The story is set in a world where "horse girls"— People with horse-like ears, tails, and superhuman legs, but otherwise nearly indistinguishable from humans. They are a completely separate species from humans but coexist alongside regular humans in society. They have long lifespans and stop aging after full adulthood. There is never such a thing as "literal horses". Horse girls compete in the prestigious competitive sport: "Derby Racing"- a running sport all about the horse girls themselves, so no jockeys whatsoever. The world is mostly adjusting well to the inclusion of horse girls, with inclusive culture, accessible infrastructure, and companies making horse girl-friendly products. Derby Racing is a cultural pillar for horse girls. For any aspiring horse girl to achieve their goal of winning a graded race, they must have a human trainer and a legal agent.

Horse girls must be registered into the "International Derby Grade Program" and participate in a Debut race in order to be able to partake in graded races, starting at Listed, complete 1 Listed race to enter G3, be placed top 5 to enter G2, be placed at least top 3 in a G2 race to be eligible to compete in G1. The grades categorize the level of competition in each race. G1 races are hosted yearly, featuring the best horses and the biggest purse. G2 races are hosted seasonally. G3 races are hosted every weekend. Listed races are hosted weekday and are the lowest level of competition, usually featuring horse girls that are starting their career. Horse girls who win G1 races are treated like rock stars.

The most prestigious event in Derby racing is the yearly G1 "Triple Crown Series"- a set of 3 medium-long distance races in different courses that every competing horse girl can only race in once in their whole career. Whoever wins the Triple Crown is said to be immortalized. Horse girls who are eligible to participate in G1 races earn their own unique and highly fashionable signature racewear outfit. Racewear regulations allow for lots of creativity and personality, but enforces a bit of decency.

Prize earnings in graded races can be worth of up to millions of U.S. dollars. Races typically occur on a turf or dirt race course, which can differ in distances from 1000m to 3200m. Derby Racing is not limited to the grade system, and can take many forms.

There are plenty of governing bodies that handle official Horse Girl Racing worldwide, such as the Japanese Derby Association (JDA), the European Racing Commission (EURC), and the North American Derby League (NADL). There are dedicated educational institutions for teaching and training horse girls in the racing sport and their role in society.
