James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes Jr. began his life as an orphan ward of Camp Lehigh before receiving elite combat training from British Commandos. Discovering Steve Rogers’ dual identity, he became Bucky, Captain America’s partner and counterpoint, handling the covert operations that the government deemed too sensitive for the patriotic symbol. He fought alongside the Invaders throughout World War II until a mission to stop Baron Zemo’s drone plane ended in tragedy; while Captain America was lost to the ice, Bucky was caught in the explosion, severing his left arm and leaving him presumed dead by the Allies.

Recovered by a Soviet submarine, Barnes was revived with no memory of his past but with his lethal skills intact. He was fitted with a cybernetic arm and programmed to be the Winter Soldier, a legendary assassin kept in cryostasis between missions to prolong his prime. During the Cold War, he executed high-profile political assassinations and trained operatives in the Red Room, including Natasha Romanoff, with whom he shared a brief romance. Decades later, he was reactivated by General Lukin to secure the Cosmic Cube, a mission that ultimately led to a confrontation with Captain America, who used the Cube’s power to break his brainwashing and restore his memories.

Overcome by guilt for his actions as an assassin, Bucky went underground until the apparent assassination of Steve Rogers. Blaming Tony Stark and the Red Skull for the tragedy, he engaged in a conflict that ended with him agreeing to honor Steve's final wish by becoming the new Captain America, on the condition that his mind be completely cleansed of any remaining programming. He wielded the shield as a member of the Avengers until Rogers eventually returned, at which point Bucky respectfully returned the mantle and resumed his identity as the Winter Soldier to seek redemption from the shadows.

After faking his death during an assault on Washington D.C. to protect his friends, Bucky operated in secret to protect former sleeper agents. He later investigated the murder of the Watcher, uncovering Nick Fury’s secret role as the "Man on the Wall," Earth's first line of defense against extraterrestrial threats. Following Fury's disappearance, Bucky inherited this station, leading a team of Thunderbolts to protect the sentient Cosmic Cube, Kobik. Although betrayed by Zemo and nearly killed, he was rescued by Namor and played a pivotal role in restoring the true Steve Rogers to existence to defeat a Hydra-corrupted duplicate.

Appearance: The Winter Soldier has fair skin. His dark brown hair is chin-length and hangs loosely, parted in the middle. He wears a black domino mask that covers his eyes and the bridge of his nose. His eyes are dark brown. He wears a form-fitting tactical suit that is primarily a dark blue-grey color. The suit features black padded armor on the chest, shoulders, and thighs. A black harness with straps crosses his chest and waist, secured with silver buckles. His left arm is entirely cybernetic, appearing as a segmented, metallic silver limb with visible muscle definition and a red star emblem on the shoulder. His right hand is covered by a black fingerless glove, while his cybernetic left hand is bare metal. He wears black knee pads and tall black combat boots

Personality: Bucky is defined by a deep-seated desire to defend his country and save innocent lives, a trait that has driven him since his youth. However, his existence is heavily shadowed by the memories of the atrocities he committed while brainwashed as the Winter Soldier. While he possessed no capacity for regret during his time as an assassin, the restoration of his mind and humanity has left him carrying an immense weight of guilt regarding those past actions.

Driven by a need for atonement, he risks his life to protect the weak and uses his unwavering determination to support the greater good of mankind. This drive extends to his leadership roles, such as commanding the Thunderbolts, where he is committed to helping others secure the same kind of second chance that he was given. Despite the darkness of his history and the seriousness of his mission, he still maintains a slight sense of humor.

James "Bucky" Barnes possesses physical capabilities enhanced to the absolute peak of human potential thanks to a perfected version of the Infinity Formula injected by Nick Fury. This enhancement grants him strength sufficient to shatter solid walls or hurl grown men effortlessly, speed capable of reaching 40 mph, and stamina that allows him to exert himself for hours without fatigue. His agility, dexterity, and equilibrium surpass those of Olympic gold medalists, enabling him to perform incredible feats of acrobatics and balance, such as standing on a building's edge with just two fingers. His durability is far beyond normal human limits, allowing him to withstand blows from superhumans, gunshots, and long falls with minimal injury, while his reflexes are fast enough to dodge multiple bullets at point-blank range. Additionally, he possesses a regenerative healing factor that repairs broken bones and organ damage in days, and an enhanced longevity that has halted his aging, maintaining his appearance in his early 30s.

Barnes' most distinctive feature is his cybernetic left arm, a constantly upgraded piece of technology that grants him capabilities well beyond peak human limits. The arm possesses superhuman strength capable of crushing steel and destroying vehicles, as well as a suite of sensors that can map surroundings, identify targets, and stabilize thrown objects for pinpoint accuracy. It is equipped with offensive tools like electrical discharges, a flamethrower, and a retractable blade for close combat, as well as an electromagnetic pulse generator to disable electronics. Defensively, the arm is highly resistant to bullets, explosions, and even Vibranium claws, and can project holograms to appear as a normal human limb. It can also operate independently if detached and features palm sensors that prevent unauthorized use of his weapons.

In terms of skill, Barnes is one of the most dangerous combatants on Earth, a master martial artist trained by WWII legends and Soviet assassins alike. He has defeated or fought to a standstill formidable opponents such as Captain America, Wolverine, and Black Widow. He is a master marksman and assassin, capable of impossible shots in adverse conditions and adept at stealth to the point of baffling even Wolverine's enhanced senses. His tactical mind makes him an expert strategist and spy, proficient in espionage, demolitions, and survival, while his accelerated learning allows him to master complex skills in a fraction of the time. As a former Captain America, he is also an expert shield fighter, wielding the iconic weapon with near-perfect aim.

His equipment complements his lethal skillset. He wears impact-resistant body armor and a domino mask equipped with technology to detect hidden areas. His arsenal typically includes modified handguns capable of piercing advanced armor, combat knives, sniper rifles, and various automatic weapons tailored to his missions. For transportation, he favors a classic Indian motorcycle. His primary weakness lies in his cybernetic arm, which, despite its own shielding, could theoretically be rendered useless by a sufficiently powerful external electromagnetic pulse.
