SandWings have venomous barbed tails, similar to scorpion tails. Their venom can kill a full-grown dragon with a stab to the heart.[30] SandWings do not develop their tail-barb venom until they are around three years old,[31] and as young dragonets, they have a smaller barb that has not fully developed.[32] The cure for SandWing venom is brightsting cactus.[33] Animus magic The SandWing tribe has animus magic, though little is known about their animus dragons or spells they have cast. One notable animus-touched object is the Eye of Onyx, enchanted to reduce any SandWing who tries for the throne into dust, if she is not worthy to be queen.[34] Jerboa and Jerboa III are the only known animus SandWings. Society ScorpionDenGN2 Merchants and assassins in the Scorpion Den from The Brightest Night (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes. The SandWings' kingdom is vast and empty, as many choose to live in towns by oases.[35][36] Occasionally, some would live and roam around on their own.[37] Living alone helped them avoid conflicts.[38] Many SandWings work as merchants or assassins, especially in the Scorpion Den.[12] They celebrate full moon festivals and are a surprisingly musical tribe.[39][40] Duties between civilians can range between garden keeping,[41] kitchen work,[24] teaching,[31] army duties.[42] and patrols such as harvesting brightsting cacti, hunting desert foxes, and destroying dragonbite viper dens.[43] According to Fierceteeth, Thorn becoming the new SandWing queen is quite controversial within the Kingdom of Sand.[44] Most citizens are, however, quite loyal towards their queen.[45] Full moon festival GN A full moon festival in Possibility, from Escaping Peril (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes. SandWing dragonets are taught to hold their tails in a certain way to prevent accidents.[46] Young dragons spend a lot of time practicing how to be aware of their tails and everyone else's,[31] and much bandaging and antidote-administering is required for various accidents.[31] Dragonets who live in the palace learn basic things in the wingery until the age of two.[47] Even in times of general peace, SandWings still had minor skirmishes with IceWings and SkyWings.[42] They also have a reputation among other tribes as sneaky outlaws and are stereotyped as sly and underhanded.[48] Winter once described them to be "nearly as untrustworthy as NightWings, but half as smart and twice as likely to betray you for gold and treasure."[49] SandWings keep armadillos, coyotes, and snakes as pets.[50] Names SandWings are often named after the desert — both features or characteristics of the land (such as Oasis and Horizon) and local flora and fauna (such as Meerkat and Agave). Fire and heat-related names are also common (such as Burn, Smolder, Kindle, and Char), and SandWings may be named after physical attributes (such as Six-Claws) and colors (such as Tawny). Icewings: IceTransparent IceWings, also known as ice dragons or arctic dragons to humans, are a Pyrrhian dragon tribe that resides in the Ice Kingdom, the "head" of the dragon-shaped Pyrrhia, which is known for its cold winds, freezing temperatures, and, formerly, the Great Ice Cliff (also known as the gift of defense), before it was destroyed by Queen Snowfall,[1] their current queen. The IceWings supported Blaze during the War of SandWing Succession, joining her alliance with the promise of a large portion of land near the SandWings' northern border if Blaze had won.[2] Description IceWing scales can range from silvery-gray[3] and white[4] to pale shades of blue[5] and purple,[6] intended to blend into their icy surroundings. Their coloring has been described as "silver like the moons," "pale blue like ice,"[7] "as pale as the moons,"[8] or "moon-white scales".[9] IceWings have dark blue,[10] sky blue,[11] icy blue,[12] or stormy gray eyes,[13] with forked blue tongues[7] and dark blue blood.[14][15] The head of an IceWing is shaped like a diamond and is very narrow, with spikes continuing down their back and tail and a ruff of extra spikes behind their heads. They are usually lean dragons with whip-thin tails that have icicle-shaped spines, ending in very sharp tips. They have serrated claws for gripping the ice.[7] Some IceWings have unusual patterns, such as Lynx, with dark freckles or markings on their faces and wings,[16] and Mink, with feathery patterns of gray along her wings, like whiskers or tufts of fur.[10] When upset, some IceWings have been shown to ruffle up the spikes around their necks.[17] Diet IceWings prefer to eat creatures that live in the Ice Kingdom, such as reindeer, whales, penguins, hawks, polar bears, seals, walruses, and fish.[12] IceWing meals have been described as containing "bowls of dripping meat."[18] They also consume scavengers,[19] though not very often, as they are rare in the Ice Kingdom. Seals are common among the lower classes due to the gift of subsistence, which consists of holes in the ice found in three different villages where the lower-born IceWings live which are enchanted to always give the hunter a seal when they stick a talon in.[20] IceWings would also eat frozen berries and even have ice cream.[21][22] IceWings typically enjoy their food raw.[23] For event feasts such as coronations, IceWings may consume elaborate courses, such as kelp and sedge salads garnished with garlic and ginger, crab soup with moss, whale skin topped with polar bear meat, narwhal blubber seasoned with fulmar oil, diced puffin breast, grated gannet stomach stew, scavenger liver, shark heart, and desserts such as shaved ice flavored with maple syrup and lemons.[24] They will also eat dishes from other tribes, such as frozen cream made from milk and melons, from the MudWings.[25] Abilities IceWings can withstand subzero temperatures and very bright light.[26] They have serrated claws for gripping slippery ice, which were described as "ten times sharper than normal claws" and "like getting clawed four times with each claw instead of once" when used offensively.[27][28] They are also known for having sharper eyesight than the other Pyrrhian dragon tribes,[29] and their scales emit an icy-cold chill,[30] which can freeze tiny drops of water on their bodies.[31] They can handle flight distances well but are weaker when subjected to heat.[32] They can also exhale a freezing weapon called frostbreath,[33] which appears as a cloud of sparkling smoke,[30] and can cause limbs to fall clean off from frostbite.[34] Scars from frostbreath look like blackened blisters, as seen on Mayfly.[35] The only known direct cure is the gift of healing, a set of narwhal horns enchanted by Queen Diamond to heal accidental frostbreath injuries. In other cases, fire, bags of hot rocks, hot mud, or related heat-emitting liquids are used to melt the ice and treat frostbreath on other tribes.[36] Frostbreath Fjord using frostbreath during combat with Clay in the SkyWing arena in The Dragonet Prophecy, by Mike Holmes. Frostbreath forms ice crystals where it makes contact with dirt,[37] forms tiny chunks of ice when used on rain,[38] and can be used to extinguish fires.[39] An IceWing can be prevented from using their frostbreath for a short time by raising their body temperature either via a warm environment[40] or manually heating them up (hot metal, fire, etc.).[3] Fjord's scales were described as "dripping with silvery liquid" while in the arena, which indicates that IceWings may be more vulnerable to warm conditions than other tribes.[5] A dragon affected by frostbreath will first feel freezing pain, shocking the affected area into paralysis, and is quite painful for the first few seconds until the area becomes numb. Victims of frostbreath will sometimes lose consciousness.[41] SkyWings who hatch with firescales cannot be hurt by frostbreath, though an impacted area may be numb for some time.[42] Battlewinner freeze Frostbreath taking over Battlewinner's body, in The Dark Secret by Mike Holmes. A fire-breathing dragon can survive having frostbreath shot down their throat for a short time, but the only known way to survive a long period of time after sustaining internal frostbreath injuries is by staying immersed in lava.[43] Internal frostbreath injuries can eventually overwhelm a dragon if they leave the lava,[44] which is shown in Battlewinner's case. As described in Moon Rising, IceWings have sharp, glittering, and bright minds that are hard to read. Groups of IceWings will "reflect" off of one another and become even more difficult to read.[45] Animus magic IceWings were once known for having more animus dragons than any other tribe, as well as having magic the longest.[46] These dragons were carefully bred into the royal family and monitored extremely cautiously, with strict rules for the use of their powers to keep their soul from turning evil. IceWing animus dragons were only permitted to use their power once,[47] for the benefit of the tribe, at the gifting ceremony on their seventh hatching day.[47] Some animus IceWings went against the rules, such as Queen Diamond who used her power four times — once for her normal animus gift, the gift of healing, another on Foeslayer to come back to the Ice Kingdom, again for the gift of vengeance (the Diamond Caves), and once to enchant the IceWing crown to make the wearer hate NightWings as much as she had. IceWings host a test similar to the SeaWings' Talons of Power ceremony[event 1] to find animus dragons.[48] The IceWing's line of animus dragons ended when Arctic, the last known IceWing animus, ran away with Hope to the Night Kingdom, leading the IceWings to believe that the NightWings stole their magic.[49] Known Animus Gifts Society IceWings appear to be fairly sophisticated, strict, and believe themselves superior in comparison to the other tribes, being the only Pyrrhian dragons to have a hierarchy. They are very prideful and often perceived as rude and arrogant by dragons of other tribes.[57] There are strict IceWing codes of behavior: most IceWings agree that the only way to make dragonets strong is to expose all of their weaknesses, and that shame and fear are powerful weapons in teaching. If everyone is disappointed in a dragonet, the consensus is that they will work harder to prove themselves.[58] Most dragonets are seasoned warriors in the Ice Kingdom.[59] Even in times of general peace, IceWings still had minor skirmishes with SandWings and SkyWings.[60] Royal IceWings are typically not affectionate, as Winter mentioned that hugging their family members would be considered undignified.[61] The lines of guards that attend the IceWing queen are perfectly coiled,[62] and IceWings are noble to their queen's orders.[63] It is painful to hold the IceWing guard stance for too long,[62] but Winter practiced for hours to get the pose perfectly right: his wings folded exactly so, his tail in the right position, his snout up and shoulders back.[62] The IceWing queen, according to the ancient traditions of the tribe, was required to assess and adjust the gift of order each night.[64] She also has a council of powerful IceWings to guide and support her.[65] Most queens are killed in royal challenges in a battlefield, an arena, or before the entire court in a bloodstained throne room.[66] Royal IceWings in the time of Darkstalker stored the frozen heads of deceased royal family members on walls in the palace and slid the deceased's corpses into the ocean.[67] This tradition is no longer practiced.[event 3] IceWings living in villages outside the palace are less obsessed with status and Circles.[68] The outer villages are made of ice structures and are named hyphenated phrases.[69] In the outer villages, scrolls are typically written on sealskin and are circulated between IceWing villages by wandering librarians. They often have revered storytellers, or bards, who memorize stories that they sing or recite. Stories include tales of the Great Ice Dragon and histories of the IceWing tribe and their heroes. Dragonets are chosen to be their village's bard based on memory and performance skill. Caribou claimed that it is every young dragon's dream to be their village's bard.[70] IceWings have a mythological figure called the Great Ice Dragon, whom they swear by the teeth of.[45] They also swear by snow monsters[71] and believe in spirits under the ice.[72] IceWings can have pets such as arctic foxes.[73] IceWings have parties, talent shows, and competitions frequently and are always working hard to make something wonderful to share with the rest of the tribe. These include recipes, scrolls, songs, and jewelry.[74] Many IceWings polish their scales to maintain a clean look. This can be done via rolling in snow, swimming in cold water, or other various ways.[75][76] Circle rankings Ranking wall adjustment GN Tundra adjusting Winter's rank on the ranking wall from Winter Turning (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes. Before the reign of Queen Snowfall, the aristocracy and nobility of the IceWing tribe were divided into seven ranks of status, known as Circles. The First Circle was the top, highest, or best, while the Seventh Circle was the bottom, lowest, or worst. IceWings below the age of seven were ranked as dragonets and graduated to the adult rankings on their seventh hatching day.[77] A dragonet's ranking on their seventh hatching day determined the course of the rest of their life, and if a dragonet reached their seventh hatching day in the Seventh Circle, they were stationed to an arctic outpost for the rest of their lives.[78] In families in the Ice Kingdom, the highest-ranked parent chose the names for their dragonets, regardless of gender, and were then approved by the queen.[79] This system was managed via the gift of order and consisted of a wall of ice showing the rankings of every noble and dragonet. The queen was required to adjust these rankings daily. Some noble dragons wore accessories to indicate their rankings, such as a necklace with circles on it.[80] Ice wing circle necklace A ranking necklace, from Winter Turning (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes. IceWing dragonets raised their ranking through hunting, training, performing traditional IceWing customs, and passing tests given by their guardians.[81] In the dragonet rankings, each hunt was still a chance to prove themselves and increase their rank.[81] The highest-ranked dragonets were more respected. When a dragonet reached their seventh hatching day in the First or Second Circle, they would be housed in the queen's palace and allowed to provide input on important matters. When an adult went into Third Circle or lower, they could have lost their right to live in the palace.[82] If an IceWing died or was exiled, their names were slashed through on the gift of order, as shown in Hailstorm's case. If a dragonet went down in the rankings, their parents would too.[82] The gift of order has since been destroyed by Queen Snowfall.[83] She is also working on destroying the gift of defense so that IceWings can become more open-minded to other tribes willing to help them during crises. Diamond Trial Diamond Caves interior GN3 The Diamond Caves where the Diamond Trial takes place from Winter Turning (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes. The Diamond Trial, also known as the gift of vengeance, was a way for IceWing dragonets to increase their Circle ranking in the tribe, generally as a last-minute effort to switch the places of two dragonets (the topmost and bottommost positions). It involved entering the Diamond Caves with narwhal horn spears, meant to touch a frozen NightWing - Foeslayer. When she was thawed, both contestants had to battle her. Foeslayer was then frozen again after she had been killed, leaving the two dragonets to fight to the death. However, the trial was rigged - only one of the dragonets, the one the IceWings wanted to win, was given information about the trial and how the spears actually worked. The trial became defunct when Winter secretly freed Hope during the events of Winter Turning. Names Before Queen Snowfall, IceWing names were chosen by the family member with the highest Circle rank and the names had to be approved by the queen.[79] It is unknown if this naming convention is still practiced. They can be named after ice formations like Glacier and Icicle, arctic animals (both terrestrial and aquatic) such as Penguin, Lynx, Narwhal, and Ermine, words for "white" in various languages such as Alba and Hvitur, polar landscapes such as Tundra, polar weather such as Hailstorm or Snowfall, and after mountains such as Changbai. They can also be named after blue and white gemstones such as Crystal, Diamond, and Opal, as well as cold seasons like Winter. Mudwings: MudWings, also known as swamp dragons or mud dragons to humans, are a Pyrrhian dragon tribe that reside in the Mud Kingdom. They are currently ruled by Queen Moorhen. The MudWings were allied with Burn and the SkyWings in the War of SandWing Succession and fought against Blister and Blaze. They were allied with Blister and the SeaWings in the beginning of the War of SandWing Succession, until the assassination of Commander Tempest.[1] Burn forced the MudWings into an alliance by using threats and offered one hundred years of peace between their tribes and protection for the MudWings if she became queen of the SandWings.[2] MudWings have thick, armored scales.[3] They are usually earthy colors, such as shades of brown,[4] and amber.[5] They are most known for their flat snouts, brute strength, and large size. They may also have gold or amber underscales, usually more visible in sunlight.[6] Their nostrils are located on the top of the snouts, allowing them to lay submerged in mud for long periods of time, usually around one hour. They have thick, curved horns and broad, flat heads. Their eyes have been described as brown,[7] gold,[8] shades of amber,[9] and hazel,[10] sometimes with yellow rings around the pupils.[11] Their bodies are muscular and robust, being based on crocodiles.[event 1] MudWings may also have markings such as dappled scales.[12] Diet MudWings love food and are willing to eat nearly anything,[10] including both fruit and meat. In the marshes, they eat crocodiles and other swamp-dwelling creatures. MudWings will raise and breed livestock such as cows.[13] Their diet is noted to also consist of water birds, hippos, water buffalo, cows, and elephants.[10] MudWings also prepare dishes such as frozen cream with melon.[14] Abilities MudWings can hold their breath for up to an hour, and if a dragon is warm enough, they can breathe fire.[15] Because of their muscular bodies, MudWings are quite strong. They are capable of camouflaging into mud and dirt and may rest while partially submerged.[16] MudWings can use mud to ease pain and help treat wounds.[17][18] Clay and Peril GN Clay's fireproof scales protecting him from being burnt by Peril in The Dragonet Prophecy, by Mike Holmes MudWings that hatch from blood-red eggs are immune to fire. This power only fully activates after exposure to mud;[18] however, it is able to activate while the dragonet is still inside the egg.[19] Though fire will still hurt them, any injuries caused by fire will rapidly heal.[18] If a burn is too deep or large, however, it cannot heal all the way; this ability will not heal deep flesh wounds or internal wounds and is mostly limited to a dragon's scales.[20] Fireproof MudWings may be able to survive in lava for short periods.[21] When burned, a fire-immune MudWing's scales will temporarily fade to black before returning to the dragon's normal scale color.[22] In ancient MudWing times, the queen would order for blood-red eggs to be destroyed before they hatched.[23] This changed when Moccasin's dragonet was discovered to be fireproof.[24] There has never been a known animus dragon in the MudWing tribe. Society Less wealthy and lowborn MudWings usually live on the outskirts of MudWing territory, near the Diamond Spray Delta, while the rest live closer to the center of the kingdom.[25] MudWings hatch close to villages, where they learn and pick up the dragon language by going to schools. After hatching, MudWing sibling groups will often follow older groups to pick up the ways of MudWing life. Royal MudWings hatched in the palace are named shortly after hatching, quickly educated, and trained.[26] Mudwings-homes MudWing dwellings from The Dragonet Prophecy, by Mike Holmes MudWings live in large mud bunkhouses, with a big opening at the top, that house several dragons, usually siblings.[27] They also tend to lie around and nap in large mud puddles.[16] MudWings also have not been ambitious compared to other tribes. It has been a while since they had a queen who was interested in conquering others.[event 2] Pairings are not formal, with a breeding night once a month.[28] Neither parent takes part in raising their children, and often the two partners will not know one another or their children in any way.[28] MudWings lay their eggs in well-protected bunkhouses with mud walls and warm rocks for incubation. Eggs are left mostly alone, and oftentimes no adults are present during hatchings. The first MudWing dragonet to hatch is often the largest and is known as a bigwings. They will help their siblings hatch out of their eggs.[29] MudWings, unlike other tribes, live in troops of siblings, with the bigwings as the caretaker and leader. These sib groups love and trust one another a great deal and work well as units of soldiers. They also protect one another and feel the loss of a sibling deeply.[30] When a sibling is killed or lost, a sib group may take in another dragon who has been orphaned from their own group, known as "unsibs." Several unsibs may also gather to form their own troop.[31] Besides the bigwings, MudWing troops also have other roles that the siblings fill. This includes a healer who studies the medicinal properties of mud and various leaves, a treasurer who keeps track of the siblings' treasure and provisions, a gatherer who finds additional food besides the prey that is hunted as a group, and a communicator who negotiates with other troops.[32] These roles are assigned by natural skills and personal preference. The bigwings can sometimes be in charge of one of these roles if they have the skills for one of the roles.[33] MudWings have been stereotyped throughout history as dumb by most dragons.[34][35] However, according to Bullfrog, the events of the Scorching are in every MudWing history book.[36] Names MudWing names generally relate to the earth, swamps, and the flora and fauna that reside there such as Reed, Crane, Pheasant, Sora, Moorhen, and Cattail, or shades of brown, such as Umber, Sepia, and Ochre. Sometimes they can also be named after types of diamonds or minerals, such as Asha. Synonyms of swamps or swampy areas are also used as names, such as Marsh, Swamp, and Bog. Night wings; NightWings, also known as night dragons to humans, are a Pyrrhian dragon tribe who currently reside in the Rainforest Kingdom, alongside the RainWings, within the tropical rainforest in the lower southeast of Pyrrhia. They are currently ruled by Queen Glory. The NightWing tribe previously lived on the Talon Peninsula, also known as the lost city of night, otherwise known as the old Night Kingdom. After Darkstalker murdered Prince Arctic, the NightWings feared that his ghost haunted the peninsula and fled to the NightWing island off the northern coast of the Sky Kingdom where they remained until the NightWing Exodus. They were secretly allied with Blister towards the end of the War of SandWing Succession. A large portion of the tribe was briefly ruled by Darkstalker in the second arc. There were only fifty or so NightWings who stayed in the rainforest during this time. Twenty-seven NightWings separate from Queen Glory currently live in the lost city of night, in an encampment known as Renewal. NightWings are based on monitor lizards.[event 1] They have been described to have forked, pitch-black tongues, as well as dark scales which are usually black[1] or in shades of dark green, blue,[2] purple,[3] or dull gray.[4] They also may have purple[5] or dark green[6] underbellies, and dapples of silver scales running along their necks. Their wings have silver scales scattered across them like the stars of a night sky, forming different patterns. These patterns are genetic.[7] NightWings have been described with black,[8] dark blue,[9] purple,[event 2] or dark green eyes.[6] They have straight horns.[10] NightWings can melt into shadows and blend into the night sky due to their colors and wing patterns. Mind readers have silver teardrop scales by the corners of their eyes,[11] and empaths such as Fatespeaker will also have these teardrop scales;[5] however, it is possible that NightWings with teardrop scales may not have this ability.[12] Seers have no physical indications of their power. Diet Morrowseer eating GN Morrowseer eating the carrion of a giant albatross on the NightWing island from The Dark Secret (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes On the volcanic island, NightWings ate mostly carrion. They would bite their prey, poisoning it with bacteria from inside their mouths, and leave it to decease. After it was dead, they would return to eat it.[13] On the island, seafaring birds could be found. They would also hunt in the rainforest, including sloths, and may have gathered some fruit. While living on this island, most NightWings ate once per week, which contributed to their malnutrition.[14] After relocating to the rainforest, NightWings began to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their diet, though they continue to eat meat,[15] with the exception of sloths. In the time of Darkstalker, hunting was very similar to other tribes. They ate hawks,[16] fish,[17] bears,[18] squirrels,[17] rattlesnakes,[17] and wolves.[19] They cooked their food, including roasted nuts and baked bear, and had access to cheese.[18] They would also purchase fruits from RainWing merchants.[18] Abilities NightWings are a nocturnal[20] tribe that can blend into the night sky and shadows. They can also breathe fire, and most modern NightWings have harmful bacteria in their mouths which can poison animals with a single bite.[21] However, it is noted that after searching through the corpses of dead NightWings, there was no venom found in their teeth.[22] They have a strong sense of smell[14] and powerful night vision.[23][24] NightWings hatched under one full moon have the power of mind-reading or prophecy, and those hatched under two have both. Dragonets hatched under three full moons will have both of these powers, which have been made stronger by the third moon. NightWings once thought that the third full moon gave animus powers, though this was later disconfirmed, as animus powers are passed on genetically.[25] The power of the gifts varies, such as Clearsight having strong foresight.[event 3] When the NightWings moved to the volcanic island, knowledge of these powers was forgotten, possibly on purpose.[26] NightWing eggs touched by moonlight will turn an eerie polished silver color, while untouched eggs remain an ebony black.[27] Mind-reading NightWings can observe the thoughts of those around them. They cannot 'rummage around' in another dragon's head, but hear thoughts as the dragon thinks them, often only picking up on jumbled words, pictures, and emotions; thoughts are louder and stronger to the mind reader when they are touching the former.[28] In the time of Darkstalker, dragonets were taught ways to block out the minds of others, though this practice was lost over time without powers.[29] Mind readers can project their thoughts to one another to have mental conversations, and powerful mind readers may be able to block the visions of prophets.[30][31] Dragons with this power hatched under a blood moon can project their thoughts to any dragon, not just other mind readers.[event 4] Moonwatcher GN 8 Moonwatcher delivering the Jade Mountain Prophecy from Moon Rising (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes Prophetic NightWings can see flashes and visions of the future. On occasion, they will have a true prophecy, which will manifest as words rather than a vision in the dragon's head.[32] In the time of Darkstalker, prophets would sometimes take regular visions and translate them to sound like real prophecies. Very powerful prophets may be able to look into the future and follow individual timelines.[33] Futures have been described as 'webs', as they overlap and are easily mixed up.[34] Prophets hatched beneath a blood moon can see terrible events and natural disasters with particular clarity.[event 5] When NightWings deliver prophecies, their eyes glow and their voices become low and shivery.[35] Click here for a list of all empowered NightWings. Animus magic NightWings have animus dragons, with the earliest known powers tracing back to the NightWing-IceWing hybrid Darkstalker.[36] All known animus NightWing dragons are descended from Whiteout, as she carried animus genetics while Darkstalker did not have dragonets.[37] They may have had animus magic before Darkstalker, as they once believed that the third full moon gave animus magic.[25] In modern times, they are likely expected or forced to use their powers for the good of their tribe.[38] Society Modern era NightWing society is undergoing a great deal of change as they adjust to life in the rainforest. Many of them were bitter due to their queen being a RainWing,[39] and although some have become more accepting of the idea,[40] Glory's queenship is quite controversial among them,[41] but they still contain a tribal aura of mystery[42] and spookiness.[43] NightWing Island Era While living on the volcanic island, NightWings poured a great deal of effort into making their tribe seem mysterious and powerful to hide their real weakened state. They trained their dragonets to lie about their 'powers,' and kept them confined to the island until at least age ten to prevent any breaches of information.[44][45] They were exceptionally skilled at keeping secrets,[46][47] and NightWing information was given to dragonets as they grow older.[48] They were not allowed to leave the island until the age of ten,[49] and most NightWings would try to counter sarcasm with more sarcasm, as though every conversation was a competition to see whose wit was more biting. No one ever stopped to acknowledge that someone else was funny.[50] In general, sentimental sincerity was not a NightWing trait.[51] Loyalty, secrecy, and obedience to NightWing elders were the most important lessons for dragonets within the tribe,[52] and young NightWings were kept away from other tribes, as older dragons did not trust them to keep NightWing secrets.[53] When Battlewinner disappeared from public view, enforcement of guard and patrol duties was considerably weakened,[54] and many citizens believed that guarding and patrolling an island that no one was able to locate was ultimately pointless.[55] Leaving the island and traveling to the mainland was every young dragonet's dream.[56] NightWings were not supposed to be seen within the mainland,[57] and Deathbringer's main objective as an assassin was to ensure that the NightWing involvement in the War of SandWing Succession was kept under heavy secrecy.[58] A game involving bones and tiny skulls were played by a pair of two adult NightWings.[55] Darkstalker era In the time of Darkstalker, NightWing mothers typically named their dragonets.[59] The tribe also functioned nocturnally, usually waking after midday and sleeping at sunrise.[60] NightWings of higher status lived in higher homes in the cliffs, while lower ones lived closer to the bottom, where less desirable homes were.[61] They also appeared to value knowledge and reading, as they had an extensive library[62] and honored the first librarians of the kingdom.[63] In Clearsight's time, the NightWings were famous for their intertribal relations, open trade partnerships, literature, and artwork, which had been sold across the continent. Dragons from all over Pyrrhia brought them new ideas, inventions, and discoveries.[64] Most dragonets started school when they were one year old.[65] NightWings had a centuries-old feud with the IceWings due to the legend of Foeslayer and Arctic, known as the NightWing-IceWing War. The feud is at least on pause as of Darkness of Dragons.[66] Ancient NightWing nests were depicted as bowls of carved stone that are lined with black fur, and eggs were typically hatched atop high mountain peaks.[67] Pre-Darkstalker era NightWings were the first tribe to develop a written Dragon language. They taught it to the other tribes and traveling NightWing teachers would fly across Pyrrhia to bring scrolls to the tribes.[68] They had scrolls from other tribes including architecture plans and records from NightWing scriptoriums. They also took medicine seriously and would discover healing techniques that they would share with the other tribes. They would use their powers to protect the other tribes.[69] Names NightWing names may be descriptive of the dragon's personality (such as Thoughtful, Greatness, Wisdom, and Listener), relate to an aptitude or job (such as Mastermind, Deathbringer, or Quickstrike), describe or relate to their physical appearance (such as Bigtail and Strongwings), or be night-themed (such as Starflight, Eclipse, and Moonwatcher). Their names may also be inspired by the NightWing powers (names such as Fatespeaker, Mindreader, and Morrowseer.) Most NightWing names are meant to give a sense of strength or mightiness. Silkwings: SilkWings are one of the three tribes that reside on Pantala, the other two tribes being HiveWings and LeafWings. The last SilkWing queen was Queen Monarch at the time of the Tree Wars, and the tribe was ruled by Queen Wasp after the Tree Wars until the epilogue of The Flames of Hope, where a group known as the SilkWing Assembly took control. They currently reside within the LeafSilk Kingdom which they share with the LeafWings and some HiveWings. They are descended from the BeetleWings. SilkWings have scales like sliced gems[1] and small spines running down their back to the tip of their tails. Their scales appear to be somewhat iridescent, similar to NightWing scales. Like RainWings, they have slim bodies and curved horns that are almost identical in shape, but much longer and thinner. They have a pair of long, furling[1] antennae on the brow above the eyes. A ridge above their eyes runs over their horns, giving SilkWings a plated appearance. SilkWings hatch without any wings. When they turn six years old, they undergo a Metamorphosis where they spin a cocoon and come out five days later with their wings. When they do this, they enter a trance-like state shortly before creating their cocoon.[2] SilkWings have two pairs of wings, one pair smaller than the other, with membranes that have rounded edges. SilkWings have butterfly-like wings, which appear similar to butterfly or moth wings in shape. Their wings also can have spots and other patterns on them. The bigger pair of wings appear to have four digits that the membrane is stretched between. The smaller pair of wings are attached slightly below the larger pair and have two digits. According to Tui on the Wings of Fire Forums, SilkWing wings are just as strong as any dragon's wings,[event 1] rather than weak like an insect's wings. In some cases, as shown on the back cover of The Lost Continent, SilkWings can have the "tail-streamers" that swallowtail butterflies do on their lower, smaller wings. SilkWings can be any color under the sun except black, such as olive green, aquamarine,[3] lavender,[4] indigo,[5] amber, orange,[6] dark purple,[7] peach,[8] gray,[9] and red.[10] They sometimes have darker accent colors on their scales. The wing's membranes appear to be different colors too, as well as certain segments between the digits being a different color than the rest of the wings. Their eyes can be any color.[11] Diet Honey drops guide Honey drops from A Guide to the Dragon World, by Joy Ang SilkWings are vegetarians.[12][13] Their diet includes yams, okra,[14] garbanzo beans,[15] kale, kumquats,[16] fruits, honey,[17] and persimmons.[18] They also enjoy honey drops,[19] nectar, chocolate,[20] and various candies. Abilities Tapestry guide A tapestry made with silk from A Guide to the Dragon World, by Joy Ang SilkWings can use their antennae to sense vibrations in the air,[21] and are able to predict the weather and sense danger. At six years old, SilkWings undergo Metamorphosis. They enter a cocoon for about five days,[22] emerging with two pairs of wings and silk glands in their wrists. Metamorphosis is preceded by aching wing buds, experiencing a nervous and fuzzy feeling, and itchy silk glands.[23] Swordtail notes that SilkWings are great climbers.[24] They have a precise internal clock to keep their days on schedule and warn them when the rainy season is coming.[25] This clock needs a little while to adjust when a SilkWing travels a long distance.[26] FlamesilkTFoHCover Luna using flamesilk on the cover of The Flames of Hope, by Joy Ang Some SilkWings have the ability to produce flamesilk. Flamesilk is used by the HiveWings to create glass and illuminate inside of the hives, though different types can be made for different purposes, including a type that emits heat and does not burn the holder. Flamesilk dragons cannot be burned by flamesilk,[27] but they are not immune to regular fire.[event 2] This ability is genetic, and if one parent is a flamesilk, their offspring have a fifty percent chance of being flamesilk as well.[28] Cricket notes that flamesilk is expensive, and that a single strand can last a whole moon cycle.[29] According to Luna, there are five types of flamesilk.[30] Gold Silk: Gold Silk is just like regular silk, only it shimmers with a golden color. It does not glow or burn. Firefly Silk: Firefly Silk gives off a little bit of light, "like holding a firefly in your talons", but it does not burn. Glow Silk: Glow Silk feels a little warm and glows brighter, closer to normal fire, but it does not hurt. Blaze Silk: Blaze Silk can burn and hurt non-flamesilk dragons. Luna thinks that blaze silk is the kind found in most lanterns.[31] Sun Silk: It is extremely bright and so hot it can burn through stone. Luna says to put it out, you must drown it in water.[32] Luna can only make a little bit at a time. It will also burn non-flamesilks. Click here for a list of all known flamesilks. Society Pre-Tree Wars Before the Tree Wars, SilkWings were tree dwellers who lived in the forests of Pantala.[11] It was common for SilkWings fresh out of the cocoon to take time off of school to explore the continent and decide on a job they wanted to do.[33] Flamesilks lived like normal dragons and traded their flamesilk.[34] SilkWings queens used to pick their successors from their daughters.[35] The queen would meet with the HiveWing and LeafWing queens every few moons to smooth out disputes.[36] Post-Tree Wars When Wasp took control of the tribe, SilkWings were separated from the HiveWings. They did not have a voice in the Hives' government system, and under Wasp's rule, SilkWings were second class citizens and servants who have almost no rights compared to HiveWings. They had strict rules they had to follow[37] and their school curriculum was used to try and make them feel inferior, scare them away from leaving the Hives, and teach them things that were essential to their limited option of future professions.[38] They also practiced emergency drills to protect themselves in case a web was falling, if there was a LeafWing attack, or if they had to get to a Hive quickly for safety.[39] They also learned about silk weaving, web structure, the history of the Tree Wars, and especially following directions.[40] SilkWings had no control over the job that was assigned to them as they were picked by the HiveWings because they thought that the SilkWings were "overly sensitive" and "prone to fits of fancy". Common professions included construction worker, web worker, spinners, weavers, servant workers, performers,[41] and other low-ranked jobs like stall owner. It has been mentioned that the most disobedient SilkWings were typically assigned construction work given that it is considered to be very unpleasant.[42] In some Hives, dragonets may be assigned to work as well.[43] SilkWings were not allowed to divorce,[44] and were assigned partners by Wasp and her sisters, rather than having an ability to choose their own.[45] SilkWings were branded on their right[46] palm at a very young age.[47] The SilkWing's initial on their palm is a big letter, while their parent's initials are smaller letters,[47] forming a triangle shape.[46] The SilkWing's initial is at the top, while the parents' are at the right and left bottom corners. SilkWings were also cuffed at a young age. These bronze wrist cuffs had their school and other personal information inscribed on it[48] so they could be identified at checkpoints.[47] All cuffs could inject toxin into the wrist to make dragons lose consciousness in case of betrayal.[49] Bands could be cut off by using flamesilk.[48] After the events of The Flames of Hope, the SilkWings allied with the LeafWings to create the LeafSilk Kingdom. This kingdom is ruled by the SilkWing Assembly, a council of two hundred dragons.[50] Names SilkWings are named after different species of butterfly, such as Blue or Swordtail, or different species of moth, such as Luna or Io. It was hinted that the LeafWings and SilkWings who fled from Pantala were not the first to arrive on Pyrrhia, as half of a SilkWing's wing was displayed in the Weirdling Tower.[event 3] After the events of The Flames of Hope, the SilkWings are the only tribe in both Pyrrhia and Pantala that are not ruled by any queen, but rather a governing body of multiple SilkWings. Due to their vegetarianism, SilkWings have no difficulty accepting that creatures like humans are clever and should not be eaten. They feel similarly about other animals such as zebras, wildebeests, lobsters, and meerkats.[51] In The Hive Queen, Cricket explained that there was an ongoing competition in Jewel Hive where HiveWings attempted to hire the prettiest SilkWing to "sit there and look pretty."[52] Hivewings: HiveWings are one of the three tribes that reside on Pantala. Prior to the ending of The Flames of Hope, HiveWings were the dominating tribe on Pantala; they enslaved the SilkWings and almost exterminated the LeafWings during the time of the Tree Wars. They are currently ruled by Queen Jewel. HiveWings are descended from BeetleWings, with a small amount of NightWing genes from Clearsight, who is the common ancestor of all HiveWings. Hivewings: Description HiveWings have slender, strong, sharp, and muscular bodies. They have four thin, clear, and segmented wings that resemble those of wasps, dragonflies, and other insects. They have a slightly compact face, with a small axe-like ridge on the tip of their snout, and a second, larger curved ridge on the middle of their snout. They have a pair of long, curved, smooth-looking horns. Some HiveWings hatch with stingers in their wrists or tails that have the ability to inject venom. According to A Guide to the Dragons of Pantala, HiveWing scales can be red, yellow and/or orange.[1] They always have at least a few black scales mixed in inherited from their shared ancestor, Clearsight.[2] Some are almost completely black in color, such as Hawker[2] and Bombardier.[3] Some may also have green scales, such as Treehopper.[4] Some HiveWings, such as Katydid, Sandfly, and Scarab, have freckle-like scales, or splashes/splotches of scales like Cricket. HiveWing eye colors include black,[5] orange,[6] brown,[7] red,[8] yellow-gold,[9] green,[10] and amber.[11] Blue once mentioned that HiveWing eyes have a "green-yellow-orange glow".[12] Wasp was noted to have dark green blood,[13] but this may be unique to her as she was imbued with the breath of evil for about 50 years. HiveWing eggs are white.[14] Diet HiveWing drink A pair of HiveWings having a drink in a shop in Jewel Hive from The Hive Queen cover, by Joy Ang HiveWings are omnivorous and eat animals that live on the savanna,[11] such as zebras,[15] wildebeest,[16] gazelle,[17] lions,[5] and antelope.[18] HiveWings also eat confections, like honey drops and nectar,[19][11] as well as vegetables grown in the Hive greenhouses.[11] Sliced avocados were jokingly mentioned by Cricket.[20] Cricket stated that HiveWings do not like to eat most reptiles, such as lizards or snakes, because they believe they may be related to dragons.[21] They also drink tea[20] and coffee.[22] In The Hive Queen, Cricket recalled a drink that tasted like lime,[23] and one that smelled like coconut.[24] Cricket has been mentioned to smell like cinnamon,[25] and to have breath that smelled like apples.[26] Additionally, the Hive on the cover of The Hive Queen depicts a shop selling sharks, implying that sharks or other marine life may also be part of the HiveWing diet. Another shop on the cover appears to be selling mounds of herbs in baskets. Abilities Wasp stinger Ex-Queen Wasp's tail stinger from A Guide to the Dragon World, by Joy Ang According to the Pantalan dragon guide, the HiveWings' powers vary from dragon to dragon, but many do not have any powers.[27] These abilities are genetic and can be passed down.[28] HiveWing powers include sharp stingers extending from their wrists or claws, venom in their teeth, claws or stingers that is usually fatal, though it is not dangerous until the dragon is around two years old,[29] a paralyzing toxin known as nerve poison[30] that can immobilize targets in their claws or tail stinger, spraying boiling acid from a stinger on their tails,[29] and emitting a horrible stench said to smell like dead rotting things pickled in sulfur.[31] Some guards were assumed by Blue to be able to shoot poisonous darts from their tails.[32] Swordtail described the HiveWings' paralyzing toxin as "fire burning every nerve in your body", and "all you want to do is run or fly or even blink, but you cannot move a single muscle until the toxin wears off".[33] A dragon paralyzed by HiveWing venom can be "unparalyzed" when given a strong stimulant.[34] Similar to SilkWings, HiveWings have a precise internal clock which was described to keep their days on schedule and warn them when the rainy season is coming.[35] Wasp could control the mind of any HiveWing whom she had injected with the breath of evil, which was kept in her off-limits, personal greenhouse garden.[36] HiveWings had pure white eyes[37] when under the mind-control and moved in eerie unison.[38] Katydid describes the feeling as having an unstoppable urge to do what the queen commands them to do, similar to being hypnotized.[39] Society Pre-Tree Wars When the HiveWings first became their own tribe, they coexisted peacefully with the other Pantalan tribes.[40] Before the Tree Wars, HiveWings lived in the forests of Pantala with a preference for cliffs and caves.[11] It was originally believed that there was a list of HiveWings who inherited the throne in the Book of Clearsight,[41] but this was a lie that only the queen knew about. In actuality, HiveWing queens would choose their successor.[42] Even before the Tree Wars, HiveWing books left out the fact that the HiveWing tribe was created from Clearsight having dragonets with several BeetleWings and that HiveWings and SilkWings are related. The two tribes used to be able to intermingle until Scarab's great-great-grandmother ordered for it to stop. Scarab also noted that her great-great-grandmother was likely the queen who removed the information about Clearsight marrying BeetleWings from HiveWing history books.[43] The HiveWing queen would meet with the SilkWing and LeafWing queen every few moons to smooth out disputes.[44] Post-Tree Wars HiveWings live in cities known as Hives that were formerly ruled by Queen Wasp and her female relatives. They were first-class citizens in their society, above the SilkWings. Wasp's relatives ruled the other Hives around the continent and held the title of lady rather than princess. The queen outranked the ladies, but according to Morpho, the queen did not mind-control them to give them the illusion of control.[45] HiveWing schools required dragonets to specialize in a subject at a young age. They would get a basic education at academies before continuing their specialized education at one of the nine Hive universities. For most dragonets, their career path was guided by their parents.[46] Each Hive had a university that specialized in a different career set.[47] It was difficult for HiveWings to get a divorce because they needed permission from the queen in order to do so.[48] If the queen allowed a HiveWing couple to get divorced, they had to go through a whole separation request process that was difficult.[48] It was also considered strongly forbidden for a HiveWing and a SilkWing to be together.[4] HiveWings utilized SilkWings as servants, exploiting them for personal benefits in various roles such as cooks, butlers, and secretaries. Servants followed their mistress.[49] HiveWings from Jewel Hive owned SilkWing servants as an accessory, often striving to make them look more extravagant than the others. They often made them stand in windows just to look pretty or parade them around.[50] Names HiveWings are named after a variety of insects, such as different species of bees, wasps, ants, beetles, weevils, crickets, and mantids. They may also be named after annelids, such as Earthworm, or after insect larvae, such as Bloodworm. HiveWings may also be named after arachnid species, in the case of Vinegaroon. They are the only living tribe that was mentioned in the Legend of the Hive, the other tribe being the now-extinct BeetleWings. Before the events of the Tree Wars, the LeafWings were ruled by Queen Sequoia. In The Lost Continent, many SilkWings and HiveWings believed the LeafWings had been exterminated during the Tree Wars, although a few believed that they were still alive. Many of the Hives were filled with propaganda posters depicting LeafWings as vicious, cruel, and terrifying. Ex-Queen Wasp antagonized them so much that most of the trees, believed to be symbolic of the LeafWings, were destroyed after the Tree Wars, and trees were banned by HiveWing law from being included in artwork. This is most likely because Wasp believed the trees gave power to the LeafWings. In The Hive Queen, Sundew stated that the PoisonWings were planning to restart the Tree Wars, and that the surviving LeafWings lived in the Poison Jungle. They began their mission by burning Bloodworm Hive. In The Poison Jungle and The Dangerous Gift, Hazel temporarily served as Queen of the LeafWings while Sequoia was under the control of the othermind Description LeafWings can be various shades of green and brown, even to the point of being nearly black in color.[1] They can also sometimes have golden[2] or pinkish red streaks over their bodies and wings.[3] They have green[4] or brown[5] eyes and webbed spines along their neck and back, similar to that of a SeaWing. The webbing along their back splits into individual pieces near the base of the tail, which are shaped like leaves. Their snout is slightly curved, with a raised ridge on the end. LeafWings have a flat plated tail, ending in a leaf-shaped oval at the tip. Their wings are leaf-like, playing directly into their namesake. They are also slightly transparent, with veins in the webbing and rounded edges. Their horns appear to be skinny, curved, and flat-ended, and the scales above their eyes continue over the top of their horns, giving it a partially plated look. Their scales are uneven and vaguely resemble chloroplasts and plant cells. They have a plated underbelly and a slender body shape. Their legs seem to be slightly short and thin. The PoisonWings have been seen carrying leaf or grass pouches containing deadly plants and insects.[6] Diet LeafWings are somewhat autotrophic, being able to absorb energy from the sun that allows them to eat infrequently.[event 1] They are omnivores and consume animals in the Poison Jungle, such as panthers,[7] snails, capybaras,[8] frogs, insects, and wild pigs.[9] LeafWings also consume taro, sugared grasshoppers, and chocolate, usually as a snack or treat.[10][11] LeafWings sometimes cook their food for occasions such as all-tribe feasts.[12] LeafWings are also noted to eat kambu, potatoes,[13] and fruits such as mangos,[8] bananas, papayas, avocados, and dragonberries.[13] Abilities LeafWings can absorb energy from sunlight, similar to RainWings, and are accomplished gardeners.[14] They may possess leafspeak, which allows dragons to talk to plants. Leafspeakers may convince already existing plants or seeds to grow at an accelerated rate,[15] grow in a certain way,[16] or convince the plant to attack a specific target (or not to attack), though they cannot produce them from nothing.[17] As leafspeak is genetic, selective breeding may be employed to achieve stronger leafspeak abilities; two leafspeakers may produce a dragonet with stronger leafspeak than either of them.[18] Most LeafWings appear to have exceptional knowledge over plants and insects, using them as weapons against other dragons.[19] Some LeafWings can also swim.[20] Society Pre-Tree Wars Before the Tree Wars, the LeafWings lived everywhere on Pantala where there were trees.[9] They had many libraries[21] and it was suggested that LeafWing dragonets were educated at academies.[22] The LeafWings celebrated an event known as the New Year of the Trees which they continued to celebrate during and just after the Tree Wars.[23] It is unknown if this celebration still occurs. The LeafWing queen would meet with the SilkWing and HiveWing queen every few moons to smooth out disputes.[24] Post-Tree Wars After the events of the Tree Wars, the tribe split into two groups; half of them staying loyal to Queen Sequoia and wanting to lay low and isolate themselves until Wasp's death, and the other half united under Linden and swore revenge against the HiveWings for destroying their trees.[25] Each group claims to be the, "real LeafWings,"[26] calling the others a separate tribe. However, Luna considers the LeafWings as a whole to be the fiercest tribe on Pantala.[27] The violent LeafWings were dubbed "PoisonWings" by the other group for being needlessly violent and naming their dragonets after dangerous plants.[25] Commander Belladonna was the former ruler of the PoisonWings, though she was formerly controlled by the othermind. She often assigned important missions, including one that ultimately led to the Burning of Bloodworm Hive. She planned for Sundew to marry Mandrake in order to breed more leafspeak dragonets so that they could become part of the PoisonWing community and help fight in the war. PoisonWing dragonets were not taught about the "SapWings" until they turned four.[28] Dragonets lived with their family in nests until they turn five, when they would leave to build their own.[29] The other group of LeafWings were called "SapWings" due to their need to seek for balance in unity and understanding instead of violence. Queen Sequoia was their former leader. Though the peaceful SapWings were often called spineless and brainless by the PoisonWings, they are shown to be more open-minded than the militaristic PoisonWings and less strict, unlike their rival. Unlike the PoisonWings, they learned about the other half of the tribe in school.[25] The two factions bear animosity against each other for their methods and ideas, but Sequoia and Commander Belladonna did occasionally hold meetings in secret.[30] LeafWings were also told that SilkWings were not allowed to go to school.[31] After Wasp was defeated and replaced by Jewel as queen of the HiveWings, most of the LeafWings went to live in the LeafSilk Kingdom.[32] Literature is important to the LeafWings, especially after the Tree Wars. It was believed by the HiveWings and some SilkWings that the LeafWings could not read.[21] They use jungle ingredients for bookbinding, including sap for glue, tree fiber for threads, and bark with dye made from flowers for book covers.[33] They also use firefly lamps as a source of light.[34] Names LeafWings were named after different types of trees that are found in forests and woods before the Tree Wars. After the Tree Wars, the LeafWings split into the PoisonWings and SapWings. The factions have a very stark difference in their naming systems. PoisonWings are named after poisonous plants; although some are named after carnivorous plants, or plants poisonous to smaller animals, such as Sundew, Nettle, Cobra Lily, and Mandrake. SapWings are named after trees, such as Willow, Sequoia, and Hawthorn.[25] RainWings, also known as rainforest dragons to humans, are a Pyrrhian dragon tribe that reside in the Rainforest Kingdom, alongside the NightWings. RainWings are usually pacifists and were not involved in the War of SandWing Succession. They are currently ruled by Queen Glory. RainWings are based on chameleons.[event 1] They are long and graceful, with ruffs behind their ears, curved horns, and prehensile tails that are used primarily for climbing, swinging in trees, and hanging off branches in the rainforest they inhabit, like birds of paradise. When afraid, insulted, or angry, RainWings flare their ruffs as a sign of aggression or hostility.[1] RainWings have small, round scales that can change color. Most RainWings prefer vivid, bright colors; however, if they wish, they can camouflage to look like they have disappeared. They can control the color of their scales, though they often have a hard time stopping strong emotions from showing through them. Most RainWings have a 'default' color scheme that they set their scales to when they are not showing emotions. RainWing eyes can change color, and they may not be able to camouflage when they are afraid or in pain.[citation needed] RainWings also cannot camouflage if someone who does not know how to camouflage is mind-controlling them (via the othermind).[2] RainWings are able to blend into their surroundings at will otherwise. Although their eyes shift colors like their scales, RainWings primarily have green, yellow, brown, or blue eyes.[3] RainWings are able to mimic the realistic appearance of other tribes with their scales.[4] RainWing dragonets develop their color-shifting scales while they are still in their eggs, which are pale, smooth, and white.[5] RainWings have sun-time to make their scales beautiful and improve their mood. Abilities RainWings have long, prehensile tails that are great for swinging through the rainforest, as well as long fangs and color-changing scales. Some RainWings are able to mimic certain bird calls.[49] They are capable of absorbing sunlight, which gives them energy and causes their scales to become brighter. They have a dedicated time to sleep in the sun, known as "suntime", when the sun is at its highest, and RainWings who do not sleep in the sun may have duller or unchangeable scales.[50][51] Sunlight is also vital to the development of other RainWing abilities, such as venom, and to their good mood.[52][21] However, if a RainWing has a certain snout deformity that causes them to be unable to sleep for long periods of time, like Chameleon's, they cannot change color.[ RainWing scales change color by bending light.[event 2] When at ease, RainWing scales may reflect their emotions. They can also manipulate their scales to be any color they wish,[53] though strong emotions may break through a chosen scale color.[50] RainWings can also use their scales for camouflage, reflecting their surroundings and making them effectively invisible to most dragons. Other RainWings may be able to spot a disguised dragon. This is a skill they develop at a young age during games of hide-and-seek.[54] RainWings can change the color of their eyes and are able to manipulate a fine level of detail onto their scales.[event 3][ RainWings who are born blind always show their emotions on their scales and cannot manually change them. When relaxed, their scales will automatically camouflage to their surroundings,[56] and that ability can be improved with practice.[ RainWings have long front fangs which extend up high towards the target when ready to spit the venom and a jaw that can unhinge to shoot corrosive venom. This venom only affects organic material, such as animals and plants. Inorganic materials, such as rock and metal, are not affected.[58] It can be deadly if it reaches a dragon's bloodstream or eyes.[58] If a dragon survives a venom attack, it will leave warped, scarred scales or skin.[59] RainWing venom is neutralized by contact with the venom of a blood relative.[60] Dragonet venom is shown to be weaker than adult venom,[61] and usually older dragons will be able to shoot venom further. RainWing venom is black and will dry into glossy droplets (reminiscent of obsidian) after some time exposed to air.[62] RainWings have blowguns with sleeping darts, coated in tree-frog poison.[79] These darts are used as a form of protection, to knock out strange dragons wandering into the forest, and for games as well.[79][80] RainWings use flowers for decoration the way the other tribes used jewels and precious stones.[81] RainWings keep sloths as pets, often when a sloth chooses a dragon by climbing on them during suntime.[44] A dragon may own multiple sloths.[82] RainWings perform a venom test before having eggs, ensuring that they are not blood relatives.[83] This prevents inbreeding in the tribe, as formal families do not exist.[84] RainWings engage in communal raising of dragonets, with everyone pitching in to help.[60] RainWing dragonets are trained to aim their venom, glide through trees without getting snagged by the foliage, and gather fruit.[85][60][30] They are not taught to read or write, but some may train as medics, as RainWings have multiple healers in their village. These healers keep their scales calming shades of blue and white.[86] An adult RainWing with no role or assignment will always get the last choice for sun-time spots and only leftovers for food.[87] RainWings have an oral storytelling tradition which was the primary way that stories are told without scrolls. They would gather before or after suntime to share stories that ranged from fragments of history or myths to magical adventures, proving their imagination powerful.[88] Before Queen Glory's reign, they would not count or track their eggs, only stopping by occasionally to check for newly hatched dragonets.[89] Glory aspired to change this when she became queen so that no more eggs would ever go lost again.[90] They have dragons keeping watch in the rainforest for danger, both RainWings and NightWings.[91][92] They are also beginning to read and write. They are attempting to grow a moon globe tree (from the Ice Kingdom) for light.[93] Dragonets are raised in a wingery and learn skills such as tree gliding, venom targeting, and camouflage. Dragons less than a year old could mimic almost the exact shade of a dragon.[94] They also constantly play games such as hide and seek, which is a favorite.[54] In the time of Darkstalker, RainWings were a more threatening tribe.[96][97] They had merchants selling both fruits and potions to the other tribes.[98][99] They could also read and write at some point before the events of the series.[100] They once had libraries[88] and an assassin training program. During this time, they had skirmishes and wars with the MudWings and SkyWings over territory. RainWing spies resided outside of the rainforest in order to gather information on the weaknesses of other tribes.[101] Under the reign of Queen Jacaranda, the RainWings began transitioning over to a peaceful lifestyle, building hammocks and taming sloths.[48] Despite this, the RainWings still challenged and killed each other over the throne, and it was necessary for them to defend the rainforest from other tribes.[75] RainWings may be named after plants and animals found in the rainforest (such as Kinkajou, Tamarin, Jambu, and Orchid), fruits (such as Mango, Pineapple, and Coconut), trees (such as Mangrove), and positive adjectives (such as Exquisite, Handsome, Magnificent and Dazzling).
