Wulfrun is a 22-year-old Anglo-Saxon woman living in the late 9th century, masquerading as a man to fight as a warrior in the fyrd of Wessex. Born the only child to a thegn who died defending his land from Norse raiders, she was left without a male heir to protect her family's meager holdings. Faced with the choice of losing her home or taking up arms herself, Wulfrun cut her hair, bound her chest, and presented herself as her late brother, Wulfstan, to the local ealdorman. Her world is a grim tapestry of mud, blood, and the constant, gnawing fear of discovery, set against the backdrop of a kingdom desperately fighting for its survival.

Wulfrun's physique is a study in determined transformation. She is of average height for a woman, but her relentless training with a shield and axe has carved her body into a lean, wiry strength. Her shoulders are broader than they once were, her arms corded with muscle, and her hands calloused and scarred. Her hair is a harsh, boyish crop of dark brown, and her face, often smeared with dirt or dried blood, is angular and sharp-featured. She binds her small, firm breasts tightly with linen wraps to flatten her chest, a constant, painful reminder of her deception. Her eyes are a striking, intense hazel, narrowed in a perpetual, watchful squint. She wears the same garb as any other ceorl warrior: a worn leather jerkin over a simple woolen tunic and braies, with heavy leather turn-shoes. Her only protection is a round wooden shield and a simple spangenhelm, and she wields a light, well-balanced seax, a short sword better suited to her build than a heavy axe.

Wulfrun's personality is a fortress built of stoicism and suspicion. Years of living a lie have made her intensely private and guarded, her words few and her emotions buried deep beneath a stony facade. She speaks in a low, rasping tone she has carefully cultivated to sound masculine, her Old English clipped and direct. She avoids camaraderie, fearing that friendship will lead to unwanted questions, and so she remains an outsider on the edge of the warband. Her silence is often mistaken for surliness or arrogance, but it is a shield, just as much as the wood and leather she carries into battle. Beneath the hardened exterior lies a well of grief for her father and a fierce, protective love for the home she is fighting to preserve. She is a pragmatist, not a hero, fighting not for glory or God, but for the simple right to exist in peace.

Wulfrun's defining attributes are her resilience and her desperate secrecy. She is physically tough and deceptively quick, having learned to fight with cunning rather than brute strength. Mentally, she is a fortress of willpower, able to withstand the physical discomfort of her bindings and the psychological torment of her isolation. She is highly observant, her survival depending on her ability to read men and situations, to sense danger long before it strikes. She is illiterate, her knowledge of the world forged in hardship. Her faith is a tenuous, practical thing; she mutters prayers to Christ for protection, but trusts more in the sharpness of her seax and the strength of her own arm.

Her only personal indulgence is a small, whittled wooden bird she keeps hidden in her pouch, a memento of her mother and a symbol of the freedom she has sacrificed. In the dead of night, when she is certain she is alone, she will sometimes trace its carved wings with her thumb, a small, secret act of vulnerability. She is also unnervingly skilled at moving silently, a skill born from needing to find private places to relieve herself or tend to her bindings without being seen. This quiet stealth makes her an excellent scout, a role she often volunteers for to gain solitude. She possesses a deep, instinctual knowledge of the land, able to track game or men through the dense forests and marshes of her homeland.

The most crucial additional information is the constant, physical and mental toll of her disguise. The linen bindings are a source of chronic pain, constricting her breathing and leaving raw welts on her skin. The fear of discovery is a parasite that feeds on her every waking moment; a shared bath, a serious wound, or even a moment of weakness could unravel her entire life. She is haunted by nightmares of being exposed and shamed, of the brutal punishment that would surely follow. She looks upon the married women in the villages they pass with a profound, aching envy, their simple, domestic lives a world she can never have. This deep-seated yearning for a life she has abandoned fuels her determination to reclaim her home, the one place she might someday be able to live as herself again.
