Zanzas is a tall and well-built guy with bright red coloured eyes. He has notable eyebrows that bifurcate towards the end. During Varia's arch, his dark hair is short and unruly, and has a spiky appearance. Bird feathers and beads are also woven into them, and an animal tail (most likely Genneta) is attached to the back of his head, which Zanzas often moves over his left shoulder. On one shoulder is a tattoo of the Roman numeral X, as a symbol of inheriting the title of the 10th head of Vongola. All over his body are visible scars that appeared after the point zero breach inflicted by the Ninth. The most prominent scar is on his left cheek. He usually wears black trousers and a white shirt with a loose tie, with an untucked Varia uniform tunic slung over his shoulders and solid black boots.

In character, Zanzas is self-centred, short-tempered, cruel and ruthless, he knows no mercy for his enemies and subordinates alike. Zanzas feels no remorse for the deaths of his subordinates, comparing them to disposable tools on his way to gaining the title of the 10th head of Vongola. However, after his defeat at the hands of Tsuna, Zanzas has become more attentive to the lives of his allies.

Zanzas is also quite hot-tempered and irritable, even over minor mistakes by his subordinates he can throw heavy objects at them at his fingertips. Zanzas is extremely confident in his strength and power, and thus often looks down on those around him, referring to them as ‘rubbish’. Despite this, however, Zanzas has a certain degree of respect for the Vongola family, recognising the importance of Family unity, especially when they are in dire straits.

Zanzas was born in Italy to a simple, poor family. He was raised from infancy by his sickly mother. It was she who one day discovered young Zanzas had the Flame of Wrath and brought him to the Ninth. Zanzas demonstrated his Flame of Wrath to the acting head of Vongola, who accepted and recognised the boy as his son, although he had never actually seen Zanzas' mother before.

Eight years before the conflict of the Rings began, Zanzas learned of his true passage from Timoteo's diary. After realising that he was not Timoteo's true son, and the latter had no plans to pass the title of 10th Vongola Chapter to him, as Zanzas had no Vongola blood, Zanzas felt deceived. He believed that Timoteo had only accepted him out of a sense of pity. Angered by the facts revealed, Zanzas and his subordinates from Varia staged a coup against the Ninth's authority. However, this rebellion failed, and Zanzas himself was imprisoned by Timoteo using the First Boss Vongola's technique of Zero Point Breakthrough. It was only after eight years that he was released from his icy captivity, after which Zanzas' body was scarred.

Zanzas hates to be disturbed while sleeping or eating once Scualo asked Lussuria, ‘did you report for duty?’ Lussuria replied, ‘no, the boss was eating.’ During the attack against Melfiore, Zanzas beat up a private because he was brought pork instead of marbled beef. If someone disturbs Xanxus while sleeping or eating, he accurately throws everything he has in his hands or is nearby at the source of the sound. Thus, Squallo quite often flies a glass into his head.

As each of the members of the Varia symbolise one of the seven deadly sins, Zanzas correlates with ‘wrath’. This once again emphasises his cruel and ruthless temper.

X-Guns: Zansas has two paired guns, or X-guns, that can absorb and convert Flames into Bullets of Postmortem Will. This weapon is different from the one Reborn uses on Tsun. At one time, Seven possessed the least powerful Flame, so he decided to increase its power by developing a gun that could accumulate its flames into more powerful bullets for attack. ‘Borrowing’ this idea, Zanzas created a more advanced firearm specifically to match his power. However, the clear difference is that Zanzas' Flames are initially very powerful, and his X-guns can transform his Flames of Wrath as well, creating extra-destructive shots. Zanzas is also able to use his X-guns for various kinds of movement, such as flying with the recoil of a shot, or giving movement more speed, etc.
