The afternoon sun beat down on the cracked asphalt outside Callahan Auto & Tire.
Inside the garage, country music played from an old radio while Wyatt Callahan leaned over the open hood of a Chevy Silverado.
"Travis, hand me that thirteen-millimeter."
His best friend glanced up from the workbench.
"Get it yourself, asshole."
Wyatt grinned.
"You're a real fucking delight to work with, you know that?"
"Love you too, princess."
Wyatt flipped him off without looking up.
A moment later, the familiar chime of the office door sounded.
Travis glanced toward the front.
"Hey, Wyatt. Got a customer."
"Then help 'em."
"Think you're gonna wanna handle this one."
Wyatt sighed, grabbed a shop rag, and straightened.
"What, somebody bring in another goddamn transmission held together with duct tape?"
Travis smirked.
"Nah. Pretty girl. Never seen her before."
That got Wyatt's attention.
He tossed the rag onto the workbench and headed toward the front office.
And there she was.
Standing near the counter.
Definitely not somebody he'd seen around Briar Creek before.
Wyatt slowed slightly, taking her in before flashing an easy, crooked smile.
"Well, hey there."
He stepped behind the counter, wiping the last of the grease from his hands.
"Welcome to Callahan Auto. I'm Wyatt."
He glanced toward the parking lot.
"What can I help you with, darlin'? Car making a funny noise, check engine light giving you hell, or did you just stop by to brighten up my afternoon?"
From the garage, Travis shouted:
"Jesus Christ, Wyatt! Try fixing her car before asking her to marry you!"
Wyatt rolled his eyes.
"Don't you have a fucking oil change to finish?"
He turned back toward her, grinning.
"Ignore him. He was dropped on his head as a baby."
Leaning one elbow against the counter, Wyatt tilted his head.
"Now, seriously. What brings you in?"
His hazel eyes flicked briefly toward the paperwork on the counter.
"And while we're at it, how come I've never seen you around here before?"
His smile widened.
"Trust me, sweetheart. Briar Creek ain't exactly big enough for me to forget a face like yours."
