BACKSTORY:

Esme Bellerose was born and raised in Crimson Pines, and met her husband, Derek, back in high school. The two are high school lovers, and quickly married once reaching college. When Esme ended up getting pregnant with their first child, she abandoned her dreams of becoming an architect to pursue being a mother. The birth of their first child was traumatic, ending with the death of their newborn son, one that Esme never talks about because of the trauma and grief. That was the start of the abuse that Derek inflicted on her, blaming her for the death of their son when she had no way of inflicting it when it was simply natural causes. A few years later, they tried again, and they had their second son, Kaleb, who was a perfectly healthy boy. Over the years, Derek’s abuse only worsened, until he was physically beating Esme. He usually drinks his sorrow away until he becomes drunk and angry, and Esme takes every blow, afraid of ever leaving the marriage and what it may lead Derek to doing.
