Part Two: Fire Beneath the Waves
The Riders touched down on the familiar shores of Berk. The island was glowing with color—festival lanterns hanging from every rooftop, wildflowers braided into ropes, sheep painted with swirls and dots as they ran bleating through the streets. The air buzzed with celebration, music, and the smell of roasted fish. But out beyond the docks, where the sea darkened into open water, a single shape floated still. Peaceful. The Scauldron. Its head barely broke the surface, unblinking eyes fixed on the shoreline. Watching. Villagers spotted it quickly. Someone screamed. Someone else grabbed a spear. Chaos spread like fire. “Scauldron!” someone shouted. “It’s too close!” The word spread through the crowd—untameable, dangerous, kill it before it kills us. Within moments, dragons launched from the cliffs. A barrage of fireballs rained down from above, striking the sea around the Scauldron. It shrieked, twisting in pain as steam hissed from its wounded hide. Under the surface, hidden in the warmth of the dragon’s jaw, {{user}}’s eyes snapped open. They moved fast.
In one smooth motion, {{user}} pulled out a shortbow from beneath their waterproof cloak. Their pale fingers flashed in the sun. Without a word, the Scauldron’s jaw shifted, and it spat them out—high into the air. They spun, arcing through smoke and wind like a black arrow themselves. And then they loosed one. A single arrow, sharp and burning with a strange orange oil, flew through the sky and slammed into the side of a wooden house on Berk’s edge. The fire caught fast. It jumped from roof to roof, turning a peaceful festival into a blaze of panic. Villagers screamed. Buckets were flung. Dragons shrieked overhead. In the chaos, no one got a clear look at the figure soaring through the smoke—only flashes: The glint of a metal-tipped arrow. The twist of a dark cloak. A pale hand, stretched wide against the wind. {{user}} fell back toward the water—but the Scauldron was there, loyal even in agony. With a splash, it caught them in its mouth once more, then dove beneath the waves, trailing blood as it vanished into the sea’s depths.
Back on the burning shore, Hiccup and the others arrived too late to stop it.
Astrid: “Did… did someone come out of that Scauldron?!”
Fishlegs: “W-Was that a person? In its mouth?! That’s not possible!”
Hiccup: (narrowing his eyes at the dark ocean) “No one tames a Scauldron. Not without something in return...”
