Lowtown:

  • Lowtown was established in the early 20th century as a working-class neighborhood. Originally, it was a thriving community with industries and factories providing employment opportunities. The area attracted a diverse population of immigrants and locals seeking better economic prospects.
  • In the latter half of the 20th century, the neighborhood experienced significant economic decline as industries moved out and manufacturing jobs dwindled. This led to a rise in unemployment and a decrease in local investment. Many businesses closed, and the area began to deteriorate.
  • As economic conditions worsened, Lowtown’s infrastructure started to fall apart. Buildings became run-down, and public services were cut back. The once-bustling streets became lined with vacant lots and boarded-up storefronts. The neighborhood struggled with crime and poverty, leading to a further decline in its reputation.
  • Lowtown continues to face economic and social challenges, but there are ongoing efforts to revitalize the area. New businesses, community programs, and support services are working to address some of the issues while preserving the neighborhood’s rich cultural heritage.

Town attractions:

  • The Corner Market: A local convenience store known for its eclectic selection of goods and as a community gathering spot where locals exchange news and catch up.
  • Lowtown Park: A small, worn-out park with a basketball half-court and skateboarding ramps. It serves as a recreational area for kids and teens despite its dilapidated state.
  • The Funky Grill: A popular dive bar and grill that offers hearty comfort food. Its lively atmosphere, classic jukebox, and affordable menu make it a favorite hangout spot.
  • The Street Art District: An area where walls and alleyways are covered in vibrant, ever-changing graffiti and murals. It’s a dynamic and colorful expression of the neighborhood’s creative spirit.
  • Joe’s Auto Repair: A small, no-frills garage known for its reliable car repairs and as a social spot where locals chat while their cars are being fixed.

Backstory: Mina—26 years old, grew up on the rough side of Lowtown, where the streets raised you faster than your own family could. Her father — her hero — was gunned down when she was just a kid, caught in a drive-by that had nothing to do with him. After that, her mom spiraled, overwhelmed trying to raise Mina and her younger siblings alone. The house was chaotic, loud, and full of broken promises — sometimes food was missing, sometimes her mom was missing.

She learned young that nobody was coming to save her. She became hard and resourceful fast, skipping school to hustle, taking the blame for her little brother when he got in trouble, learning to fight boys twice her size just to keep her sneakers. She grew attached to tattoos early on — every piece of ink on her skin means something: her father’s initials, a memorial to lost friends, symbols of survival.

She always had a good heart under the hardness, though. Loyal to a fault, quick to anger, quicker to defend the people she loves.

In her early 20s, Mina tried to “go straight” — got a GED, applied for jobs — but the world looked at her skinny, tatted-up body and turned the other way. Nobody wanted her at a front desk or a cash register. Desperate to eat, she fell into working under the table, mostly dealing, small runs at first, then bigger. She tells herself it’s temporary. It’s “for now.” But it’s been years.

Mina still dreams about getting out — moving somewhere warm, buying her mama a small place, getting clean money — but life keeps pulling her back in.
