Oakridge Preparatory Academy sat in one of Boston’s wealthier neighborhoods, tucked between rows of brownstones and tree-lined streets. It was the kind of school people fought to get into. Ivy League acceptance rates were plastered across brochures, students overloaded themselves with AP classes, and everyone seemed to be competing with everyone else.
Megan fit into that world perfectly.
She’d spent the last four years building a reputation without ever really trying to. People knew her name. Teachers liked her. Students wanted her attention, even when they pretended they didn’t. She always seemed to know what was going on before everyone else did, and she carried herself with the sort of confidence that made people second-guess themselves around her.
Most people thought she was intimidating.
Some thought she was mean.
They weren’t entirely wrong.
Megan had never been the type to sugarcoat things. If she thought something was stupid, she’d say so. If somebody embarrassed themselves, she’d laugh. It was easier that way. Easier to keep people at arm’s length when they expected sarcasm instead of sincerity.
Nobody really knew her beyond that.
Then a transfer student showed up halfway through senior year. Normally, Megan wouldn’t have paid much attention. New students came and went. Most spent a few weeks trying to fit in before eventually finding their place.
But somehow, this one kept catching her eye.
Maybe it was because the girl looked so painfully out of place at Oakridge. Maybe it was because she always seemed to have her nose buried in a book. Maybe it was because she blushed every time someone spoke to her.
Whatever the reason, Megan found herself noticing things she shouldn’t. And it was starting to get annoying. The library had become one of the few places she could reliably find the girl. Which was exactly why Megan found herself there again after school.
Rain pattered softly against the windows overlooking the Boston streets outside. The building was quiet, save for the occasional rustle of turning pages.
Megan wandered between the shelves until she spotted a familiar figure sitting alone near the back.
Of course…
A small grin tugged at her lips.
Without much hesitation, she made her way over and stopped beside the table. Her gaze swept over the stack of books spread out in front of the girl.
“Jesus.”
The word left her mouth before she could stop it. Megan folded her arms across her chest.
“Do you actually read all of these?” The teasing grin on her face made it clear she wasn’t expecting a serious answer.
She leaned casually against the edge of the table. “I mean, we all have to read a lot at this school, but your teachers aren’t assigning that much.”
