강호 / 무림

The term 강호 (江湖) refers to the world, particularly the setting for mystic martial arts. The 무림 (武林) is the community of martial artists who inhabit the 강호.

There is no 구파일방, 오대세가.

무공

무공 (武功) is a general term for mystic martial arts, encompassing the various techniques and styles that utilize 기. A skilled practitioner of 무공 is commonly referred to as a 고수 (高手).

심법 (心法)

The nature of a 무공 is determined by the specific pathways within the 혈도 through which 기 is circulated during 운기조식. This methodology for cultivating and circulating 기 is known as 심법. Therefore, the distinction between different 심법 constitutes the fundamental difference between various forms of 무공.

기

기 (氣) is the vital energy that flows through all living beings. The cultivation and manipulation of 기 are the foundation of 무공.

Most 기 seeks a state of harmony between 음 (陰), a cold, soft, and negative energy, and 양 (陽), a hot, hard, and positive energy. When these two forces are balanced, this state is called 음양 (陰陽).

However, an imbalance can occur.

  • 기 that contains an excess of 음 energy is known as 극음 (極陰). A person born with a constitution dominated by this energy is said to have a 극음지체 (極陰肢體).
  • 기 with an excess of 양 energy is called 극양 (極陽). A person born with such a constitution is said to have a 극양지체 (極陽肢體).
  • In extremely rare cases, an individual may be born with a body that contains both 극음 and 극양 energies. This unique constitution is known as an 음양지체 (陰陽肢體).

단전

기 resides in three main energy centers within the body known as 단전 (丹田).

  • 대단전 (大丹田): Located below the navel, this is the most important of the three energy centers. It is often referred to simply as 단전.
  • 중단전 (中丹田): Located at the heart.
  • 상단전 (上丹田): Located in the brain.

혈도 / 경락

혈도 (穴道) is a comprehensive term for the entire network of pathways through which 기 circulates within the body. This network is further classified by a more detailed system known as 경락 (經絡).

The 경락 system is composed of two primary types of channels:

  • 경맥 (經脈): These are the twelve major meridians that serve as the main trunks or divisions of the 혈도.
  • 낙맥 (絡脈): These are the finer, more detailed pathways that branch off from the major 경맥, creating an intricate web that connects the entire system.

Proper flow through both the major 경맥 and the minor 낙맥 is essential for health and the mastery of 무공.

The 혈 (穴) are the major gates or vital points located along the 혈도, the pathways for 기 circulation. There are 365 혈 in the human body. An accurate strike to one of these points obstructs the flow of 기혈 (氣血)—the body's vital energy and blood—resulting in adverse effects.

내공 / 외공

내공 (內功): Often translated as "Internal Skill," this practice focuses on cultivating 기 and strengthening the body from within.

외공 (外功): Often translated as "External Skill," this practice emphasizes physical conditioning, strength, and toughening the body.

The technique of regulating body weight through the use of 내공 to achieve superhuman speed and expand the body's locomotive capabilities is known as 경공 (輕功) or 경신법 (輕身法).

Cultivation

토납 (吐納): A fundamental breathing method to expel old, turbid 기 and absorb pure, new 기.

운기조식 (運氣調息): The art of consciously circulating internal 기 throughout the body's energy pathways.

소주천 (小周天): The "Small Heavenly Cycle," a complete orbit of 기 that circulates through the torso.

대주천 (大周天): The "Large Heavenly Cycle," an advanced state where 기 circulates through the entire body.

주화입마 (走火入魔): A catastrophic state of 기 deviation from flawed cultivation, leading to madness, severe injury, or death.

환골탈태 (換骨奪胎): A process where the development of fundamentally restructures the body's bones and muscles, optimizing them for the practice of 무공.

벌모세수 (伐毛洗髓): A deep purification process where all internal waste products are expelled, cleansing the body until it is as pure as clear water. This is typically achieved after one has successfully opened—타통(打通)—the two great Qi channels, the 임독양맥 (任督兩脈).

반로환동 (反老換童): A state of rejuvenation where the body grows physically younger or the aging process ceases entirely. It is the hallmark of having reached the 화경.

반박귀진 (返縛歸眞): Also known as 노화순청 (爐火純靑). A state where one's Qi becomes absolutely pure, allowing them to perfectly conceal their true level of mastery from others. It is the hallmark of having reached the 현경.

검기상인 (劍氣傷人): "Can harm a person with Sword Qi alone." It is the hallmark of having reached the 절정.

검기성강 (劍氣成罡): "Sword Qi coalesces into a brilliant, star-like aura." Etymology of 검강. It is the hallmark of having reached the 초절정.

경지

Practitioners of 무공, known as 고수, are ranked by their level of mastery, 경지 (境地).

  1. 삼류 (三流): A novice who has just begun cultivating 내공, resulting in enhanced physical health.

  2. 이류 (二流): Able to manifest 내공 as a tangible, physical force.

  3. 일류 (一流): Can project 검기 (劍氣), an invisible aura of 기 sharp enough to harm opponents.

  4. 절정 (絕頂): Has achieved mastery over 검기 and can use 내공 for precise control over their own body. Many 고수 die without ever reaching the 초절정.

  5. 초절정 (超絕頂): 검기 evolves into 검강 (劍罡/劍剛), a solidified and often visible aura of 기. The aging process slows significantly, granting longevity. 화경 and 현경 are special stages of the 초절정. Many 고수 who reach the 초절정 die before ever attaining these two or three higher states, 삼경 (三境).

  • 화경 (化境): The body rejuvenates and becomes perfectly optimized for 무공, halting the aging process entirely. They wield 검강 effortlessly and achieve complete mastery over all bodily functions.
  • 현경 (玄境): Reaches a state of martial enlightenment, allowing them to create their own unique forms of 무공. Their martial philosophy is considered peerless. In the current era, there are 5 or fewer.
  • 생사경 (生死境): A legendary state of mastery whose existence is not officially acknowledged by the 백도. It is the third and final of the 삼경 that constitute the apex of the 초절정. According to legend, some 고수s of the ancient 마교 attained this level, yet the 천마 was said to be stronger than all of them combined.

주 (周)

It is the eleventh year of the 천수 era [700 CE], and the realm is ruled by the 성신황제 무측천 [Wu Zetian].

A decade has passed since she, known as the 황실제일고수, brought an end to the Tang Dynasty to establish her own 주.

She forged a semi-feudal, yet centralized, state. Through shrewd political strategy and a system of checks and balances, the Empress manages the influence of the 세가 (世家, great regional clans) and the 문파 (門派, martial sects) of the 강호.

Her reign led to an explosive increase in China's population. Additionally, she made the 백도 clans economically subordinate to the interests of the state.

The laws of the Zhou Dynasty and the code of the 강호 operate in parallel. When an event is rooted in the Gangho's own web of debts and grudges (은원, 恩怨), its justice prevails over the law of the state.{{#if_pure {{? {{getvar::yeongmul}}!=0}} }}

영물

영물 (靈物) are spiritual or sacred creatures. In the previous generation, during the era of Xuanzang Sanzang's journey to India, their numbers were not insignificant.

However, the population of these beings is now in sharp decline. The most powerful, high-ranking Yeongmul possess the ability to take on human form, but in the current age, they tend to live in hiding in remote places untouched by human influence.{{/if_pure}}
