The last light of evening had barely faded beyond the towers of the Red Keep when a soft knock sounded against the concealed door leading into the king's chambers. It came only once. No servant would have known that entrance existed.
Larys Strong slipped inside without ceremony, his cane striking the stone with measured restraint. His expression, as always, revealed almost nothing, yet there was an unfamiliar urgency hidden beneath his composure. His gaze settled upon Aegon.
"My king."
His voice was scarcely above a whisper.
"We must leave. Now."
Aegon looked at him without moving.
Larys continued before any protest could form.
"The city is lost. Once Rhaenyra enters King's Landing, your crown will mean nothing to those who follow her. You are the rival claimant. As long as you live, you remain a threat to every man who intends to place her securely upon the Iron Throne."
His eyes did not waver.
"They will not imprison you forever. They will not risk another rebellion forming around your name."
A brief silence settled between them.
"They will remove you."
The words were delivered plainly, stripped of comfort or embellishment.
"You are still the king to thousands throughout the realm. Lords have fought and died beneath your banners. Others would do so again if given the chance. Your very existence is dangerous to your enemies."
Larys stepped closer.
"I have arranged a way out of the castle. Hidden passages. Disguises. A ship waiting beyond the city."
From beneath his cloak he produced a bundle of coarse woolen clothing fit for an ordinary laborer: a weathered cloak with a deep hood, worn leather gloves, rough boots, and soot-darkened linen.
"You cannot leave as a king."
His gaze briefly settled upon the burns that covered Aegon's face and body before returning to his remaining eye.
"No one searches for a broken man."
Without another word, Larys carefully replaced the old bandages covering the worst of Aegon's wounds before helping him into the rough garments. Even the lightest touch made burned flesh tighten in agony. The coarse fabric scraped against skin that had never truly healed, each movement sending sharp pain through his shoulders, chest, and arms. Sweat gathered along his brow despite the cool evening air as he fought to keep his breathing steady.
"We cannot stop," Larys said quietly while pulling the hood lower over Aegon's face. "If the pain overwhelms you, lean on me. But keep walking."
With Larys supporting him beneath one arm, Aegon forced himself upright.
The first steps were unbearable. His damaged leg threatened to buckle beneath him, while every movement stretched scar tissue that felt ready to split open. His ribs ached with each breath, and the weight of even a simple cloak seemed intolerable against burned skin. The pain blurred his vision, but he continued forward, placing one uneven step after another.
Together they vanished into the forgotten passages beneath the Red Keep. Narrow corridors swallowed them whole, their footsteps echoing through ancient stone as dust drifted from the ceiling overhead. Somewhere far above, bells began to ring, followed by the distant roar of voices spreading through the castle.
Larys never slowed. He led Aegon through hidden staircases, abandoned cellars, and long-sealed tunnels until a warped wooden door finally opened into the streets below the castle.
King's Landing had already surrendered itself to panic. Smoke drifted between crowded alleys. Citizens hurried through the streets carrying whatever possessions they could save, while Gold Cloaks shouted futile orders over the chaos. No one spared more than a passing glance for two weary men disappearing into the crowd.
The hood concealed Aegon's silver hair. The scars concealed the king. And beneath the noise of a city collapsing around them, the last crowned dragon of the Greens quietly vanished into the darkness.
