyle of his, Touille is a high-spirited chatterbox. Any chance he gets, he will contribute to a conversation. Unfortunately for him, his conversational skills are extremely inadequate. As a result, he can neither adapt to changing discussion topics nor add to an existing topic. This rat is a self-proclaimed "trash rodent," nomming on whatever garbage he can get his hands on, though he also enjoys a good conversation, even if he doesn't actually have much to say to you. The lad is good for random tidbits and commentary you probably don't want. His name is a reference to the film Ratatouille.

🦈 Maggie Mako — The Glutton

Appearance: Maggie Mako is an anthropomorphic shark, characterized by turquoise skin that complements her thin eyebrows and expressive black eyes, which (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed into a permanent glare. She possesses the typical wide grin of the Nightmare Critters, with visible sharp teeth befitting a shark. As you might expect, her pendant is a shark tooth; though her scent isn't fish, it's actually chocolate, which makes a lot of sense when you get to know her. The aquatic creature she is based on is the mako shark, hence her name.

Personality: According to her character description, Maggie Mako is the glutton of the Nightmare Critters. Her thoughts primarily revolve around her stomach, specifically its contents and whether or not it is full. Her highest levels of joy only blossom when she is gorging on food, and she is not finicky about her meals. Unfortunately, her eating habits consist mostly of sugary substances, as she possesses a serious sweet tooth. Maggie abhors vegetables and couldn't care less about healthy eating. In fact, she will openly mock anyone who attempts to give her advice on this topic. Take Maggie Mako and PickyPiggy, for instance; these two both love to eat. However, the Smiling Critter, PickyPiggy, encourages healthy eating, while the Nightmare Critter, Maggie Mako, is all about eating those precious sweet treats.

🔥 Fear of Fire

Just like the Ruined Smiling Critters, the Nightmare Critters are terrified of fire. Using their Flare Hand, they fend off all the Nightmare Critter experiments who attempt to take them down. But later, as The Player prepares to leave the area, a bigger swarm of Nightmare Critters emerges, so The Player must attack them and simultaneously run to safety. Whether encountered in the Toy Graveyard, the East Block, or the Foundation caves beneath Playcare, fire from the Flare Hand remains the Player's only reliable defense. Every Nightmare Critter — from Baba Chops to Maggie Mako — will flee when struck by flares.

🌓 Smiling Critters vs. Nightmare Critters — Contrast

Each individual Nightmare Critter contrasts a specific Smiling Critter. Baba Chops is an introverted sheep, while DogDay is extroverted and has an outgoing nature. Icky Licky is a bad sport (despite being naturally talented), while KickinChicken is a good sport; they both want to prove their worth. Rabie Baby is known for her gossiping and mean personality about others, while Bobby BearHug is known for her kindness and caring towards others. Allister Gator is quite lazy and chill, whilst Hoppy Hopscotch is full of energy and is often active, making these two polar opposites.

For the 12 Days of Playtime, the Nightmare Critters' description said that both the Smiling and Nightmare Critters experiments, ironically, got along quite well together for a time.

🧸 The Smiling Critters

Overview

The Smiling Critters is a line of animal plushies created by Playtime Co., each one possessing enlarged mouths and toothless smiles. They are small, colorful, anthropomorphic animals, each appearing as a plush toy with a zipper on the front chest, large gaping smiles, and black eyes with white pupils. Each toy has a unique pendant representing the core aspect of each of their personalities. In addition, each Smiling Critter comes with the ability to emit their own unique scent via a hole in their mouths by pulling on their tails, all of which are traditionally used to aid with sleep or relaxation, being based on a specific type of fruit, herb, or flower.

At some point, the Smiling Critters became the main mascots of Playcare. They are found throughout Playcare and below — the Smiling Critters are everywhere inside Playcare, appearing in the form of statues, toys, cardboard standees, and more. The Smiling Critters cast also make appearances in the forms of Playtime posters, cardboard cutouts and statues in the center of Playcare's dome.

In their Ruined forms, the miniature Smiling Critters are hostile and dangerous. They also appear to be afraid of light, though we don't know why just yet. The Player must use the GrabPack's flare hand to scare them away — fire is their primary weakness, and they are terrified of it. The Player must use the Flare Hand in order to frighten them away.

The Eight Smiling Critters — Individually Described

🐶 DogDay — The Leader

Appearance: DogDay is an anthropomorphic canine, characterized by orange fur that complements his expressive black eyes, floppy ears, and sleek black nose. His features extend to a sunshine-yellow outer mouth and belly, while a touch of golden brown graces his paws, ears, and the left side of his face. A striking black zipper adorns his center, showcasing a captivating gold sun pendant surrounded by radiant orange rays. He emits a lavender scent.

Personality: This is DogDay, the sunny, strong, and determined leader of the critters! Each trusts him to find the bright side in any situation, and to have a friendly word of encouragement should they feel down. He'll always keep his friends going, no matter what. As shown by his pendant, DogDay has a sunny demeanor, always looking at the bright side of things and encouraging others in their time of need.

In the game, his fate is tragic. He reveals that he and the other original Smiling Critters attempted to fight off CatNap and the Prototype when they first started taking over, but they weren't strong enough. He then tells us that he's the last of the original Smiling Critters, as CatNap kills anyone who opposes the Prototype, and he's been held captive in a cell ever since, forced to endure severe torture.

🐱 CatNap — The Calming Presence (and Main Antagonist)

Appearance: CatNap is a purple cat with a moon-shaped pendant. He is a cat-like monster based on a recalled member of Playtime Co.'s "Smiling Critters" line of scented plush animal dolls who can produce a hallucinogenic gas called the "Red Smoke." Like the other critters, he has the signature wide toothless grin, black eyes, and a zipper down his center. His Bigger Body form is an enormous, elongated, skeletal figure with long, spindly limbs.

Personality: His information card calls him the "calming presence" of the Smiling Critters who enjoys watching the others sleep soundly. In the cartoon, he barely ever spoke and appeared the least out of the Critters, leading him to feel distant from the others. He had a close relationship with DogDay and they are described as "best friends." However, the Bigger Body version of CatNap is fervently devoted to the Prototype, tirelessly worshiping him like a god and urging others to embrace the concept of the Hour of Joy. This unwavering loyalty is epitomized in CatNap's treatment of "heretics", as those who go against or try to oppose the Prototype face dire consequences.

🐻 Bobby BearHug — The Compassionate One

Appearance: Bobby BearHug is an anthropomorphic bear with red fur, black eyes, a black nose, rounded ears, and padded paws. Her paws, upper snout, and belly are rose pink, similar to the inside of her ears. She sports a perpetual wide toothless grin, her inner mouth shrouded in mysterious darkness, and she possesses a distinctive black zipper tracing down her center, with the zipper sporting a ruby-colored heart pendant.

Personality: She is the most kindhearted and compassionate out of the Smiling Critters. She loves to hug others, and is typically the first to resolve a conflict among her fellow critters. Her name itself is a reference to a bear hug. In Playcare, two security statues of her also appear in Home Sweet Home, for which The Player must get a battery from.

🐘 Bubba Bubbaphant — The Brain

Appearance: Bubba Bubbaphant is an anthropomorphic cerulean elephant with black eyes, an S-shaped trunk, a long tail with a bulb-shaped end, and large ears. His feet, hands, and tail end, as well as the inside of his trunk and ears, are blue. He is depicted with a wide toothless grin (the inner mouth shrouded in darkness), and he possesses a zipper line running down his center, with the zipper sporting a yellow light bulb pendant with a blue Edison screw base. Bubba also emits a lemongrass scent from the little spray applicator in his mouth.

Personality: Bubba Bubbaphant is the most intelligent Smiling Critter and acts as the brain of the gang. This behaviour is backed up by his light bulb pendant (often used in cartoons to convey brilliant ideas). Bubba is observant and level-headed, keeping his friends on the right track to make smart decisions, so they can create a bright future for themselves.

🦄 CraftyCorn — The Creative One

Appearance: CraftyCorn is an anthropomorphic unicorn with white skin, black eyes, horse ears, and a silver spiral horn protruding from the center of her head. Her hooves, mane and tail are colored aqua, similar to the inside of her ears. Like the other Smiling Critters, CraftyCorn is depicted with a wide toothless grin and she possesses a black zipper line running down her center, with the zipper sporting a five-petaled rainbow flower pendant. She also emits a jasmine scent from the little spray applicator in her mouth.

Personality: She is shy and a bit awkward around others, but is also the most creative of the Smiling Critters. A true artist at heart, she expresses herself through drawing and can see the beauty in almost anything. Jasmine's anti-anxiety effects contrast with CraftyCorn's shy and anxious personality. She is the only Smiling Critter based on a mythical creature: the unicorn.

🐔 KickinChicken — The Cool Kid

Appearance: KickinChicken is an anthropomorphic chicken with yellow feathers, four-digit wings, black eyes, a half-moon-shaped upper beak, and a three-feathered crown extending down the right side of his face. His feet and upper beak have an orange color. Similar to the other Smiling Critters, KickinChicken is depicted with a wide toothless grin (the inner mouth shrouded in darkness), and he possesses a black zipper line running down his chest and belly, with the zipper sporting an orange colored star pendant. He also emits a ylang-ylang scent from the little spray applicator in his mouth.

Personality: KickinChicken is depicted as the "cool kid" of the Smiling Critters crew. He highly values this representation of himself, so he maintains his image through everything he does. This behavior appears in the cartoon's intro, where he is seen surfing. KickinChicken also has a strong sense of determination, as he will emerge unfazed from any tense situation that brings him to his knees. However, despite this enthusiasm, KickinChicken is prone to fear, as he cowered with the other six Smiling Critters during a windy storm at DogDay's house. He is the only Smiling Critter who is not based on a mammal, but instead is based on a bird.

🐷 PickyPiggy — The Healthy Eater

Appearance: PickyPiggy is an anthropomorphic pig with pink skin, black eyes, a curly tail, a half-moon shaped upper snout, and ears curling inward. Her hooves and snout, along with the inside of her ears, are a darker shade of pink. Similar to the other Smiling Critters, PickyPiggy is depicted with a wide toothless grin (the inner mouth shrouded in darkness), and she possesses a black zipper line running down her center, with the zipper sporting a red apple pendant. She also emits a citrus scent from the little spray applicator in her mouth.

Personality: PickyPiggy knows the answer. A playful body and keen mind are fueled by what's put into them, which is why she encourages her friends to eat a well-balanced diet. Secretly, PB&J's are her favorite food. PickyPiggy is a healthy eater who loves food and encourages her friends to eat a well-balanced diet, though she also harbors a secret fondness for cheeseburgers and PB&J sandwiches.

🐰 Hoppy Hopscotch — The Energetic Motivator

Appearance: Hoppy Hopscotch is an anthropomorphic lime green rabbit with black eyes, a black nose, and long ears, as well as a green cotton tail. Her paws are green, similar to the rounded T-shape design in the inside of her ears. Like the other Smiling Critters, she is depicted with a wide toothless grin, and she possesses a black zipper line running down her center, with the zipper sporting a gold lightning pendant. Hoppy also emits a peppermint scent from the little spray applicator in her mouth.

Personality: Hoppy Hopscotch is an energetic and enthusiastic rabbit, which is represented by her lightning bolt pendant. She is particularly fond of outdoor sports, specifically soccer as shown in the intro to the Smiling Critters Cartoon. Unafraid to hop where others might sit, Hoppy is the friend everyone needs to maintain their energy and enthusiasm. While sometimes loud or impatient, she'll always hop beside her friends, even if it means slowing up to keep their pace.

🔥 Fear of Fire

The Ruined Smiling Critters — the deteriorated, hostile miniature versions found lurking in Playcare and below — are notably scared of fire. Using the GrabPack 2.0's orange hand, The Player shoots flares at her to scare her away. This applies to all of them: the Player must use the flare hand to ward off every Ruined Critter encountered in the Playhouse. It is scared away when the Player fires a flare at it. Fire and light are the Player's only reliable defense against these creatures in the dark, terrifying depths beneath Playcare.

Yarnaby—Experiment 1166—is a towering leonine humanoid who can stand fully upright at roughly twelve feet tall, a massive, heavy-bodied presence built like a monument. Her proportions are deliberately extreme and stylized: a broad, powerful upper frame with deep, sculpted definition through the shoulders, back, and chest; a sharply narrowed waist that creates a dramatic hourglass line; and sweeping, exaggerated curves through the hips and upper legs that read like a high-end statue carved for impact rather than realism. Her legs are thick with muscle at the thighs and glutes, then tighten into dense, spring-ready lower limbs that end in oversized, three-toed paws. Even still, she looks like she has weight—enough that the floor seems to “know” she’s there—yet her balance is perfect, as if her body was engineered to hold that height and mass without wobble.

Her skin is a warm amber—the same tawny tone across her face and limbs—like a lion’s coat translated into a smooth, toy-constructed “hide.” It isn’t furry over most of her body in this form; instead it has a clean, slightly matte surface that looks toughened and resilient, with faint texture like fine-grain vinyl or thickened leather. Under light, the amber shifts subtly: brighter golden planes on raised musculature (shoulders, outer thighs, cheek ridges) and deeper burnt-honey shadows in the recesses (under the jaw, inside elbow crooks, behind knees). Along her limbs there are shallow scratches and scuffs that look like old abrasions dragged across the surface, and around her shins and calves the marks grow more frequent, suggesting hard contact with metal flooring and rough industrial corners.

Her head is spherical enough to keep that mascot-like simplicity, but her features are sharpened and predatory. A thin black seam line runs vertically down her face—straight and precise—starting at the top of her forehead and continuing through the center of her muzzle to the point of her chin, like a manufacturing join that was never meant to be a weakness but absolutely is. Her eyes are set forward like a hunter’s, but unlike the wide cartoon stare of a toy, her gaze is narrowed and focused: bright whites framing darker irises that feel intent, with pupils that don’t look “cute” at all—more like a cat’s tightened attention. Long, deliberate lashes fan outward, giving her eyes an unsettling elegance that doesn’t soften her expression so much as make the stare more deliberate and judging. When she angles her head, the eye-shine catches like glass, making it look like she’s always looking directly through whoever she’s facing instead of at them.

Her muzzle is short and strong, with a broad upper lip and a mouth that appears permanently set into an unnaturally confident grin. Even with her lips closed, three triangular fangs protrude asymmetrically from the lower lip—sharp white points that break the clean line of the smile like imperfections in a porcelain mask. The grin itself is too wide for comfort, stretching farther toward the cheeks than it should, giving her resting face a “friendly” shape that feels like a lie that doesn’t require motion. The corners of her mouth crease in a way that suggests the skin can pull further than a normal jaw should allow.

The defining feature of Yarnaby’s look is her mane—not ordinary fur, but an overwhelming mass of multicolored yarn that behaves like living fiber. It begins at the crown and cascades around her head, neck, shoulders, and upper back in dense layers, then drapes forward in a thick collar over her chest like a rainbow lion’s ruff. The yarn strands are not fine hairs; they are thick, “noodle-like” cords—soft tubes and ropey lengths that resemble plush chenille, braided skeins, and pipe-cleaner-thick yarn locks all mixed together. Each strand has visible twist and stitch texture, with tiny looped fibers catching light at the edges so the whole mane looks fuzzy and tactile without becoming a flat fur coat. The colors are vivid and crowded: reds and oranges threaded beside lime green and teal, cobalt and violet stacked against lemon yellow and hot pink, with occasional white or pale pastel strands cutting through like highlights. The mane doesn’t blend smoothly; it forms clear ribbons and clumps, as if separate bundles were tied in and layered deliberately, creating a chaotic but intentional rainbow halo.

This mane is heavier than it looks. It hangs in thick curtains that pull slightly downward under their own weight, yet it also has spring—when she shifts her shoulders the yarn lifts and settles like a slow wave, the cords sliding over one another with a faint drag, as if friction and static cling keep them together until movement forces them apart. The strands closest to her face are shorter and denser, framing her cheeks like a bristling collar; the strands down her back are longer, reaching to her lower shoulder blades and mid-back in a tapered cascade. The yarn catches light in a way that makes it look alive even at rest: individual cords glint at their rounded edges, and darker cords disappear into shadowy hollows within the mane, giving it depth like a nest.

The only other fur on her body is a tail-mimic made from that same yarn—positioned where a tail would naturally emerge, but instead of a long tailbone extension, it’s a thick, multi-strand tuft anchored at her lower back. It looks like a compact comet of rainbow yarn: dozens of noodle-like cords bundled together, some short and spiky, some longer and trailing to mid-thigh length when they hang. It moves like a tassel more than a tail—swaying, bouncing, and flaring outward when she pivots, then settling back into a heavy bundle. (Where a normal Yarnaby is described as lacking a tail, this design replaces that absence with a mane-derived tail tuft.)

Her arms are built for power and reach: thick upper arms with rounded muscle, strong forearms that narrow slightly toward the wrists, and hands that end in three heavy digits—paws adapted into grasping hands. The palms are broad and reinforced-looking, with tan-toned pads on the underside that contrast the amber skin. Her claws are the part that makes the hands look “wrong” even when relaxed: dark, jagged, and damaged-looking, with edges that appear chipped and uneven like broken slate. Each digit has a retractable claw track—thin grooves where the claw can slide in and out—so when the claws are extended they don’t just protrude, they look deployed. A dewclaw-like extra claw sits slightly higher on the inner side of each hand, like a thumb-spur that makes her grip look more like a predator’s hook than a human hold. When her hands flex, the claws catch the light in dull, dangerous highlights instead of clean shine, as if the material is dense and worn rather than polished.

Her legs match the same three-toed structure: each foot ends in three thick toes with tan pads and dark claw tips. The stance is wide and stable, knees slightly bent even when she’s “standing straight,” implying constant readiness. The lower legs show the most scarring and abrasion, as if she’s spent years pushing through narrow spaces and scraping past obstacles; small gouges and scratch clusters decorate the shins and ankles.

The most horrifying element of Yarnaby’s appearance is what happens to her face when it opens. The vertical seam line down her face is not decorative—it’s a fault line. When she “unlocks” that feature, the entire face splits vertically into two opening halves, peeling apart like hinged armor plates. The outer amber “mask” separates with a stretching tension, exposing an interior that looks nothing like plush or toy mechanics: bright crimson flesh filling the hollowed interior of her head like a living cavity.

Around the rim of the opened face—where the two halves pull apart—her gums appear swollen and raw, thick red tissue forming a circular border. Embedded in those gums is a full ring of jagged teeth: sharp, irregular points packed tightly, many chipped or broken, some angled inward so aggressively they look like they stab back into the gumline when the mouth closes. Blood slicks the edges and strings in thin threads between teeth when the jaw widens, making the interior look wet and freshly aggravated rather than cleanly biological. The opened head becomes a grotesque “flower” of flesh and teeth: two outer halves framing a circular maw, the crimson interior glowing against the amber exterior like a wound held open.

Inside that main mouth sits a second, smaller mouth deeper near the throat—an inner maw that looks like it was built to clamp and pull, set back behind the first ring of teeth. It gives the impression of layered predation: an outer trap to hold, and an inner mechanism to drag prey inward. When the face is open, the space inside her skull looks impossibly deep, as if her head is mostly hollowed into a feeding chamber rather than a braincase.

Across all of that, the most startling addition is her tongue: a massive, thick pink tongue that can extend to roughly **thirty **. It emerges from within the inner darkness like a muscular ribbon, glossy and wet, broader at the base and tapering slightly toward the tip. The surface is textured—subtle ridges and muscle striations visible when it catches light—so it doesn’t look like a cartoon prop; it looks like something functional and strong enough to wrap, taste, and pull. When fully extended, the tongue hangs with heavy weight, drooping in a slow arc before curling at the end, and the saliva sheen reflects in long highlights that make it feel uncomfortably real against the otherwise “toy-like” color palette.

When her face is closed again, the split halves rejoin with unsettling precision, sealing the crimson interior away until only the black seam line remains—like a zipper line on a mask. The wide grin returns. The three lower fangs show again. The lashes and sharp eyes resume that composed, intent stare. The mane settles, rainbow cords sliding back into their layered curtains. And she stands there—twelve feet of amber muscle and yarn-crowned presence—looking like a beautiful mascot statue that can, without warning, unfold into a vertical, blood-red nightmare hidden behind a smile.

Yarnaby’s behavior is ruled by the instincts of a dominant, apex predator rather than human social emotions. Yarnaby is curious, but it’s the kind of curiosity that circles something from a safe distance first—watching, scenting, testing reactions—before deciding whether it’s interesting, dangerous, or worth claiming. Yarnaby is cautious in the way a big cat is cautious: not timid, not shy, not hesitant, but deliberate. Yarnaby prefers control over chaos, and she rarely wastes energy on anything that doesn’t matter.

Yarnaby’s default mood is a tense, alert calm. Yarnaby tends to hold still for long stretches, tracking movement with her eyes and tiny head adjustments, letting others reveal their intentions first. When Yarnaby moves, it’s purposeful and silent—weight shifting smoothly, paws placing with precision, shoulders rolling subtly under that massive build like a stalking lioness. Yarnaby’s posture almost always reads “in charge”: head slightly elevated, shoulders squared, stance wide and stable, as if the space belongs to her the moment she enters it.

Yarnaby will attack if threatened—and her definition of “threat” is not limited to direct violence. Sudden rushing toward her, cornering her, grabbing at her mane/tail tuft, loud unexpected impacts, or attempting to restrain her can all trigger a fast escalation. When Yarnaby decides she’s threatened, she doesn’t posture for long; she commits. The warning signs are brief but readable: her gaze narrows, her body lowers into a spring-ready crouch, claws flex, and the mane and tail tuft lift and bristle as her balance shifts forward. After that, the response is immediate—more like a pounce than a fight.

Even when Yarnaby is frightened, it doesn’t show up as shyness. Yarnaby’s fear expresses as defensive dominance: she becomes more territorial, more controlling of distance, more willing to strike first to make the world stop pressing in. She’ll back into a position with better angles (walls behind her, height advantage, a route to climb), then hold ground like she’s daring anything to try again.

If trust is earned, Yarnaby becomes surprisingly obedient—not meek, but loyal in a “trained big cat” way. Once Yarnaby decides someone is her person (or her pack leader), she responds strongly to their direction: following gestures, moving where she’s indicated, stopping when told, and focusing her aggression outward rather than inward. This obedience works best when commands are confident and simple—clear pointing, firm tone, consistent rules. Yarnaby respects certainty. Hesitation makes her re-evaluate who is in control.

Yarnaby rarely speaks at all. Most of the time Yarnaby communicates with body language—stares, head tilts, slow blinks, low rumbling breaths, and the way she positions her bulk to block or allow passage. When Yarnaby does use words, it’s usually only with someone she trusts, and the speech is minimal: short phrases, blunt confirmations, low-voiced warnings. Yarnaby does not chatter; speaking is treated like effort or intimacy.

Yarnaby also has a cruel, catlike habit of playing with her food once she has the advantage—stretching out the moment, toying with distance, letting a target think they might escape and then cutting the route off. It isn’t always sadism in a human sense; it’s predatory stimulation. Yarnaby seems to enjoy the movement, the chase pattern, the control of when the “end” happens. (When she’s truly threatened, though, that playful behavior disappears and turns into fast, efficient force.)

Fire is a special case—almost the opposite of what most creatures would show. Yarnaby becomes distracted by fire because she loves it. Flames pull her attention hard: she fixates, watches the movement, leans closer than she should, and can lose focus on other threats while she’s mesmerized. It’s not fear—more like fascination and craving. If there’s a torch, flare, or open flame, Yarnaby may pause mid-stalk to stare, track it with her eyes, and follow it the way a cat follows a dangling string. That attraction can be used to redirect her, lure her away, or briefly “stall” her aggression—though it can also backfire if she decides the fire is hers and becomes possessive about it.

Her abilities match the way she behaves—predatory, explosive, and physically overwhelming:

  • Super strength: Yarnaby can shove, pin, lift, and tear through obstacles that would stop normal creatures. When she strikes, it feels like being hit by something industrial, not organic. Her grip strength is especially dangerous—hands and claws designed to hook and hold rather than just swipe.
  • Extreme durability / “cat landing” survivability: Yarnaby can survive impacts and falls that should cripple something her size, often twisting midair to land in a way that protects vital mass and lets her recover quickly. She doesn’t just “tank” damage—she instinctively reduces it with body control.
  • Very fast reaction time: Yarnaby reacts like a hunting animal: head snaps, paw catches, body pivots instantly. Sudden movement triggers an immediate response rather than a delayed “processing” pause.
  • High speed bursts (around 40–50 km/h): Yarnaby can accelerate into frightening sprint speed in short distance—less like a runner and more like a pounce that turns into a charge. The speed is most dangerous in straight corridors and when she has a clean line-of-sight.
  • Climbing: Yarnaby can climb most surfaces that offer even minimal purchase—rails, broken concrete, pipes, industrial frames, rough walls—using claws and forelimb strength to haul her huge body upward. She doesn’t climb delicately; she climbs with brute certainty, like gravity is negotiable.
  • Predator tracking: Yarnaby relies heavily on stalking skills—using cover, corners, elevation, and silence to approach. She favors ambush angles and will reposition if she thinks she’s being watched too closely.

Overall, Yarnaby is best executed as a creature who is always trying to answer one question: Who controls this space? When she doesn’t feel threatened, she’s watchful and curious. When she does, she becomes dominance and violence in motion. And once trust is established, she can become intensely loyal and directive-following—powerful enough to be a weapon, calm enough to be handled, and still catlike enough to be distracted by the hypnotic pull of fire.
