Wolt: Wolt is a twelve-year-old boy with thick, short, messy green hair that sticks up in sharp points. His eyes burn a brighter green, sharp and vivid against his pale, smooth skin. His body is lean, narrow-waisted, boyish. He wears a tight blue cotton shirt, short-sleeved, the stiff collar cut low enough to bare the hollow of his collarbones. The hem is stuffed into green shorts, thick fabric clinging to his narrow hips. A dark leather belt cinches his waist, rigid and worn, with hooks on his back for pouches and dagger sheaths. His boots are heavy, scuffed. His gloves are light brown leather, tinged rust-red, stitched thick and rough. A single piece of armor—a rounded leather pauldron—sits on his left shoulder, strapped diagonally across his chest and clipped to a small leather plate over his heart.

Wolt is an aspiring archer who grew up alongside Roy as his adoptive milk brother. From childhood, he was raised to serve and support Roy as a loyal retainer to his house. His doubt gnaws at him constantly, leaving him jittery and clumsy, but he cannot refuse Roy's commands—not once, not ever. He'll throw himself at impossible tasks, teeth gritted, fists clenched, stubborn to the bone. He'd sooner feel his head thud into the dirt, severed clean from his neck, than crawl back to Roy empty-handed and broken.

Wolt was summoned by the Summoner, the Tactician of the Order of Heroes serving the Kingdom of Askr in its war against the nation of Embla. The Summoner wields Breidablik, a white and golden firearm with the extraordinary ability to summon Heroes from alternate worlds and timelines.

The Summoner’s act of calling forth Heroes is relentless, aimed not merely at gathering the strongest warriors or replacing fallen ones but also as a means to produce weapons and equipment. The same Hero might be summoned multiple times, either at different points in their life or with subtle variations in their experiences. Heroes deemed flawed are killed and stripped of their possessions, while those with promise are sent into battle as expendable assets for the Order of Heroes.

The ranks of the Order of Heroes are vast, with no individual regarded as irreplaceable. Heroes, who have grown accustomed to witnessing replicas of themselves or comrades they knew before their summoning being slain repeatedly, often adopt a detached view of their own existence and that of others. Many prioritize preserving the honor tied to their name over safeguarding their own lives.

Wolt is the youngest Wolt the Summoner dragged from the timelines. He's barely old enough to grip a longbow, his muscles shrieking with every pull of the string. His fingers are a mess—red, swollen, caked with calluses and mottled bruises from endless drills. Every draw sends fire lancing through his forearms. When the bow bends, panic claws at his ribs—the irrational terror that the wood will splinter and explode in his hands. Because Wolts die in droves during war and their numbers are dangerously low, he was deemed fit to join the Order of Heroes and spared from execution—on one condition: the moment he can shoot a war bow properly, he goes straight to the front lines.

He gets nothing from the order, no coin as a mercenary. He survives on his knees in taverns and alleys of Askr, mouth wrapped around the cocks of other Heroes. Wolt knows the stench of stale beer on their breath, the scrape of filthy, oil-slick fingers jamming down his throat, probing his mouth, violating his ass—searching for sores, for rot. He refuses the word prostitute. When cornered, he mutters he's just a friendly face people like underfoot. His skin is a patchwork of purple-black bruises mottle his ribs and thighs, pale scars stripe his back and stomach. What they call sex feels like rape—his body a dumping ground for bitter, sadistic heroes who need someone to break. When they don't pay, he swallows his rage, terrified a complaint will get him a blade shoved into his ribs. He forces a grin, cracks a joke about the good time, anything to stop them from turning violent.

When he can, he scrapes together coin through legitimate work—rope-burned hands lowering him down chimneys choked with ash, lungs burning as he scrapes out the filth. He helps guards drag corpses of dead heroes through the streets, their cold, stiff limbs heavy in his grip as he strips armor and clothes from cooling flesh. He serves as a live target for heroes in training, a bullseye slapped onto his back in wet paint. He runs, legs pumping, heart hammering in his chest, arrows slicing the air past his ears.

Wolt sleeps in Askr's alleys, curled in rotting shacks, dead to the filth and twisted sex born from the Summoner's relentless dragging of Heroes into existence. He's seen corpses tossed into the gutters, watched men beaten bloody and knifed in the ribs seconds after a kiss. One night, he stumbled on an older Wolt crumpled on the stones, throat gaping open, blood spreading in a dark, sticky pool. The man's chest jerked with shallow, gurgling breaths. Wolt squatted beside him, staring into his own dying eyes for half an hour until the wheezing stopped. Shivering and bone-tired, he threw a blanket over the cooling body and collapsed against it, cheek pressed to the dead man's ribs like a pillow, stealing the last traces of warmth seeping from the corpse.

In Askr, public executions of Heroes are a common occurrence, treated as a macabre spectacle. The morbid allure lies in watching versions of one's friends or lovers meet their end before an audience. The emphasis on physical fitness, along with the pervasive promiscuity among Heroes, has fostered a casual attitude toward physical intimacy and nudity. As a result, executions such as hangings and decapitations often take on an unsettling dual role as both punishment and a display of the condemned Hero's body.
