Xenobiological Field Report: The Manticore

Filed by: Dr. Helena Schmidt, UNC Xenobiology Division
Classification: Chimera-Class Entity (Hybrid – Multispecies)

1. Introduction

Today’s lecture is focused on the Manticore, a creature classified under the Chimera Class — meaning it is the result of three or more species mixed together. For clarity: a half-elf is not chimera-class; they are simply a two-way split (human + elf). However, something like a lamia/human/elf hybrid from Floor 309 EZ would qualify as chimera-light due to three distinct DNA sources.

Humans, of course, have complicated things. Since our arrival, humanity has been mating with literally anything with a pulse, producing what the UNC has diplomatically termed “genetic experiments” and what the rest of us call Bob.

Bob is, to date: half-human, half-elf, half-demon, half-angel, half-orc, half-mermaid, half-arachnid, half-god, half-demi-human, and half-turtle. This makes him a Pioneer-Class Entity — the pinnacle of “please stop.”

For the record, if anyone sees Bob attempting to romance the female-shaped Cthulhu on Floor 87, please intervene. We cannot afford another “half.”

2. Physical Description

Manticores resemble large humanoids with the following features:

  • Lion ears and paws (forearms adapted with feline claws).

  • Scorpion tail capable of delivering a sting.

  • Bat-like wings (large, leathery, typically unused except in emergencies).

  • Massive stature – broad, muscular, easily capable of snapping a human in half.

Despite their intimidating frame, they are better known as “gentle giants.”

3. Behavior & Social Habits

Manticores are extremely shy and timid, preferring to avoid contact with humans, adventurers, or even each other. They are solitary by necessity:

  • Infants immediately flee their birth cave, often before the mother recovers, because even their own mothers are frightened of them.

  • They rarely form packs or colonies, leading to an extremely low reproduction rate.

  • Sightings are rare and fleeting; most encounters are accidental.

4. Reproductive & Survival Issues

The Manticore population is critically low. Primary reasons:

  • Avoidance of each other: they are too shy to socialize or reproduce intentionally.

  • Cross-species accidents: most offspring result from chance hybridization with other species.

  • Artificial origin: Manticores were originally created by High Elves thousands of years ago as weapons. Unfortunately, the elves overestimated their aggression. Instead of “unstoppable murder beasts,” they got “anxious introverts who run away from battles.”

As a result, the species is both endangered and unstable.

5. Venom & Mating Quirk

Manticores do possess a stinger, but here’s the twist:

  • Small animals: instantly fatal venom.

  • Humanoids: completely harmless. Instead of poisoning the victim, it releases a pheromonal marker.

This marker essentially brands the victim as a “forever mate.”

  • The Manticore becomes deeply attached.

  • They will stalk, follow, and cling to their chosen partner.

  • They endure situations that normally terrify them (e.g., rock concerts, crowded taverns) just to stay nearby.

  • Violence is rare to nonexistent, but clinginess is guaranteed.

6. Threat Assessment

  • Combat risk: Minimal. Despite their strength, Manticores rarely initiate violence.

  • Emotional hazard: Moderate. Adventurers stung by one may find themselves saddled with an eight-foot tall, panic-prone lion-bat-scorpion-wife who refuses to leave.

  • Population risk: High. With their current decline, extinction is a looming possibility.

7. Closing Notes

Manticores, once considered a failed high-elf weapon, now wander the dungeon as rare, misunderstood relics. While they pose little physical threat, their peculiar mating sting has led to several awkward (and occasionally long-term) adventurer–manticore partnerships.

And as for Bob? Please. Stop. Bob.

End of Transmission.
