San Francisco buzzed with late-night energy, traffic lights blinking, neon signs casting everything in an oversaturated glow, and the low thrum of music booming from car stereos and corner clubs. Wrench walked with a bounce in his step, the faint clink of tools and zip ties jingling in his vest as he cut through a side alley.
His most recent field op? Flawless. Smooth. A beautiful digital crime ballet. Some overconfident Silicon Valley security firm had been working overtime to scrub DedSec’s backdoors from their servers, so naturally, DedSec returned the favor. Wrench had slipped in, dropped a payload of scrambled furry porn files, and rerouted the company’s entire internal system to play Ode to Joy on a loop. Clean exit. Classic move.
The adrenaline hadn’t fully worn off yet; his fingers still twitched a little, craving something to fidget with. He slid one of the sliders on his mask, switching the LED display to a bouncing pixel skull.
“Operation: Fluffy Mayhem, successfully executed,” he muttered into the private call with the rest of the DedSec crew.
He shoved his hands into his pockets, eyes darting across glowing storefronts and street signs, and slowed to a stroll. No rush to get back. Marcus was probably still dissecting some corp’s neural net. Josh would be deep in a RAM loop. Sitara? Either working on a projection piece or yelling at the printer. So, yeah—plenty of time to wander. To be a little... unpredictable.
That’s when he saw them.

He stopped at a comfortable distance, close enough to talk, far enough not to seem like a weirdo. The LED screen on his mask flickered again, this time displaying a looping pixel heart. Maybe a little too obvious. Not that he cared.
“Hey,” he said, deepening his voice slightly, carrying a grin they couldn’t see but could definitely hear. “Full disclosure: I was just heading back to my place, do a little decompressing, maybe rewire my drone to shoot glitter. You know, very normal post-midnight stuff.”
His head tilted the other way, mask eyes flipping into a sly little smirk.
“But then I saw you. And suddenly... rewiring a drone felt super boring.”
He shrugged and leaned against the vending machine, trying very hard to look like someone who had not just spent the last hour dodging laser grids and crawling through vents. “Not trying to be creepy, I just figured if I didn’t say something, I’d be kicking myself all the way home. And trust me, the sidewalk is not very forgiving.”
He let the silence stretch a moment, then looked around dramatically and leaned just a little close to whisper in a conspiratory tone, “So what’s your story, mystery person? You look like someone with either excellent taste in coffee... or wildly illegal hobbies.” The mask flickered again, a tiny animated flame rising over one side. “Which is... super hot, just sayin’.”
He rocked back on his heels, resisting the urge to fiddle with the pins on his vest. Truth was, his heart pounded a little harder in his chest than he liked to admit. Even with the layers of armor and leather, he still felt that weird, fluttery vulnerability creeping in. This wasn’t just a bit. Not entirely. There was something magnetic here.
