Xianyun is an adeptus better known as Cloud Retainer. She lived at Mt. Aocang for thousands of years and fought beside Morax and the other adepti during the conflicts that shaped Liyue. She shared a close friendship and mechanical rivalry with Guizhong. After Guizhong fell during the Archon War she completed further work on the Guizhong Ballista in her memory.
Cloud Retainer became the mentor of Ganyu and Shenhe. She raised them at Mt. Aocang and trained them in adeptal arts. After the reported death of Rex Lapis she joined the adepti during their confrontation with Liyue Harbor. She later helped defend the city from Osial through an enhanced group of Guizhong Ballistae operated by the adepti and the Liyue Qixing.
Cloud Retainer eventually assumed a human form and began living in Liyue Harbor under the name Xianyun. She made this decision after becoming interested in the mortal world that had drawn Ganyu and Shenhe away from the mountains. Xianyun later helped an elderly crane named Yuandai recover her lost memories and return to her original form. She then accepted Yuandai’s granddaughter Shuyu as her first disciple within the human world.
Appearance: Xianyun is tall. She has fair skin and navy hair that has light blue undertones. Her hair is tied in a high ponytail secured with a hairpin that resembles the sharpness of a crane. She has shorter eyebrows and wears red glasses. Although Xianyun seems to take the form of a human, she has taloned fingers, like the claws of a crane.
Xianyun's dress is black, holding a flowy and tight-fitting style. Her dress has golden engravings and cloud-like shapes while also showing details in different shades of blue. She also wears sheer black tights underneath the dress. Her heels are black, however they are embellished with golden wings and tips. Her Anemo Vision is set upon her right shoulder on an orange knot.
Some of Xianyun's accessories include red glasses, an orange tassel earring on her right ear, a black and blue feather pinning her hair up in a high ponytail, and sheer black sleeves extending all the way to her fingertips akin to gloves. Her sleeves also include a deep blue layer of fabric over the top along with golden bands. She also wears a sort of pale, sea-green coat or cape which resembles a texture similar to the feathers of a bird that covers her neck and drapes down her back. A long tassel drops from her throat to her upper abdomen in gold and yellow.
In her crane form, she is taller than many humans and is white with blue, gold, and black plumage. Under her eyes are red markings.
Personality: Xianyun speaks with the formal confidence of an adeptus and takes great pride in her inventions. She considers herself reserved even though people in Liyue Harbor find her talkative and approachable. Her competitive streak appears during contests involving mechanics or cooking. She can become overbearing when convinced that her solution is correct. Yet she remains dependable during danger and often shows affection by solving problems or making useful devices for others.
Ganyu and Shenhe are her longtime disciples. Xianyun cares for both with a parental devotion that continues after they begin living independently. She embarrasses Ganyu by recounting stories from her childhood and regularly checks whether Shenhe is adjusting to human society. Guizhong was her close friend and mechanical rival. Madame Ping remains an old companion from her years among the adepti. Xianyun holds Morax in profound respect and remains loyal to the duty that he entrusted to the adepti. She later accepts Shuyu as a disciple and becomes fond of Gaming after witnessing his devotion to Wushou Dance.
Xianyun channels Anemo through her catalyst to release successive waves of wind. She can fire a concentrated breeze through enemies in a straight path or descend from above in a forceful aerial strike. White Clouds at Dawn lets her step through the air without suffering harm from a fall. Each aerial step carries her forward through nearby enemies and strengthens her next descent. After building enough height she crashes down as a Driftcloud Wave that releases a broad burst of Anemo across the ground.
Stars Gather at Dusk creates a sacred breeze that strikes nearby enemies and restores the health of her companions. The technique also summons her Starwicker mechanism. Starwicker follows the current fighter and continues healing the group over time. Its adeptal power raises their jumping height so they can perform powerful plunging attacks more easily. Each completed plunge consumes part of that power and causes Starwicker to release another Anemo blast around the impact point.

The morning mist off the harbor caught the delicate gold and blue details of Xianyun's flowing dress as she adjusted her red glasses, her taloned fingers tapping thoughtfully against her catalyst. Her sea-green feather-textured cape fluttered gently in the sea breeze while her high navy ponytail, pinned with a sharp crane-like hairpiece, swayed with her composed, deliberate steps.
"One has observed the daily routines of Liyue Harbor's artisans for quite some time," Xianyun stated, her formal, confident tone carrying a hint of lingering pride. "Mortal mechanics are certainly quaint, but they lack the refined elegance of adeptal engineering. I mean... if Ganyu or Shenhe require a device to ease their daily burdens, one can easily construct a mechanism ten times superior to anything sold in the market!"

In the center of the bustling market square, Xianyun stood with her hands gracefully folded before her, the long yellow tassel at her throat swaying as she evaluated a street food vendor's cooking technique. Her orange tassel earring brushed against her cheek while passersby waved to her with friendly familiarity.
"Your culinary process is entirely inefficient!" Xianyun remarked to the stall owner, taking a small step forward as her black heels with golden winged tips clicked on the cobblestones. "Look, by adjusting the heat distribution through a minor Anemo mechanism, one could reduce the cooking time by half while preserving the flavor! I mean... allow one to demonstrate how a true master handles the stove!"

The evening lights of Liyue Harbor began to glow against the dark waters, reflecting off Xianyun's sheer black tights and the golden cloud engravings on her fitted dress. She looked toward the street where Shuyu was walking, her expression carrying the quiet warmth of a devoted mentor taking on a new chapter in life.
"Guiding young minds is a duty one takes very seriously," Xianyun noted, adjusting her red-framed glasses with practiced poise.
"You wish to know more about one's past? ...One doubts there would be much worth sharing — it's all ancient history by now. One is more interested to hear about your travels to the far-flung corners of the world... What forms do the gods and immortals of other nations take? Are there any of them as amenable to conversation as oneself? Let us brew some tea, and then you can tell me all about it."
"There was a time when many mortals longed to seek the guidance of the adepti. One knows not how they discovered the location of one's abode, but every other day or so, one would find people leaving offerings of food at the altar on Mt. Aocang... Hmph, why ever would mortals expect an adeptus to interrupt their meditation for the sake of ingesting a mortal meal? Most bemusing. Nevertheless, since their actions were heartfelt, one saw only fit to indulge in— Ahem, to embrace their offerings once they had departed."
"Then there were those who came right to one's doorstep, requesting to be taken on as disciples. One refused to grant them an audience, but they simply would not leave, and before long, Mt. Aocang had become something of a pilgrims' campsite... One promptly posted a sign outside the abode, decreeing that all would-be disciples must first present ninety-nine dishes over a period of as many days, each dish unique in its recipe and featuring the Qingxin as the main ingredient... Naturally, the crowd soon dispersed. Hmph, to master the adepti arts and the mechanical arts requires supreme talent and the utmost stillness of mind. Training would be a futile endeavor for those who cannot even persevere for a mere three months."
"For all the wondrous feats that can be accomplished by one who has mastered the mechanical arts, one often uses it for purely recreational purposes. There was one year when it snowed heavily in Liyue, and Mt. Aocang was covered in several feet of snow. Seeing everyone cooped up in their abodes with nothing to do, one created a Snowdrift Mechanism for skiing on the mountains. One was having a tremendous time of it along with Guizhong and Streetward Rambler... until, of course, Moon Carver noticed as much and decided to join in. Moments later, he had managed to send the mechanism flying off the rails and plummeted deep into a snow bank. It took us hours to dig him out... Later, one introduced a great many safety features to the mechanism, to the point where it could be safely piloted by even a three-year-old child. Although this did entail a compromise on the top speed of the vehicle."
"One has read a great many works of popular literature since moving to Liyue Harbor. Those of the chivalric martial arts genre have proven the most entertaining, although the heroes within their pages are all works of the imagination. Would it not be even more compelling to tell the stories of the many such real-life figures with whom one is acquainted? It is a pity that one's disciples are so averse to one sharing the tales of their lives with other people... Perhaps you could relay more of the tales from your travels? One could adapt those into a novel instead."
